Exploring Imaginando's ultra-powerful controller LK

  • Perfect timing... I bought it and need a better video of which IAP's to get. I also can see that
it fits into Ableton style workflows and I keep saying I'll check it out but I never do. Old dogs... new tricks. Brian damage (sic).

I have to be honest - I didn't love it, but it is SUPER powerful if the workflow works for you.

Thanks for posting - this is great info. Once I unlock them I can't see the prices anymore so I forget to mention them...

  • So happy to see this!
Especially since you initially weren't interested. Yeoman's work. :)

  • I’ve had LK and Matrix only for a while now, and like you, I wasn’t thrilled at the visual design. Still not really, but it has slowly improved in some ways; like that hamburger button, it didn’t use to be there, so someone had to tell me to tap and drag in that general area to slide up to reveal the piano roll for the particular clip.

Now that I somewhat know my way around, I still don’t really like the “looks” of it, while knowing the powerful features it has. I think it could greatly benefit from a “skin” or something to make it look better.

The other thing that bugs me about LK is the cramped feeling, like there’s too much in one small window, sliding the piano roll view up and down out of the way to reach the clip block things. Maybe it’d be better on a 12.9” iPad Pro? Idk feels crowded or something like that on my 11” IPP

Anyway, thanks for doing a video on it, though I’ve never used Apematrix so I was kind of lost on what you were doing there. Now lemme go eat my spinach... ;)

Glad you liked it, folks. I'm not a fan of Imaginando's visual asthetic but there's a lot of potential in there if you van get past the workflow.

I don't see myself using this but I can understand the appeal for sure.

  • Fair play for digging in Daveypoo, I am still procrastinating like hell with this one 😂. I dig how honest you are when you aren't too into something.

FRMS is short for 'Frames', not 'Forms' btw!

My workaround for that is to Google search "App_Name IOS" on my Mac and get a fresh copy
of the App Store details which still has valid pricing... IAP's are listed near the bottom of the Specs section. You can also use "app sliced.co" and search for the app and get current app price and use the App Store icon for the app store page and IAP details.

Either way you can cut and paste the IAP pricing details and fix the formatting in a comment.

I appreciate that. I generally try to find positives even when I'm not into an app because I don't feel it's right to bash an app that I got for free. Most times, me not liking something doesn't mean that an app is worthless, it's just not for me. I choose my words carefully, but I really appreciate the feedback.

It certainly mellows out all the fast talking and intense energy...

Yes. I find that drinking helps me enjoy your videos more... but comprehension
goes down. Trade-offs. I just need to watch them more than once and re-fill.

  • It's the same trade off here - intensity goes out the window, as does the focus and clearly the production value too

  • Yes. But it gets that local bar feeling... just shooting the shit.

  • I love the intro warning ❤️❤️❤️

  • I can’t sleep. I’ll finish this video now.

  • OK. I made it to the end...

I'm going to start with Matrix and Chorder, right away and watch for sales on the rest.

Actually, I already picked up Matrix when it was on sale recently but got so many cool new toys I needed this video to get me over the hump.

I think I'll have something cookie' in 10 minutes on AUM and probably will use this a lot in lieu of my usual MIDI generators because it's so editable with that Piano Roll.

I just need to see how it reacts to MIDI from other sources like Piano Motifs, Riffer, Mozaic scripts, and external keyboards, PADs, etc.

I haven’t tried that yet either with LK. Is it possible with LK? I do live the way Atom has the “live record” midi in feature.

Honestly, that's truly what I go for with any video. Super casual, off the cuff as you would with friends having a couple drinks.

I can definitely see the Piano Roll as being one of it's biggest assets. The Imaginando team also said that the clip launcher is their ace-in-the-hole here, however that's not something I've ever used so I wouldn't know how to show that off

I find it thoroughly entertaining that this video has generated SO many comments and activity..... Keep it up!

  • Damn... that GUI is a little puzzle box of mysteries. But I got 3 tracks looping on 3 channels in AUM.

It's going to take a bit to unlock all it's power but it's clearly very powerful. Now I think I can watch the Imaginando videos and keep adding extra skills. I started there but there are so many videos I jumped in the middle and there wasn't any explanation for the very basic intro I needed. You bridged that gap with a few well placed clues.

    This perfectly summarizes my experience.

    You had me at "perfect"

  • @Daveypoo Thanks for the learn-it-as-we-go demo.. Appreciate the honesty.. 👍 This would probably be most 1st time user’s experience.. unless they already watched a bunch of Imaginando’s excellent demos..

LK has been a bit of a conundrum for me as well.. bought it a while back to actually use with Ableton.. that worked OK until touchAble Pro totally replaced that for me.. So, didn’t touch it for ages until recently + they’ve done a ton of updates + added features since I last opened it.. If you’re an Ableton user, the Matrix has a similar layout.. BUT until you know, things are still somewhat hidden (only so much screen real estate).. For me.. there’s a lot of tapping here, tapping there.. I suppose unavoidable because of the small screens we’re dealing with compared to desktop.. I imagine once you’ve got things setup, everything would flow.. and the more you use it, the easier it would get.. LK is a powerful app no doubt..

Here’s a super helpful tip.. makes getting around much quicker.. no need to drag the windows within.. simply single tap on either side of the hamburger handle to open + close fully.. works in every module..

  • Thanks for the tip @royor

It's nice to know I'm not the only one that finds this app a bit obfuscating...
