iOS on Desktop

@ipadbeatmaking, in his excellent weekly, talked about Apple’s announcement that iOS apps would be useable on computers in the future. What do you think about them apples?

Comments

  • No one seems to be talking about how app prices might be affected.

  • Ideally, I'd love it if the desktop/laptop had a touch screen so I could use the same gestures
in GeoShred and other touch-based UI's. That philosophical divide created by the late Steve
Jobs continues to define these types of devices.

MicroSoft didn't impose the distinct and has an OS that runs on both types of devices so they are moving forward with a merged vision... but MS does such a lousy job optimizing
for audio applications and 3rd parties fill the gap but the OS still sits in the middle creating
    headaches.

So, the future seems rosy but it's carrying the sins of it's progenitors: Jobs and Gates.

    Jobs made visionary systems.

Gates sold a boat load of software borrowing the best ideas available to clone/reverse-engineer.

The creatives just want "things" that enable a creative "flow". That's you @LinearLineman.

As a tech nerd, I want open source solutions on cheap hardware. There are some worth playing around with but that's another forum... Raspberry Pi shows promise and even has
    a PianoTeq offering.

  • While i understand that apps which make usage of multi-touch might not be the greatest on mac i think almost 95% of my music apps would run just fine as is since a even a macbook track pad offers things like MPE and velocity keyboard via software these days. The touch bar (even if many hate them) is great for me too and also there is interesting software for it for customization.
Then (sadly) a lot iOS apps are even not that multi-touch optimized as they should, so there would be no difference at all for me using them with a mouse or trackpad.
IOS apps on mac is what i always wanted and now i can get it really. Nice times for me personally.
The mixture from a great trackpad, touchbar, computer keyboard for midi input and short cuts (plus a MPE controller like the Rise25 and an iPhone as multi-touch controller) i can even play a lot more expressive as i could ever on a flat glass with multi-touch.
Of course if a mac had a touch screen it would be great but then i really like to have the screen free and my hands down for performing.
There are many working tricks and workarounds for me as well like using a velocity slider with one hand and play notes with the other and other things.
Short said i would have no problem at all to use ALL my favorite iOS apps as they are right now on a macbook.
Of course if i could not run iOS AUv3 inside the ARM Logic (or will this work?) it would be great to have at least one something like AUM or one iOS DAW on an ARM mac. Otherwise you are stuck with standalone apps.

  • I know many are looking forward to this merge and can understand how it might be beneficial.

To me it would defy the very reason why I’m on a tablet. Namely, for the directness of the interaction with the screen, no mouses and cursors. Multitouch when it comes to touch screen optimised apps is what this is all about for me.

Prices are likely to go up but I don’t believe it will be a drastic rise. It will be hard to tell whether it’s because of iOS macOS merge or the unavoidable post-Covid recession.

  • Lest we forget, the iPad is lighter and less cumbersome.

If you use it really solo, yes. If you connect the magic keyboard thing it weights nearly the same as a macbook air or pro 13".
So if you use an iPad really as tablet it is fantastic but as soon as you have to connect stuff you its much more cumbersome. I also would need more stuff to connect and even less ports there.
Of course you can disconnect these things again but yeah, for tablet use iPad is the best, for a mobile computer it is a nightmare.

  • @clueless... you have to connect a keyboard to a computer, too. When I make a track I usually spend no more than 15 minutes actually playing stuff. The rest, usually several hours, is done tetherless. Also, since I have eye problems, actually seeing the screen is much improved by the better keyboard lighting a tablet provides. I have made tracks without a keyboard, too. Fugue Machine is a great tool for that.

If I were a traditional composer I could just write the piece into StaffPad, but that is beyond my pay grade.

  • I think it will be a big boost for the ios app market overall. more people will be interested in apps that can run in ios and still work in their studio daw environments on mac. I imagine that the market might look similar to how companies like Sugarbytes and Klevgrand currently operate, where you can buy ios only versions of the apps for cheaper than the desktop versions.
Will also hopefully be a bit easier for apps to be implemented cross-platform to begin with, so hopefully more apps coming from the dev pool for ios in general!

I think longterm it could be interesting using AUM in a desktop environment. There isn't really an equivalent for mac at the moment that i know of.

  • I wonder if iOS AUv3 can run inside ARM Logic then? Or is an iOS DAW needed then?
Also not sure if not already all opt out so far :D
