Roland Studio-Capture USB Audio Interface

Anybody have any experience with these older interfaces and know if they work well with latest iPad and macOS devices?

The I/O looks awesome on such a small format device from almost a decade ago. Curious if anyone has one to provide some insight.

Thanks.

  • I have two baby brother Roland Duo Captures and they work for me still on my iPads.

  • @echoopera I've had 2x Studio-Captures, but unfortunately they aren't class-compliant.
But on Windows, 2x can be combined to make one 30-input interface.

Copy & pasted from my Electronauts post:
You can find the Roland Studio Capture used for around $500. 16 inputs (12x w/ mic pres), 8 outputs. Had 2 several years ago, rock-solid Roland VS drivers (ASIO & WASAPI). Not as low latency as RME, but more stable in my experience than MOTU on Windows. Two can be linked for 30 inputs (linking requires S/PDIF). Preamps are just okay. No ADAT.

Good to hear. I’ve been trying to find an audio input mechanism of 16 or more channels and this one just seems great.

Do you know if they work without being plugged in to a USB host? Can they work stand alone with just gear plugged into it and routed to speakers and headphones?

Ahh I guess the Studio Capture is not class compliant so no iPad, bummer!

  • Hrmmm. Research phase starting again 🤪 i hit up the Elektronauts thread as well. Thanks you two 🙏🏼

  • Hey echo, I posted my reply here on Elektronauts.

  • I'm still crossing my fingers for iConnectivity to make an iConnectAudio8+.
(Trying to go ultra-minimal with just a Windows laptop, iPad, Akai Force, Elektron Digitone Keys, & Intellijel Palette case.)

Yeah. We need something like this Roland I/O that can serve the small footprint setups that require a lot of INS. I’ve got an OT, DigiTone, AS-1, Minilogue, MicroFreak, Maschine+ and the iPad i want to connect via there individual channels so you can see my desire for something like the Roland gear. I’ve got things bridged cia the DigiTone and OT to deal with the 10 inputs i need going to my Scarlet 18i8.

It’s either go the ADAT route or get a nice 16 channel mixer and just sum it all via Stereo to the iPad...Ho hum...first world problems i know.

That Studio Capture looked perfect to pair with the iPad. Shooot.

  • I read that someone tested the iConnectAudio4+ with the Maschine+ and it worked properly when plugged directly into the Maschine+'s USB port.

So imagine an iConnectAudio16+, serving as the audio interface for both an iPad + Windows/MAC laptop, connected directly to the Maschine+, with all audio + MIDI streams routed freely (digitally) between all devices.

In your case, it sounds like your 18i8 + an OctoPre via ADAT would work? You could grab a used one (or Behinger ADA8000 for $150) to test it in the meantime. I could have sworn MOTU made a USB interface with 24 analog I/O in 1 rack, with MIDI I/O. Or at least they used too.

  • Just wanted to chime in to let you all know that I opted for a Scarlett OctoPre8 to connect to my Scarlett 18i8 to expand my I/O. I'll let you all know how it goes once it comes in.

  • Sweet bud! Yeah, let us know how it works out for ya!

Alrighty. OctoPre8 is now feeding an extra 8 channels into my Scarlett 18i8 and everything is showing up in AUM.

    Time to jam 😬

    And buy more gear 🤪
