My iPad has died
I've been running 14.0 since release, without too many problems, but then the WiFi started playing up, it would connect and disconnect infinitely. So I tried to update the OS yesterday and it just kept popping up a message saying "Unable to check for updates" even though the red dot was there. Then today I noticed that the photos widget on my home screen had stopped working, and Photos.app wouldn't launch, so I checked in the settings where it said I have 9,223,372,036,854,775,807 photos on it. One would have thought the -9,223,372,036,854,775,800 videos on there would make up for it. Turned iCloud Photos off and on again, signed out of iCloud completely and in again, nothing made a difference. So then I reset all settings, and now it's not booting - just stuck at a screen with a white apple logo on it.
Any of this sound familiar to anyone? And if so, anyone know the way out of it?
Alternatively, I'm eventually going to need to upgrade this thing anyway, any advice on the new 11" or 12.9" iPads?

Can you hook it up to your computer to restore device in iTunes ?
I'm not sure, backups are in iCloud, so I think if I do that I have to do a full reset and restore from iCloud in the hope that it has been backing up recently.
I would probably restore it on your computer and restore from a backup. If you go to iCloud settings and Manage Storage you can check if your backup was recent. If the problem comes back after that, you probably want to call Apple. That is pretty crazy.
Some good tips here:

I've been in the same situation and had to restore in DFU mode. Hopefully you've got a recent backup - should be OK if it's on icloud but depends on whether there was enough space in your account...Good luck...!
Good now finally time for Lego
Thanks, in the process of trying to update the OS in DFU mode connected to my Mac at the moment. There was definitely enough space in my iCloud, I'm just hoping that the backups don't have the corruption in them too.
I've also ordered an 11" pro, because it was about time anyway. So any tips on how to connect headphones on the new one would also be much appreciated.
iOS 14 never ceases to amaze us wih new surprises.
Thanks!
I think I've managed to bring it back to life with an OS update in DFU mode connected to the Mac. Thanks everyone.
Cool beans...👍
I spoke too soon. It runs for ten minutes and then starts reinstalling itself and gets stuck. Going to have to do a full wipe I think and hope the backups are there.
Be aware that if you are restoring from an iCloud backup: some apps’ data doesn’t get backed up to iCloud.
It’s back, and so far so good. But I’ve said that before.
Ha, I reckon only 400 of those are impulse buys after visiting this place.
Yep, they replaced my busted 1st Gen Pro out of warranty free of charge.
Pay through the nose for the stuff but can't fault that ...
Got a new one coming tomorrow actually, 2020 Pro.
Current Pro's battery is shot and any excuse for a sneaky upgrade ...
Good to hear the OP's got sorted.
Sadly it’s not sorted. Fairly convinced now this is a hardware problem, if I try watching something streaming the app crashes after about 20 minutes and the Bluetooth and WiFi keep cutting out. And the content of all the widgets disappears. Feels like a RAM problem.
New 2020 11” Pro coming in a couple of weeks so music will have to wait until then.
