ToneBoosters BitJuggler video walkthrough - vintage digital FX (winners announced!)

ToneBoosters BitJuggler video walkthrough - vintage digital FX (FREE iOS COPIES TO GIVE AWAY!)

A great desktop/iOS app for getting a vintage digital feel. This can add an an interesting bite to tracks, it can give you a lofi vibe or can descend into complete sonic annihilation. The inclusion of an inbuilt lfo is a nice touch, as are its envelope followers, giving you much more control over bit rate reduction and resampling than most apps do. If you are watching in the first 2 days of release of this video you might have a chance to win one of several free copies of the iOS version - see the comment pinned at the top of the youtube comments section for details.

If you find this useful please give it a thumbs-up folks, thanks for your support.

  • Hehe... Thanks Gav!
Didn’t know I need another bitcrush fx :p

  • Yeah, this video totally sells this effect. It's so delightful to hear such tingly crystalline edges exposed :)

  • Thanks guys! Here’s a quick run through the presets on OPL for that more 80s computer game vibe:

I love this description btw - tingly crystalline edges indeed!

  • Just to confirm, I finally got a concrete reply from Jeroen, I'll have 3 codes to give away. Details in the comment pinned at the top of the YouTube comments section, as usual.

  • Edit: the lucky winners are
    A Mac
    Richard Lawton
    Aeger Smoothie
    Congrats guys 🎉🎉🎉🎉

  • Love the sound and possibilities of Bitjuggler so far -

BUT - there is a bit big but ...

I noticed a very weird and uncool behavior of the app -

I left my AUM session (including Bitjuggler as an AUV3) by itself and went to the other room - after 10 or 15 mins I came back and heard super weird clicks coming out of my IPad - I thought its broke and was irritated - before I saw what happened -

The channel which included Bitjuggler showed a clipping by more then +500 db

The screenshots can prove it - since I could not believe this number myself - and one sees clearly in the second screenshot that the clipping disappeared after I removed Bitjuggler from the channel ...

I am very happy that my Ipadˋs speakers still work and I am more then happy that my monitors were not mounted to my iPad in this moment ,,,

Is somebody from Tonebooster present in this forum? Do they read bug-reports here?

I would be very happy if this very unpleasant behavior could get sorted out - cause otherwise it is a very cool and great sounding effect ...!

Actually, you are onto something there. I hadn't noticed this at the point I made my video, but last night accidentally left it running in the background and experienced something similar. Didn't specifically track it down to a BitJuggler problem but I think you are right. Let's see what @DJB (the dev) has to say.

  • Just looking at the picture... are you sure it’s from BJ? Could be Agonizer. Shockwave I think had similar problem on release... or at least I remember reading something similar.

True - I removed both apps —- in the screenshot ... hm - weird - maybe I was a bit in panic and it was late last night ... somehow I was „afraid“ something could be damaged ...

But when I recall it correctly ,,, the „clicking“ sound disappeared in the moment when I took BitJuggler of the channel ...

Maybe I will another test later -.. but this time with the speaker being disconnected from the beginning ...

By the way - what I wanted to ask - can there happen some real harm to the hardware by this kind of „clipping“? Is it a real clipping or virtual one?

Now you irritated me - and I re-checked my screenshots ...

And now I remember again - how it actually happened ... yesterday ...

The First screenshot shows my initial reaction - after hearing the clipping my first thought was that the instrument caused it - and my instant reaction was to eject Agonizer - but as you see in the red clipping and the number +543 - the clipping stayed and Agonizer hasn’t caused it -

Then I started to eject all the other effects of this channel - and none of them had an impact on the clipping - just Bitjuggler did -

And this shows the last picture - Bitjuggler is ejected from the channel strip and the clipping disappears ...

  • @Bon_Tempi
I’m not 100% sure, but I think AUM has a built in protection and iPad speakers shouldn’t be affected (especially with measurement mode on).
That said, you can never know... so it’s recommended to keep a limiter on you main out.

  • Definitely headphones can be affected. I had to get my grados repaired after using woott in aum too carelessly without a limiter

  • @Bon_Tempi
Something like BJ with some modulation can easily lead to self oscillation even with the quietest noise input. And it may take few seconds for AUM to detect ‘no more clipping’.
Probably best to report to both devs. :)

@Bon_Tempi could you please share a screenshot of the BitJuggler settings in which the issue occurs, in AUM without any other plugin active? We've been trying really hard to replicate the issue but so far everything is rock stable... Thanks!

It might also be good to see what happens if you remove the plugins that run after BitJuggler. It would not be impossible that very low signal levels produced by BitJuggler cause issues in the plugins next in the chain.

  • Congrats to the winners. This one looks sweet

That kinda depends on which countries AppStore one looks at since the star rating is per country :)

This is US store. I’d expect more from the good ol’ USA! Regardless this dev deserves the support IMHO.
