Ipad's touch screen unresponsive when charging
My touch screen is very unresponsive as soon as my iPad Air2 is connected to a power supply (wall or laptop). I tried different cables and cleaned my screen but it didn't help.
Tonight while playing Midi from the iPad into Ableton (through MIDI IDAM) I noticed that there's no problem when the Macbook isn't plugged to the wall. As soon as I plug in the laptop's charger, I get some drop-out notes and the screen gets briefly unresponsive once in a while. Same problem when I charge the device with lightning plug to the wall.
It's been bugging me for a while.
I'm still on IOS 12.1.
Any idea?

I had problems like that once when iOS kept downloading the next iOS update whenever I plugged in my iPad. I was low on space and the download was not only burdening the device but it was also causing havoc due to the free space being too low.
I’m not saying that’s your issue, just passing along my experience. You can try going to airplane mode to easily see if that helps anything.
Too bad you didn’t get up to iOS 13 before it was too late. Lots of issues music related issues were eventually fixed in 13. Now you’re stuck until the bugs are worked out of 14.
Exactly the same problem on an Air2 and Air3, only when connected to power. No idea why.

Try with your feet lifted off the ground.
It’s a known problem with the air 2 (not sure for the other models.) Some power supplies seem to lessen the problem for some users. (In my case the best solution has been battery banks.)
My touch screen has become unresponsive at certain times, almost certainly around the time iOS 14 came out, though I can't necessarily pin the blame on it. It's a 10.5 Pro from 2017, so it's getting a little old. It's almost like it's registering a touch when I'm not making one, thus blocking me from actually performing an action. It's not big hands either, as this happens even when I'm holding the iPad with one hand beneath it.
Same problem here with two 2nd generation Pro 12.9. The only solution for me is, as @ohwell said, a power bank!
Definitely a problem on my Air2. PITA
Some
That indeed sounds like a noisy power supply, I had exactly the same issue when I used a cheap "sine-wave equivalent" UPS together with a cheap charger (no / cheap filtering).
Is any of the involved power supplies / chargers non-Apple, and are you using a UPS (battery backup)?
This happens to me, but also when not on power supply and it's getting worse lately. First I suspected the protective glass so I removed it completely. For some time I thought that was the root cause but now I am experiencing this issue very often even without protective glass. Usually I try to touch different parts of the screen (usually near the borders) and then it usually fixes. But it's really annoying, I was just recently thinking about sending it for warranty claim.
The note about downloading update in the background is interesting. Maybe I'll just go with iPadOS 14, hopefully it's stable now. This kind of issues is super hard to pin down as they only occur randomly and randomly disappear.
Unfortunately, this is not Apple quality as I remember it years ago
Have the same problem with a 10.5 pro. I had the battery replaced after 2 years so I got a new device a few months ago. I didn’t notice any responsiveness problems with the first unit I had.
It happens after a while (after it gets to 30% from 15% for example)charging it with a 30w charger. Some touch inputs are simply ignored.
I have to reboot to regain normal reactivity. I suspect heat or maybe static (touching the body seems to change something briefly) as a source, but at the same time why does restarting make things better? Weird, but I can live with it.
Edit : I don’t think this occurs with the standard 12w charger.
In conclusion it could be related to the device itself or the charger or maybe to the OS (I’m still on 13.7), who knows....
