What iPad DAW can cover my needs?

I was for a while a MPC One owner but now Im on the iPad with a focusrite soundinterface instead, and now Im looking for an app / DAW to cover the things I want to do.

I want to be able to record both MIDI and audio.
When recording MIDI I want also to be able to record the MIDI cc data, for making automation of my synths - fx not recording notes but only cc, and playing with the parameters changing according to what I recorded on the "automation track".
I want to be able to make parts, fx A, B and C parts, and then loop one part until I press the next one, then loop that one until I press another etc.

Ive tried Beatmaker 3 and Gadget 2.
I generally like BM3 but I cant find a way to make the parts work. There is a way to make Scenes but if a track isnt the same length as the other it will loop different places and thats not what I want.
Another thing that bothers me with BM3 is that I find it difficult to edit recorded audio, maybe its me, but it was really difficult for me to copy one part to another in a recording.
The third thing is that it sometimes crashes and I loose whatever Ive made since last autosave. It seems that its a bit buggy atm and thats not what I want for something I will use live.

Then I tried Gadget 2 which is able to do the "parts" things that I want with its Scene mode where it plays one scene in a loop until you press another scene, and it then plays to the end of the scene and changes to the next one.
The problem here is also the audioedit feature seems really bad.

I dont know what the parts/scene feature is called in the right terms so I find it difficult to search for the feature when Im looking at other DAW's.

I know that there is iMPC Pro 2 that should cover my needs, but I tried it and found it really buggy.

Im looking at Cubasis 3 that seems like the best DAW, but Im not sure if I can do the parts thing ?

Any suggestions for what to go with? :-)

Thanks in advance

    It's called 'clip launching'.

There are a few apps that can (Zenbeats?) but you might not be completely satisfied with any of them.

I gave up trying to get iOS to do everything, and split tasks/activities between platforms. There's nothing to rival Bitwig on iOS yet. And nothing on desktop to rival Patterning 2, Samplr etc. I like NanoStudio 2 as a portable DAW, but it doesn't do clip launching, or record audio tracks, so, um... Well, just to offer another point of view.

Before you spend $$ on a new hope, be aware that Black Friday sales are coming at the end of the month.

    Best of luck.

  • Sorry, but there is no DAW on iOS that meets all of your requirements. There is also no DAW that I would rely on in a live situation.

Zenbeats has clip launching, but I don't think it really works like you want it to. It doesn't have audio editing other than setting the beginning and ending of a loop. GarageBand's clip launcher might be an option. Have you tried that? Of course, it has lots of other limitations. There are no other DAWs on iOS that really have clip launching. @ehehehe 's suggestion for Cubasis maybe? It's not clip launching like you're after but maybe it could work for you.

All-in-one solutions on iOS are elusive. You generally need to use different tools in combination for what they can each do.

  • @colonel_mustard thanks for your inputs - and good point with black friday sales. Im not sure that it is clip launching Im looking for - in the MPC One youre working with a timeline as in other DAWs and that timeline is then called Sequence 1, and then you can create Sequence 2 that is a new timeline and you can then cue a Sequence to start after the one playing.
I think clip launching is more to be able to have single clips (fx a bassline) and be able to start that with a click, right?

@ehehehe its almost there, I just tried it in the LE version. The problems is when I have fx 3 different "parts" and want to go from A to C, it will then play thru B before going to C and looping that - the other thing is that if Im going from B to A it will start A as soon as I longpress A. But good suggestions, I dont know if there is a way to change some settings so it will work on the other way?

@wim Ive looked at GarageBand also, its working as I want to, but the problem there is that when I cue the next part, it changes right away instead of waiting till the part is done - anyone knows if its possible to change that behaviour? :-)

Or any other suggestions. Thanks for the inputs so far. Im also willing to use more apps or whats needed to do the job, I just dont know which ones :-)

  • If it’s any help, in both BM3 and Zenbeats, you can get scenes to change when you want to as long as you hit the change within the last measure. I don’t remember GarageBand changing clips immediately, I thought they changed on bar lines too.

You probably just have to live with the need to hit pattern changes within the last bar before you want the change to happen. I can’t think of any DAW besides Gadget that works the way you want it to for clip launching.

  • @wim in BM3 I cant really get Scenes to work when my recorded audio isnt the exact same length, and I cant find a way to cut the samples to make them fit, so when Im looping a scene the parts are looping different places - which makes it unusable :/ Am I missing some setting or something to fix that? :-)
Ill take a look at Zenbeats too. Unfortunately Garageband is changing right away even through Im dragging in the last bar. Strange behaviour ;-)

  • Ah I see, in garagebands LIVE LOOPS mode it changes after next bar, but in the normal track view its also possible to have parts and when you change part there it doesnt wait till the end of the bar - :-)

OK, 'Scenes' in Ableton language, but you seem to be on the trail already.

I don't know what your best option is, but the manuals of the main contenders should have precise info about per-clip length and syncing options and how they loop, if they loop, follow actions etc. Failing that, iOS developers are generally friendly and responsive, so you can ask them directly.

If you do find something that makes you happy, please report back :)

I don't see any reason why you can't get the lengths you need using the audio editor in BM3. It's a powerful editor. Maybe your best route is to learn that.

Ahh. I was talking about the clip launcher, not the timeline. I see in a later post you figured that out. The clip launcher is excellent in GarageBand.

  • Okay, I found out how to edit the length of the clips in BM3 so for now thats the best choice, but Im waiting for the right thing to show up - it must be out there somewhere, or come someday ;-)
    Thanks for everybodys help!
