I haven't heard either, but based on the woofer size I guess the JBL has more low end. The thing is you get only one for that price
Oh......good catch. So, with my budget I'm thinking the Presonus pair is probably the way to go. I don't have a serious studio, but I want to make basic recordings as well as amplify (for home use only) my instruments using amp modeler apps through a Motu M2 and can only get it to sound like it's supposed to through headphones.
That pair should be fine for that, yes? What is spending more money going to get me if I don't have a pro level room anyway?
Those Eris in 3.5" are not going to have much extension at all. The specs show 80 Hz, but doesn't say if that's -3 or -10 down. The JBLs are -3 at 49 Hz.
I have the older JBL 305s; that's a very popular monitor.
I have the older 305s, too. They are excellent.
I have eris 3.5, eris 5, and LSR 305mk1
If had to keep 1 pair it would the eris 5.
Fwiw.
Well, I just realized the Eris isn't a powered monitor, at least not the pair I linked to that is $99.
For a cheap starter pair the 3.5 eris are really nice. Low end isn't amazing but they are crisp. They are releasing a 8 inch sub really soon that is supposed to compliment them. They run $200. So you can have complete setup for $300.
I have those Presonus and my buddy were we record (pre Covid) as some M-audio BX8. What I learned is that unless you have some a properly treated room you are better of with a high end open back headphones.
I am using some Beyers Dynamics DT990 for mixing mastering. Also I bring my iPad in the car and plug it to my car stereo thru a 1/4 inch cable to adjust further more. Since my car stereo is the speakers I know best.
Sure they are.
Here’s a 4 speaker comparison. I’ve been eyeing up those little JBL’s.
I looked at this in-depth a few months back. The online consensus would be that the JBLs are (or maybe were) the standard in that pretty low price bracket. However a new kid on the block, Kali, was getting a lot of kudos too, started by a couple of ex JBL engineers who were getting sick of how JBL did things. I managed to pick a pair of their LP6s, but I've hardly had a chance to use them yet.
Note you mention the ris 3.5" against the JBL 5"... I was comparing the Eris 5" So there will be some differences there.
This was the review that ruled the Eris out for me, from a very detailed, techy review.
Conclusions
PreSonus nails the look and feel of the E5 XT. It has a higher end feel than many budget speakers. The waveguide is effective in providing even response side to side which is nice. The boosted lows and highs though seems to have been aimed at selling the speaker in a showroom. It does impress at first. And especially so if you don't compare it to another speaker, level matched. When you do that though, the shortcomings of the E5 XT come to surface with uneven tonality and tons of distortion from its bass driver.
The JBL LSR305P is going for just US $109 which is $50 cheaper than the E5 XT. It sounds hi-fi in the way that E5 XT simply doesn't. It lacks a bit of bass but I think you could boost its response there and maybe get the same thing as E5 has.
Overall, despite the online buzz that PreSonus E5 XT has, I cannot recommend it. I am here to guide you to proper sound and that calls for flat or flattish frequency response. You are not going to get that E5.

I had the jbl306pmkii and they were excellent, the 305 are also supposed to be excellent. I wound up trading with a friend for his Yamaha hs5’s at the end of the summer. The jbl were so smooth in the high end that I was getting fooled, and the Yamahas are irritating, so if it sounds pleasant on those then I know it’s sounding good. But that’s for mix translation, the jbl’s definitely sounded nicer and had a lot of detail and depth.
If you can get the 305’s for $200 for the pair though, I bet you will like them very much. I should have gotten the 305’s over the 306’s for my small space. One thing that is nice is that the jbl have a very wide sweet spot, the yamahas definitely do not, or at least not in my current setup. I’m about to install a new studio desk that I got from the producer I was assisting when he moved last week, so maybe that will help with the positioning. He also had the Yamaha, so that’s another reason I traded my jbl’s, that way I’d be doing any listening on the same speakers as him.
I have heard great things about the kali speakers, I didn’t realize they were former JBL people. I don’t have a doubt that Harman is gutting jbl. Happened with lots of brands.
I have the JBL 308's now for quite some time. I consider them one of my better all time purchases.
@SimonSomeone, 305s at SweetWater for $99 each.
I’ve had the first version of the JBLs for about 5 years. I think they’re great.
Never tried the JBLs but I use the Eris 3.5 and think they sound great. That’s my highly scientific opinion.
Just got the Presonus Eris Sub 8 today to go with my Eris 3.5s. 😳 Omg, got the whole place rattling. Great sound! Have to rethink my kicks and 808s. This makes it clear what sounds go together. Who knew how much adding a sub would change the game for me. I highly recommend this pair. For $300, you have great highs, solid mids and exceptional bass.
