Isn't it possible to transmit iPhone screen to Mac (QuickTime) while using Camera Connection Kit?

Hey everybody

I often use QuickTime to record my iPhone's screen. Usually I can simply connect my iPhone using a Lightning USB cable to my Mac, see https://osxdaily.com/2016/02/15/howto-record-iphone-screen-mac-quicktime/.

However, when using a Camera Connection Kit in between, it doesn't seem to work for me anymore:

The interesting thing is that copy&pasting between Mac and the iPhone still works, so there seems to be some shared functionality.

Anyone can confirm this? As I'd like to record live looping performances it would be great to somehow still be possible to record my screen, even though I'm using a CCK (to connect my external audio interface to it). Any suggestions how to accomplish that?

In the end, I think I will have to mount an external camera anyway above myself so not only the iPhone's screen will be recorded but also my BlueBoard on the ground, and especially how I'm interacting with it. But it would be nice to display the iPhone's screen "picture-in-picture".

Thanks.

  • I just found https://www.5kplayer.com/airplay/ which allows to act as an AirPlay receiver and record my iPhone's screen. The cool thing is that it also records my iPhone's audio.

  • Unfortunately the Lightning port on the CCK3 is just for charging...
...I would have wished it was a 'regular' lightning port so I could use the iPad with an USB audio interface and pipe the audio using IDAM to my mac but it's no-go...

  • The lightning port is only charging on that. However, you could probably stream into OBS one way or another. Are you running music apps on your phone and trying to record that screen but need the cck for a controller? Or for an audio interface? You could always use the iOS screen recorder and edit it together later. But with OBS it may be possible to record the iPhone as a screen capture, I’m not sure.

Or airplay to an Apple TV and then connect the output of that to OBS, which would work for sure (you’ll need a capture device, I just bought a few on Amazon that arrive tomorrow, search Goodan hdmi usb and you’ll find them- they were recommended highly). If you don’t have an Apple TV, you can get used 3rd gen ones for about $30-$40 on eBay. I got one for use when I do conference type sound gigs to make it easier for people to connect to a projector and it works great.

  • Copy/Paste is working over WiFi/Bluetooth not over the wire.
My first thought was why stream video at all, why not just use the iPhone screen recorder?> @josh83 said:

Copy and Paste us working over the air (Wifi / Bluetooth), not over the wire.

  • Airplay may work but it adds an annoying amount of latency for realtime usage :(

QuickTime can record directly from an AppleTV connected to the same network.
The lag is very noticeable when doing AirPlay to AppleTV and capturing the video from the AppleTV using QuickTime.

It works but be ready for 1/2 to 1 second latency, thankfully there's no audio or frame-dropouts which is nice.

This would not be an issue if the iOS device was able to play the sound locally when doing Airplay since the lag would not cause any issues while performing.

The best solution so far is to use the built-in screen recorder to capture both audio & video and the mic can be used for voice-overs, everything in perfect sync...

    Cheers!

  • Thanks guys for your additions. I indeed didn't know about the in-built screen recording feature.

    Cheers!
