Christmas is coming...
...and not only am I getting fat I am also seriously considering asking Mrs. Santa for a BEHRINGER DEEPMIND 12 which I have had suggested to me by one of our own reprobates here on AB. I DO want a synth of some sort and this seems to tick many boxes for the money.
Does anyone here so gathered know of any reason or impediment that I should consider before making steps towards such a marriage?
Comments
The only negative comment I’ve seen about DM12 is fan noise. That put me off immediately. Don’t know if that’s common thing or single faulty unit.
They have the desktop version as well if you don’t want the keyboard on it or already have one or more keyboards anyway. When that first came out I was pretty interested, but the limited waveforms and I remember polyphony dropped to 6 if you needed detuned Sawtooth patches as it only has one Osc that can do Sawtooth, so I think there was a switch to double it at the cost of polyphony. You will need that for your Jump patch naturally, but 6 polyphony can do Jump alright.
I think I’m getting fat too, I blame the pandemic.
What did you end up getting instead and are you happy with it?
@JohnnyGoodyear in case you’ve not seen this Loopop is hard (impossible?) to beat for hardware reviews:
I just went with sticking with iOS. Right before I got my iPad back in 2016 I got a Studiologic Sledge. I was not happy with it. I think I got it because I was used to gigging back then and wanted something standalone and always complained about not having a proper polysynth. I then got the iPad and realized I should have done that in the beginning. By the time Deepmind came out later on I think that same year, I decided I don’t need a polysynth and will just use my iPad. I mostly just use Kauldron or Xeeon, but I haven’t been synthing a whole lot lately.
I just have some mono synths like Bass Station 2, and Neutron. Then I have Circuit and this Korg Kross 2 that is not a fun synth and I just got to do some gigs a while back. I would consider buying a proper polysynth again, but not sure what I’d really want. It’s a long process researching all the things.
I have heard actual consternation online about build quality after some while of ownership, I forget the sources. If I remember I’ll post, to put you off.
After Christmas
Idea: Ask for a Prophet-10 and compromise on a Prophet-6?
There were some good deals a few months ago, that might have brought the Novation Peak within reach (£780?). Maybe Black Friday will bring those deals back, or similar?
My main concern with the DM12 is mojo. Does it have any? I've not been in the same room as one, so I can't speak to this. Will it inspire? Will it excite you a year from now? Will it be a gift that keeps on giving?
Some other concerns include "Will it hold its value?" and "Will this object be in landfill during my lifetime?"
I have an OB-6 myself, and it's an absolute joy, 4 years on.
Right now, my shortlist of eyebrow-raising, affordable synths includes:
Elektron Digitone
Korg Wavestate
Korg/Arp Odyssey
Not sure how I feel about the Behringer 2600, or the Moog Grandmother.
None of these compare to the DM12, of course, but... Options.
Behringer mono/Poly is shipping real soon. Thought decision.
I blame Mrs Santa for the increase in my obvious self. A while back I suffered bad back spasms and she starting making me (bless her) a very effective weed infusion. Worked well, for pain and sleep. But, you know, the munchies....
I do like the idea of putting everything on hold (as regards a decision), but Christmas comes and goes and that which is not requested never again appears
Well, this is very good information and pondering UNTIL the last line which suggests that (despite your other suggestions) the DM12 is of course the best of the bunch....however, you have given me a good morning's worth of snuffling about over these other options.
I must be honest and say that I have watched Mister Loopop's excellent video on DM carefully and while it made me more confident that I could make the thing work, the dot-matrix quality screen did put me off, although he also uses a related app which is interesting. Thanks for the insight...
Shit, I see what you mean. Phrasing. Intention was to highlight that these synths are all markedly different in what they do and how they do, so it's like trying to compare apples with newspapers, or horse riding, or justice, or some other thing that you can't really compare apples with.
All should be within reach of Mrs. Goodyear's accountant, is the common thread.
Wavestate can be jaw-dropping, although it's potentially a bit deep and divey and it's built from plastic (I think - can't use your own samples, neither).
Odyssey doesn't offer presets or polyphony, but you could really know it, and we know that it sounds amazing. That one comes with a case, too, and it's the cheapest.
Digitone's an odd duck, but it has special sauce coming out the wazoo (Elektron sequencer, DAW integretion, iPad interface etc.). It's already a solid classic.
It's not an exhaustive list. Other synths are available! Just thought I'd put these ones on the table.
Care to write about the decisions that pointed you to this particular synth?
I'm looking for similar and there is a lot of competition about.
Get the Deep Mind. Then go Vegan to avoid the deep pants.
Love my dm12. Fan noise isn’t an issue at all. I leave mine at the lowest setting, don’t notice it a bit, and have had zero problems with it in the studio.
The Digitone is a vastly more capable synth. The DM12 is as basic as it gets at the core of it. They stuffed it full with effects to make up for that but, the UI and the one single knob you can use to change parameters on that screen is a disaster. Probably the most boring/annoying synth I’ve ever tried to make patches on. The Digitone on the other hand is a pleasure to work with and it can coax up a much wider palette of sounds before adding any effects.
I would also look at Modals two latest, Argon8 and Cobalt8, before grabbing a DM.
Regarding fans, yeah there are two fans inside the DM, some would call it a massive engineer failure, some would argue that it might be good to have if you’re doing a live set in the Sahara desert 🐪. 🤷♂️
Thanks for fan noise clarification bit!
Not JUST my ass. My (m)ass in general
I've been pondering K13 as well. And have been staring at the others mentioned here and elsewhere (thanks all! @ChrisG @legsmechanical @NoiseHorse @colonel_mustard @Proppa @DMan @0tolerance4silence @u0421793), but now I'm wondering if I should be spending her money on a better delivery system (keyboard) rather than any particular synth etc....and then one starts thinking that all this GAS is more as a smokescreen from the true issue which is get on and write some damn new songs would you. Sadly, that last part can't be so readily purchased etc. Sigh Onward.
Linnstrument?
I still think a Prophet-6 would make a fine controller.
I'll stop trying to spend your wife's money now.
Well, soon.
I wish you luck.
It's the year of the muffin top.
