OT iZotope questions. Are they worth it? Bundle Sale for 49USD.
I saw an iZotope bundle for what appears to be a reasonable price and I’m wondering about thoughts from people that use them here. How important are they?
I am very new to desktop music making, as in I just got this M1 Mac Mini last week, got Logic, and I’m still slowly working through tutorials. I realize they may not work on M1 now, but I also have this 2012 Mini that can get Logic if I wanted to install it and it’s not yet on Big Sur/M1.
Here is the bundle https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/HolidayBun--izotope-holiday-bundle
This is available in the United States, I am not sure about other countries.
I am quite awful at the whole mixing and mastering thing, and that is why I am interested in these tools to get me started in a direction. I think I would not use half of these in the bundle, but the ones that appear to get you started in a direction for EQ, mixing, and mastering seem like they might be worth investing in.
I ain’t no dope, but I heard I need iZotope. This is the inquiry.
I’ve pretty much only been using iOS for music for the past several years. I had a brief amount of time using a Windows 7 laptop In 2012-14 to gig with for a while, but I really just selected presets and played live and not recording.
Thank you for any insight,
Daniel

FYI in case you missed it, the Ozone, Rx, Neutron, and Nectar here are Elements versions, i.e., basic versions. That said, Ozone assistant might help to suggest some setting if you are new. Could be useful to see what their "AI" thinks of your mix.
It's a good deal but it, or something very similar, will be back later. They regularly do these kinds of bundles. Don't worry about missing out.
What I'd suggest is don't buy anything until you know you need it.
Logic comes with so much (too much even) stuff you won't run out of things to learn for years. The built in plug-ins in Logic are excellent and extremely efficient; You can literally run thousands on your M1.
My advice would be to use all the native stuff first and learn how Logic's EQs and compressors behave before thinking about upgrading/replacing them. You don't need much more than a bit of EQ and a tiny bit of compression to mix a track. Adding loads of fx is what always makes things go south for me. I always need to reign things in. But learning Logic inside out first helps me do that.
Iris and Trash in the isotope bundle won't be much of an upgrade over what's built it; For trash, you can load up the guitar pedal boards and amp sims and get much nicer distortion. For Iris, I would always turn to Alchemy first too.
I can see the attraction of Ozone, but there are no shortcuts to mastering; Logic's built in limiter will ruin a mix just as easily as Ozone will :-D
I think you will get more out of learning about using Logic's busses so you can for example put all the drums on one bus, percussion on another, bass on another so you can balance the mix bit by bit and then if you need to bring down the drums, it's one fader (and you can put just a tiny touch of bus compression to help glue things together).
Use reverbs and delays on sends so you can turn down the fx with one fader (it's easy to overcook fx) and sending multiple instruments to one reverb helps make things sound cohesive.
Seriously though, there's not much you can't do with Logic alone; Some EQs such as the fabfilter stuff might be nicer to use sometimes, but you seriously would be very hard pushed to tell the difference in a mix. If you try and use too many plug-ins you'll end up chasing your tail. Learning the basics first is a much better use of time I think.
TLDR : I have most of the stuff in that Izotope bundle. I much prefer Logic's built in plug-ins. And less is more.
Plugin boutique frequently features several of these plugins as their free with any purchase plugins. I have received Ozone, Neutron, Nectar, Imager 2, Vinyl and Iris 2 all for free from these monthly giveaways, all since April. I would wait.
Thanks for the insight.
Really the main ones I’d be interested in are Ozone and Neutron. Most of the other’s especially Trash and the reverbs don’t really interest me, so maybe I should just look for sales on the two I actually might want to try.
I have an old version of RX Elements already it was like $10 but other than cleaning up some old recordings or bad recordings of a mini recorder at a bar or something, I haven’t had any use for RX.
True, then save up for the standard or advanced, the MPS version, upgrades. They have quite a few offers throughout the year.
I have ozone elements 9 and have found that I don’t really get superior results to the built in plugins. I don’t like the AI stuff ozone does.
Mixing and mastering aren’t easy. imho ozone elements doesn’t fix that.
The regular Iris 2 and BreakTweaker are on sale for $10 each
I used to just have my brother worry about mixing and mastering, but he is thousands of miles away and very busy usually. He likes to do that kind of thing. I really don’t like it, but it’s necessary. I usually just have a jumbled up mess of frequencies and just leave it.
Probably best to not go out buying a bunch of stuff though. I’m sure there will be sales later.
Ozone 9 Standard is currently less than half price. As a mastering idiot, I find this pretty useful. https://www.izotope.com/en/shop/ozone-9-standard.html
