Impact / Return To Zappa

edited November 2020 in Creations

The spirit of Frank Zappa returns to me again and again. This time with a better demo of @McD’s modified GeoFlute preset. I will ask him to post a link to download it as it is superior, IMO, to the presets offered in GeoShred... not so blowy on the attack.

Interesting combo of instruments on this one. For the leads two tracks of GeoFlute McD (one with echo) as mentioned, GeoSax and iFretless Bass Clarinet (a wonderful emulation!) The “impact” backing is made of three Noise presets, Fluid Bass, Dynamic Pad and Solo Strings. A great Church Bell from PureSynthPlatinum and Ravenscroft 275.

I like the production on this one. Presence and clarity, I think.

  • slow Wazoo, very nice sir

In fact I like this track better than most tracks on "Jazz from hell" except "Night School" 😉

    Great sound @LinearLineman!!
The spirit of FZ also included radical style changes within the same song, maybe you're up to try that as well?
I enjoyed his jumps between "Classical FZ weirdness", RnB, Country, Johnny Guitar Watson and Rock a lot.

    C20th musical highpoints

  • @R_2 , thank you! Jazz From The Interregnum. Even more hellish!
@Paul16, thanks... yeah, the Wazoo is quite a bit slower these days.
Download @McD’ s preset if you have GeoFlute!

Thanks @rs2000 for the praise and the good idea. Maybe Zappa will zap me with five minutes of genius time to accomplish that.

  • @Paul16 Oh yes, you're right, I totally forgot about this song!!

@LinearLineman I'm sure he'll let you know soon. Get ready already 😊

  • Zappa was a musical polymath:

    1. Creative improviser in the traditional sense... playing linear lines over chord progressions
    2. Modern composer that loved writing for trained orchestral musicians
    3. Pop song writer

His ability to manage bands that had the same skills was his greatest feat, IMHO. He would rehearse the band and tell them play "Mud Sharks" as a polka today and change it to reggae
    the next.

He attracted a percussionist into his band, Ruth Underwood, that could play the most difficult notated music but never improvised. Frank, I think, respected that because what she could do was more important than what he might have wanted. When there's some
xylophone or marimba in the mix you can be sure the band is playing from a chart and
not just randomly creating that madness... it's carefully scripted by the master.

I think @LinearLineman is the anti-Ruth. He threw away the paper and the charts years ago
and never looked back. I've asked him a few times what the chords are to one of his creations and he replies: "I have no idea" but he can re-listen to the piece and tell me what he hears. So, the music theory and years of listening to music is the base for his creative flights of the imagination. But we would have to take him hostage to make him start writing out parts and arrangements again like when he was writing for the stage.

Didn’t Zappa consider to run for president at some point? Sigh... world could use some Zappa more than ever.

Sorry for derailing your thread a bit

@R_2. The world seems pretty different since Zappa. But his music, fortunately, is timeless. However, 100,000,000 people later Trump sort of followed his advice.

  • There’s an awesome looking doc premiering on Showtime in the next month or so on Zappa, looks good.

    True that
