A couple of questions about midi and MPE

Is there a way to use the interface of Shoom as a midi controller? Can I use the interface of Shoom to control Animoog?

Is there an app that do MPE by hand gesture with the camera?

What cool iOS apps do you use as a midi controller? I already use Velocity Keyboard and I love it.

Any suggestion are welcome.

Thank you all!

    It only accepts MIDI in.

Not that I've seen. But there are some Theramin (hand motion controller) apps but not MPE.

That's a great choice. The surface in Gestrument Pro, GeoShred and ThumbJam are great too.

I'm sure we'll see more input.

  • Ribbons can send MPE midi out and its layout is very similar to Shoom.
    https://apps.apple.com/dk/app/ribbons-touch-instrument/id898059305

AC Sabre uses motion sensors to send midi data, I believe also MPE (but I’m not sure)

Actually for MPE I prefer hardware. Striso board coming soon!
Sensel is nice. Write and ask for a grid layout, please. They need more requests to do it.
The iPad is for me the sound source.

  • Thank you all for your suggestions, really appreciate!

  • Sensel Morph has firmware problems and it seems they will be difficult to fix. If you are not using the top row on the Buchla thunder layout this may not be an issue, but it may take a while to get sorted.

That's correct. The Sensel customer support team does a great job, but the firmware issues aren't fixed for a long time. I had several times contact with them and they admit the very slow firmware development. They offered me to return my Morph, and I accepted that.

  • Noob question; Can the Touché be an alternative to the Sensel Morph or not?

    Joué not Touché, my bad.

I used to have this serious gimmick called iRing. It was IK multimedia and you had this ring with some dots on it and the camera saw it and responded to gesture. It wasn’t MPE just regular MIDI. It is now defunct and useless and one of many reasons not to buy IK multimedia. To be fair, I knew it was a mistake when I purchased it and did so anyway.

AC Sabre does MPE with accelerometer and gyroscope. You just hold the phone in your hand and then do the gestures. Not with the camera, but it might be part of what you wanted with using gestures, only you have to hold it or strap it on.

I haven’t used AC Sabre in a long time and really don’t care for it because I just prefer a keyboard. Anything with gestures just doesn’t work for me is the reason I don’t care for AC Sabre but I always leave it installed on my phone just in case.

My favorite MPE touch controllers are GeoShred and sometimes Thumbjam, though I prefer GeoShred over thumbjam.

  • I don't have one, but the Linnstrument seems the best - but also one of the priciest - mpe hardware solutions

Perhaps for guitar or other fretted instruments players. I‘m happy with my Haken Continuum (the real one, not Mini). Works perfect with iPad (mpe editor still not there) and the internal synth (Eagan Matrix) is amazing. It‘s not the cheapest, but worth every penny.

The Haken Continuum is my dream instrument since I saw one of my hero play with it (a guy from Montreal too, see video below). But my bank account say NO.

It does look good, but so expensive. Are you saying it might be a better choice for string players?

  • @Montreal_Music , https://appsliced.co/app?n=touchscaper&l=list is a great app in its own right. Well worth getting. Rob is a great developer who has more recently introduced moodunits. Whether Touchscaper can do what you are asking for I am afraid I don’t know, will let other more knowledgeable members answer that.

Oh, I didn't know that, thanks for sharing. I was waiting for a grid layout, Linnstrument like, otherwise I'm not interested.

@Montreal_Music the original Joué supported MPE but had real problems with velocity (I think?) - the new iteration doesn't support MPE out of the box (I don't even know it is at all supported)

The Linnstrument is by far one of the best MPE hardware controllers out there. It comes in two sizes, price is high but not unreachable, there is no need for software (settings are done in the device). It plays midi MPE, regular MIDI, has a sequencer, arpegiattor and cc faders. Split screen, so you can have to layouts at once. Then there is a supportive community (like this one) and the best customer support I have ever encounter by the creator, inventor himself.

As @Ploe says, the layout might intimidate keyboard players but if you play string instruments is very easy to get your head around. On the other side, being isomorphic it only requires a little effort to learn where the notes are and also the lights help in that. Note that this type of layout is getting popularity (Novation Launchpad, Ableton Push, Polyend Medusa)

The other soon to be released MPE controller is the Striso Board. https://www.striso.org Its form factor goes pretty well with the iPad. Again, new note layout but nothing that cannot be learned.

There is also a new one coming (I can't remember the name but it looks like a Roli Block on steroids), which may appeal to blinking light lovers.

To me MPE is the closest I can get of playing a "regular/expressive" (?) instrument (as I would play a bass, a violin, a flute...) so I prefer the physicality of a hardware controller rather the iPad screen.

    So go and get one!

  • ‘There is also a new one coming (I can't remember the name but it looks like a Roli Block on steroids), which may appeal to blinking light lovers.‘ - Anyone know the name of this?

Oh man, I would love a Linnstrument. Which size do you have @despego?

  • It could be the erae touch?

    @Gavinski

  • Yes, @Krupa , that’s it.

@Gavinski if you play with two hands, have the place, the budget and/or the need for extended control I would go for the big one. I started with that, traded it later for the smaller one (still 2xlaunchpads)

Now I’ll tell you a secret: I’ve sold it too 😱
I’m going to regret it, sure, but I’m excited about the striso and needed the money for a Launchpad and a launch control.

Wow, super speedy reply from Olympia (impressed):

"Open up the editor tab using the the wrench button in the top right. Then choose “KEYS” and tap the MIDI button to open up the MIDI settings dialog. You’ll want to choose MPE and set your output from there.

    Hope that helps!"
