Oh noes- will all the SynthStation25 owners demand a refund, as in the QNeo kerfluffle??
If had any doubt, this proves that AB improves the sales of the compatible apps.
Holy smokes! Very surprising. It's got some great samples. One of my earliest apps. Worth the 3 quid as a sketching tool for sure. Thanks for posting @fjcblanco
This is awesome for me. I always wanted virtual midi and background audio on this one. "Improved sound quality" now that's interesting.
If you wonder what this app is about, it's essentially Korg Gadget's Great Grandpa, and Cassini's Grandma.
If Argon makes it through the same update pipe, whoa that would be extraordinary.
Thanks for the post @fjblanco. This was deleted long ago but now worthy of another look I reckon. "Improved sound quality" is intriguing, although I can't remember what it sounded like originally.
@AQ808 - Ha, I was just searching this forum looking for more information on this app and read in the Gadget thread where you said:
"PCM synths can very often have a metallic, whistling effect, especially with multiple PCM sounds layered together at the same time. I learned that lesson from the Xenon app"
Is this worth getting if you have Gadget?
I was thinking it might be time for @thesoundtestroom treatment on this one. What do ya reckon Doug?
Well, it really depends. I've had it for a few years now, and rarely use it because to my ear it is hard to get sounds out of it as big as you get out of the top of the line synths.
When I was a teen, my brother had one of those Casio synths you'd get from Sam's Club, and I played it as much as he did. The preset sounds from Xenon and Argon are very similar to that type of very thin synth preset kind of sound.
That said, I have some slight nostalgia for that type of sound. If you do, and take it for what it is, you'll likely enjoy it.
But it definitely isn't the booming badass Korg Gadget is. What makes it like Gadget is a sequential pattern based sequencer, but I believe it is limited to 16th notes and can't do triplets. There is also a limit of 4 tones at a time with two of the included synths, but of course it shares that with Animoog, so it is workable.
The nice thing it has which I don't believe Gadget has is a system for note ties between patterns.
If you like something like Rebirth or Rhythm Studio, but wished for thin old Casio sounds and a much easier interface, this would be what you're looking for. It has that primitive edge to it.
It is truly primitive compared to Gadget, hands down, and if you rarely find value looking back to thin sounds, you won't enjoy this.
To me they have a certain charm, which I also find in the Marseille synth within Gadget, however the sound out of Marseille is way more deep.
If you have Cassini, that's to me a very beefy Casio sound. This is ultra-thin in comparison.
Wow, that might qualify as a review!

Yes, and thank you for taking the time to write it.
You're welcome, I'm riding out a cold/flu thing and am happy that I had the time to properly revisit this app.
I would also be interested in Doug's take on it of course.
Akai has been unresponsive about updating the SS25 software SDK to support the current hardware architectures. I am about to drop support for it in ThumbJam so I can optimize my builds for devices made in the last 2 years.
It's also lowered to a $2.99 sale for a limited time.
The price is right, and so is the new compatability. But it looks kind of like Caustic with less stuff.
It's funny - I'll buy a dozen dedicated synth apps to use in AB, but "studio" apps that try to be all things at once feel redundant with Gadget or Caustic.
Also, a bit concerned at how old the reviews are, and people said it was lagging on an iPad2 back in 2010/11!

After only messing around with it for 10 min I'm with @AQ808 on this one. The synths have have a "thin" sound to them. If that's good or bad is totally up to your personal taste/needs. Only real negative thing I have to say is that preset handling needs work (arrow buttons, or a preview sound in the preset lists). Other then that I'm sure this will see some use here!
The PCM synth uses a GM sound bank. I wonder if that's simply a soundfont you can perhaps change to a higher quality font with iFunbox or something, to spice it all up a bit.
Anyway, 3 bucks and it's now AB compat, so it's possible to run it through anything to mess with the sounds.
I'd wished Argon would be the first be AB compat tho, love that little synth. Please IceWorks, give Argon some AB2 love!
I had been sort of looking for this one to get AB, but you guys have put me off it. Another one comes to mind: ARGON Synth... anyone have any experience?
Argon is the iPhone version of Xenon but never had cause to use it
Naw, argon is just one synth, not a groovebox like Xenon. Argon got the arp thing goin, different interface, different sounds etc..
Exactly. Xenon is the iPhone version of Xenon.
Argon has not had an ipad specific version yet, but of course runs on the ipad in up-scaled mode.
Argon also has a cool preset bank by sinevibes. Argon is a monophonic VA synth, whereas Xenon has three synths and a PCM drum machine.

Perhaps "baby brother" may have been a better way of describing the relationship?
Update is in US store now. Lol I posted this in wrong thread. This was supposed to be in AB 2.01 update thread.
I still love argon as well. +1 for a bus ride.
brought up an old xenon drum jam and gave it some auria and ab2 attention. fabfilter plugins aufx space and eq apps involved
