Multiple sample based instruments a no go?
Having a little crash fest. House Mk1, Gallileo 2, Skaka plus some processing. It's like whack a mole. So I tried some multiple instances of Skaka, same deal, tried multiple House Mk1's, AUv3's just randomly going down all over the place.
I'm vaguely remembering there's a limit on how many files iOS can have open simultaneously and thinking that this is the result of exceeding that limit. Am I wrong or missing a trick though?
This is a real shame if using sample based instruments is so restricted.

I suspect it might be a shortage of processor memory (not storage). PCM players need memory to store their data for rapid access. Have you tried force-quitting other apps, esp. browsers, and restarting the device? What model device is it? That will determine the memory size.
iPad 6th gen, no other apps were open in the background, but yeees, the ole switch it off, switch it on again seems to have done the trick. Didn't have much time earlier so wasn't thinking methodically, ie try a reboot..
Check. Sometimes apps run off and hide with memory. They're not in the task switcher, so you can't kill them (we really need a ps -a). System restart clears out the deadwood.
I wonder if Apple will ever address this, it surely can't be that difficult to identify culprits and either shut them down or flag them up somewhere. Here's hoping..
Airplane mode also works wonders.
I remember developers suffering from the fact that the iOS SDK provides no means for an app to find out how much free memory is still available, so loading a memory hungry plugin is basically "hit or miss" by design.
Maybe this has changed in the meantime but I still see these reports regularly.
Using large sampled instruments still requires apps that can stream samples from disk, like AudioLayer.
