Strange iOS gdrive issue

Guys, i have a very strange and very frustrating problem when working with cloud storage in Files app. Let’s say I want to get a folder with samples into iPad. I would upload it to one of the cloud storage services like One Drive, Google Drive, iCloud. When I’m then copying the folder to iPad storage, more often than not, it will get stuck:

Am I doing something wrong? I cannot believe it’s that bad.

It just takes time, sometimes a lot. Particularly when there are large numbers of files in any one folder. If there are more than somewhere around 1,000 files, it takes a very long time. If there are more than 2,000, it takes an incredibly long time and then often ends up with zero files showing when it completes. This is true for attached storage as well.

I don't even attempt copies of more than 1,000 files in a folder any more.

  • I had a problem transferring samples to external HD on 13.7. When I went to iOS 14.2 no issues.

  • I was really hoping there is something I could do to improve it. Things like this one make me think - why bother to use bloody iOS ? Seriously, I can’t imagine spending $1500 on iPad Pro and then find that I cannot copy a f*****g folder with 200 files from cloud.
I didn’t spend much time on iOS platform and I already bang my head against the wall, Im almost sure there is much more apple nonsense waiting for me to be discovered.

  • I don’t have any issues using Files with Dropbox and iCloud. Sometimes it takes a while for a large number of files (100’s of MB and sometimes into the GB) to transfer but I would expect that. Just takes a little patience but it always works for me. You could also be dealing with network/IP issues.

It’s not Apple/iOS out to get you...

  • I waited 40 minutes and then I had to restart my iPad. I don’t know how it is possible it works for you and it doesn’t for me. Network is not a problem - I have a solid 70mb download 30mb upload fibre. I tried many times with a lot of combinations, different cloud services- and it doesn’t work most of the time.

  • I just tried to compress files into one zip file. I uploaded it to gdrive and this time it copied fine to iPad. But then, I long pressed that compressed file expecting I will have an option to unzip - and I’m not kidding you guys - it freezed !!! Files app stopped reacting, reopening didn’t help. What’s even worse - safari freaked out too - I tried to post this message but safari froze too. Seriously, what a steaming pile of crap. I had to restart iPad. Guys, tell me, is there a poltergeist in my iPad or is the platform really such a miserable piece of crap?

  • Send us a link of the file and someone can check if it’s your file or just your iPad. I don’t use the Files app that much, but have never had any issues with it.

I was going to suggest zipping the files. That's always been my preference for moving large collections around. But it may be that the problem is creating a lot of files in a short time, so it may affect downloading and unzipping in the same way. Bad news.

Yea that’s not right. I guess your on 14.2 then? I’ve done 1.5 GB export and it took awhile maybe 90-120 minutes. But under 100mb should be done in a couple mins.

Are you using a powered usb hub? Apple brand Camera Connection Kit?

How many files are in that folder and its sub folders?

What is the total size of the folder and its contents?

    What OS version?

Check to see if any weird characters are used in any of the file names.

I’ve moved folders with hundreds of files before to iCloud without a problem. You want to zip while you know the files are on the local drive or things get really slow. And unzipping when the file is remote also can be a problem.

Sometimes I had to wait a while with large numbers of files but it ALWAYS works for me. That’s all I can say.
