Rediscovering BeatHawk - timing?
I've recently been mining my purchased apps to make better use of the money I've spent. Beathawk is one of them. It wasn't hard to get my head (back) around its use, but using it in AUM as an AU seems to be a bit problematic. The issues are mostly about transport.
My first question is whether an AU instance can properly work in Song mode. After setting up a Song and pressing transport Play in AUM, the Song doesn't start at the beginning. When I press Stop twice on the AUM transport, then open the Beathawk interface, the playhead position in BH is not at the beginning. If I press Stop in the Beathawk transport, it resets. If I follow up then and press Play in the AUM transport, sometimes BH starts at the beginning of a song and sometimes it doesn't.
I don't know if it's a bug. I can't find anything in the BH documentation that specifically says it DOESN'T work, but nothing that says it DOES either.
I also noticed something a little strange in the documentation. The manual shows a line in Preferences for Ableton Link, but I don't see that line in my actual preferences. I know I'm up to date on the app. I'm at the last iteration of iOS 13 (waiting on 14 to settle down).
There are some awesome choices for sound banks in Beathawk, and I'd love to buy more, but right now without Song mode working as it seems it should, I want to hold off. If I get feedback that in fact there might be a bug, I'd be happy to do the research and report it to UVI,
Any comments would be appreciated!
Edit: I sent a report to UVI...

Link makes no sense in an AU app because the sync comes from the host. So you won't see it as an option when running as an AU.
You might want to try turning Link off in the AUM metronome settings to see if that changes anything. AUM has a thing called "Sync Quantum" which causes it to wait for an even measure break from Link before starting. It may be that Beathawk is starting immediately while AUM is waiting.
That may have nothing to do with it, but it's an easy thing to try.
Good suggestion! Thx. I'll try it.
It does appear to help, I think. I turned off Link in AUM, added 2 instances (2 different songs) of BeatHawk. Now at least I'm getting them both playing from the beginning. Funny, when I turned Link back on in AUM, now it's still working. So just for kicks I opened Xequence (another Linked app). Sure enough I now see the Sync Quantum happen, and BH doesn't play. When I kill the instance of Xequence, even with Link on, AUM+BH work again. So maybe it IS the Sync Quantum.
Is Midi Clock disabled in Beathawk? If not, I think that might be the problem. It should be disabled.
Sorry to hijack the thread but does anyone know about Beathawk midi out?
I just wanna run it inside Cubasis 3 as an AU and for it's sequencer to output it's midi data to C3's timeline. It does but the note data layed down, whilst in-time, doesn't correspond to the original sounds.
I've tried various different settings in BH's midi options but to no avail. I guess I'll just use is a sound module but if anyone's got any experience of this is I'd love to here.
Yes it is disabled and has been from the start.
It's complicated, but you're right about the note being different. I haven't fully researched it, but I do know that in Pad mode, at least for me, it sent note 60 on MIDI ch1 for Pad 1, note 60 on MIDI ch2 for Pad 2, etc. I wrote a quick Mozaic script to convert the notes so they make more sense on output. I'm afraid that the BH MIDI out doesn't make much sense as input to another synth without some conversion to meet your needs.
BeatHawk midi out is, I suspect meant to allow the notes in patterns and sequences to be sent out. The pads are really there for internal use. For sending notes out, you would use its keyboard not pads.
That points pretty solidly to a Beathawk bug then. It seems like it may be responding to something other than the official "start" coming from the host.
Thanks to you both for answering my thread hijack.
That's settled then, I'll give up
Yes. That's what happens in keyboard mode.
