Nanostudio 2 vs Zenbeats?
I have a very cursory knowledge of both but now wanna jump into one of them in a deeper level. Which one should I choose ?
Zenbeats: More frequent updates, Sampleverse isn’t t really a sampler .. Has audio recording ...Zencore sounds built right in..
Nanostudio 2- Obsidian is great but no audio as of yet and in 5 years will this app be much further along?
Comments
What about Cubasis 3?
It's hard to answer that when you haven't listed your priorities. But I would say of the short number of things you listed the "Sampleverse isn't really a sampler" downside is the easiest to overcome. There are plenty of options for samplers.
No audio tracks is a much harder thing to overcome. Yes, there are ways to work with audio in NS2, but none are very satisfactory in my opinion.
There is NO data on when audio tracks will come for NS2, and no development timeline. I think it's pretty safe to say though, that in five years NS2 will not be much further along. Will it have audio tracks by then? I think so. Will it have many major new features ... highly unlikely.
My suggestion: Evaluate only based on where the two apps are today and do not go with either if you can't be happy with the decision.
Thanks @wim : Thing is though, Stagelight has a history of steady improvements and Zenbeats has a 2.0 already . So I have to take that into consideration
I think you will find more value in digging into Zenbeats. It’s not the most intuitive interface around but once you learn your way around some of its quirky menus and features, it is really very useable and even enjoyable. They offer great training resources to get you started, too. I’ve been having very good luck with creating good results from it. I’m heavily invested in Endlesss as a creative platform and ZB is the best counterpart I’ve found to keep things in iOS. However, I love that I can easily move projects between iPad and my PC desktop, too. When working with a defined set of audio loops, I find it faster to add and arrange them on PC and then transfer it over to my iPad to make use of my many great apps. A word of caution, though: Learn to be selective and sparing with adding non-ZB plugins to tracks and use the sends rather than adding too many distributed instances as you can definitely encounter performance issues. I like the grid/timeline views which recall Ableton-like workflow. The new ZC-1 synth is kinda basic but very usable with lots of good foundational sounds. Disappointing that you cannot do much to edit audio loops other than pitch, but automation is nice (cannot remember if you have to draw it in). I get some artifacts when changing loop start points but they are aware and working on that. It is actively developed and support is helpful so I have faith it will continue to improve.
I have NS2 and Obsidian is great but overall it’s a well-designed MIDI arranger but no audio is a deal-breaker for my workflow.
@oddSTAR : Thank for that : Hopefuult Zenbeats will work out those performance issues you’re talking about .Could it be you’re using an older iPad with a CPU that can’t handle the additional plug ins? As for audio in NS 2 I have to believe it’s coming, meanwhile it seems people are getting great results using NS2 in conjunction with 4pockets audio recorder . Great analysis of Zen Beats though.. ..Again, thanks
4Pockets Multitrack Recorder does work pretty well with NS2, but with some limitations.
i struggle choosing between these two as well.
zenbeats has 4 pros that are pretty big imo..
1. audio tracks
2. clips
3. records midi fx without 3rd party app
4. you can access the on screen keyboard from the effects screen, makes adjusting the effect much smoother than jumping back and forth
other than that, they are quite similar. ns2 has a better synth bundled with it imo but i don’t really find myself using it, i stick with my 3rd party synths.
i lean towards zenbeats as they are very responsive and working on it constantly to keep it supported and updated features.
ns2 is a great looking daw and quite fun, but i don’t know if there are future plans such as clip launching and audio, should that day come i’ll open it a lot more. i made a track in it yesterday and it was a great time, editing the midi is a bit easier, but zenbeats isn’t complicated either
@reasOne and @ehehehe , both great synopsis
I mean, he's not wrong lol. Seems that if AUM isn't someone's thing, the best DAW is a combination of NS2/BM3 + Cubasis. Some really dig ZB, but the UI makes me uninstall. I honestly keep reinstalling thinking that the new features will entice me to dig deep. Love roland just wish they would rebuild the UI to be sexier and more intuitive.
@ehehehe :What did you mean by “No in sync jam sessions”? You meant no clip launching?
Lately I’ve been eyeing Reason 11 which always struck me as the ultimate iOS contraption that somehow got stuck on desktop.. Anyone with me?
30 day free trial. It's pretty decent. Love that it is a vst now. Will probably only get intro though since it's $99 and has Europa, thor, Kong and rytmik. Wish they would put some love into Compact.
I use zenbeats, because it supports mpe midi. I can use it with my roli block and artiphon orba.
@Lil_Stu07 Intto is a steal! What do you mean by compact?
the UI used to be my biggest complaint with Zenbeats. Then I did a few projects with it, and the UI wasn’t such a problem; in fact, there are times that I get frustrated with the Cubasis UI since then. I’m not a huge fan of the long press to open a menu, but the rest of the workflow ended up being pretty quick once I got used to it.
But ... you’ll waste an hour of your life approximately every 1,800 long presses.
Nothing against long presses but in Zenbeats they're far too slow.
Apps that work well use a 400-600ms long-press delay while Zenbeats sleeps for more like 1200ms.
Much too slow and annoying.
@wim great calculation 😅

ZenBeats just feels a bit 'off' as an iOS app. It feels like what it is; a cross platform app with little or no platfrom-sepcifc attention to detail.
I am phobic of apps that don't feel 'just right' on iOS. I don't tend to be able to get over the basic taps, long-taps, etc. not feeling right. No amount of time will make ZB feel good to me. And I'd rather use a more limited app that feels 'right'.
NS2 does feel good to use. I've stopped thinking about what's missing -- especially as some of the 'easy' low-hanging fruit issues have never been tackled -- and use it the way it's probably intended -- as a mostly closed shop app. Whenever I try to do more with it, it falls apart quickly. So I tend to record audio outside of NS2 and then just trigger loops as samples in Slate instead. Like I used to do with my old hardware samplers back in t' day.
I tried to use iOS as a replacement for desktop for a while and it wasn't until I stopped doing that and just used iOS for its strengths that things started to click. I've used Logic way more since 'switching' to iOS!
When i first downloaded ZB i hated it. I thought it looked like a games console DAW, like something i would have had on the PS2 and i deleted it. I downloaded it again when it had the free auv3 upgrade and haven’t stopped using it. Mainly because i make tracks with it and there are no obstacles. Every other app i have used has had something that slows me down or needs workarounds but ZB i find similar to ableton with my workflow.
It’s not going to replace ableton but I haven’t turned the laptop on in the last month as I’m enjoying it so much
Drambo in AUM is my other go to but it’s a different experience and i like two use them for different needs, sound and style. Two good options to have
Exactly my thoughts. Zenbeats functions great on an iPad and like you said it eliminates so many of the obstacles you run into on iOS. There is def improvement to be made as I mentioned before but overall it feels good and gets down n dirty when needed
I like ZB, but the UI I don't like, Roland needs to do lots of work on UI.
Oh, THAT! Lol, I plumb forgot about that one!
@reasOne : Great comment and don’t forget , while it might not replace Albeton as of yet, there will probably be a Zenbeats 3 so who knows ?
deleted. misread a post.
