Holes
Sweeping leaves is the perfect time to listen to the playlist of stuff you don't know: Yo La Tengo (Nowhere Near).
I have by accident (and then perhaps design) avoided them, especially as I was told often and again that they were perfect for me.
DIdn't know what I was listening to, but liked it enough I had to stop and make sure I knew who: Yo La Tengo.
What else by them comes immediately fondly to your mind?

Painful is one of my desert island records but that's probably nostalgia (that riff in "motel 6" was delivered from the heavens). Electro pura is probably a more objectively regarded high water mark--and features "Pablo and Andrea", their most gorgeous song in an oeuvre filled with them. Great band and it was a highlight of my band life when my band opened for YLT.
"Autumn Sweater," "From a Motel 6," "Big Day Coming," "You Can Have It All."
Listening to these songs now, I am struck by how similar I find them to Spiritualized, which at the time I would have put in different galaxies.
@lukesleepwalker Where did you play with YLT?
I like their album of (mostly) covers - Fakebook.
I have no cool stories of a life previously famous dammit but I do note that the fourth track on Electr-o-pura is 'Tom Courtenay' and I did once sell him a house
I've long avoided them, too, and not for good reasons. Too 'Pitchfork pantheon', maybe?
I do like their song 'Drug Test'. Chased it down after seeing Hal Hartley's wonderful 'Surviving Desire'.
Whilst avoiding them, I went to a gig in the early 2000s, but I don't remember much about it. The take home was an unexpected rant from the frontman, that Love were playing in town that same night (maybe Arthur Lee solo? I forget that part) and he was incredulous. "Why did you come here? Love are playing! We wanted to go!" etc.
@ExAsperis99 it was at a club in Ohio that we played at frequently. I still have a poster from the event somewhere in my collection of things. Found it about a year ago whilst cleaning out the basement.
@JohnnyGoodyear that is a hilarious coincidence! Tom C is also a great tune--that melody is ace.
Excellent. Song AND movie rec all in one
I'm reluctant to shoo you off by saying that this film is perfect for you, so I'll just say that I loved it.
Turns out they've crossed paths a few times. Mr. Hartley shot the video to 'From a Motel 6' and YLT cameo as a Salvation Army band in one of his later films.
Meanwhile, 'Pablo and Andrea' has become my song of the day over here. Nice tip @lukesleepwalker
Glad to have been of service, colonel.
When that last guitar "solo" explodes in just after Georgia repeats "someone came and took all the roses away" it just makes my heart want to leap out of my chest.
@JohnnyGoodyear Have you listened to Akron/Family at all? You may enjoy a listen to this album:

I have not, at all or ever. But I have an upcoming External Distraction Requirement and thus will plug this in. Thanks for the tip!
Best tunes by Primal Scream?
The thread title "Holes" immediately brings to mind the opener from Mercury Rev's 90s psych masterpiece Deserter's Songs:
Also, love this in-studio session with YLT:
