Your favorite album of the calendar year 2020?

edited December 2020 in Other

Just checking in to see forum favorites and hopefully discover something good and new along the way. What was your favorite new album (non-reissue) released this year? Of course, the courtesy of posting a YouTube or Spotify link is very much encouraged. Even though I am posting three, I ask you to limit yours to one or two (ok, do 3 if you must, but I'm reporting you if you do more!)

TOPS-I Feel Alive

https://open.spotify.com/album/0aFqZJGOa5R2wETNRQPW8m?si=Pq3UUpw9T7uImaqvEGHhsw

Classic lite-FM/AM pop with an actual band. Killer female lead singer, excellent songwriting, some great synth flourishes and tasteful guitar playing. The title track "I Feel Alive" will make you feel good.

Kate NV-Room For The Moon

https://open.spotify.com/album/1GmdNCH9lvYzn0ZgtG8Mpa?si=3ve-jgzsTaeYcjV17d9S5g

Like listening to a robotic, Kraftwerk-influenced Russian Prince. LinnDrum abounds. Angular guitars and everything is held together (as it should be) by the bass. Another good female voice.

--

Magdalena Bay-A Little Rhythm And A Wicked Feeling

https://open.spotify.com/album/5OsXAPcYYYNTtkFuuB8TDc?si=BTl98i1EQnOAQkn9wRIN3Q

More girl pop, short and sweet. They've taken 80s elements (or as youth today would say, synthwave/retrowave) and bent them to their own will while embracing the good parts of modern production. A really pleasing album with a really good voice that's cute and vulnerable but at the same time very capable. It's quirky, but not Zooey Deschanel "quirky" (meaning it's not trying to be the way it is, that's just how it is).

  • Oh and honorable mention the new Kylie BUMPS and the bass is off the charts. Her best album by far since her first two albums in the late 80s.

  • I’m really enjoying Kruder & Dorfmeister’s 1995.

Also listened the shit out of Hebron Gate by Groundation (really old roots/dub reggae)

And I discovered State Azure this year

  • A Hero's Death Fontaines DC
    The Slow Rush Tame Impala
    A Written Testimony Jay Electronica

  • edited December 2020

It’s been the year of ambient for me, with a bit of techno.

    1. Inner Sphere by Voyage Futur
    2. Stasis Sounds for Long-Distance Space Travel by 36 and Zakè
    3. The Dirt on our Hands by Shifted

@brambos I didn’t know that Kruder and Dorfmeister were making music again. I must give that a listen.

They're not ;) They released unreleased tracks from 1995 and it really sounds like their stuff from 25 years ago. Sweet times if you have fond memories of The K&D Sessions.

    Oh I see.

Listening to it right now –bringing back fond memories of being 21 and incredibly high

  • Fond memories indeed, @brambos loved that kind of thing back then, along with similar vibes like DJ Cam, Kid Loco, Dimitri from Paris' first album etc

The K&D Sessions is one of my favourite albums from the 90s (and that's saying something, especially from an indie kid). When I first moved to London in 97 you would hear it playing in every trendy bar and cafe.

  • If you like prog, I’d recommend Masters of Illusion by Magenta.
The Red Planet is Rick Wakeman’s best album in years too.

  • discovered kate carr lately ...

  • Not sure about albums as I rarely make it through a whole one without trying to play something myself.

Things that have caught my ear lately (Yes I listen to Radio 6):

    Dry Cleaning - Lanyard Scratchcard.

Jane Weaver - The Revolution of Super Visions

    Nadine Shah - Trad

And because 2020 hasn't happened, a mention of Aldous Harding, the album was Designer , this song - Damn

  • Designer had some great tracks, she's quite unique

  • Not an album, but a great collection of material from one of my most favourite labels:

"Weight of the Planets" is the track that lured me in. A rare new release LP purchase over here. Had to check on the date of that one (2019) and also C.W. Stoneking's "Gon' Boogaloo" but it turns out that one was 2014! I guess it's fair to say I'm out of touch at this point. In a constant state of discovery, but it's almost always the older stuff in the crates at the back that I'm going through. This wardrobe is deep, and there's a magical land somewhere behind the coats, I'm pretty sure.

Anyway, as part of an ongoing correspondence, I send a friend of mine a song every day. Not albums, and I'm not declaring 'best of' anything but after a quick scan through, here are 3 singles from this year, released this year, that I was happy to hear (and I might easily have missed):

    Phoebe Rings - "Cheshire"

Psychedelic indie pop from New Zealand. The adorkable band photo really ties the whole thing together, but so do the harmonies and the time signature changes. They must be Stereolab fans!
    https://phoeberings.bandcamp.com/track/cheshire

Khruangbin & Leon Bridges - "Texas Sun"

Because sometimes, you just need a hug.

    The Chats - "AC/DC CD"

With all of the everything that's going on in the everywhere, this just came out. Like, 3 weeks ago. It made me so happy to know that despite 46 million acres of wildfire, The Great Plague, the great ozone hole and all of the deadly nature that they might run into (spiders, snakes, saltwater crocs and especially irukandji), the kids are alive and well in Australia (and they don't give a shit).

  • @colonel_mustard Arrgghh the annoyingly catchy song of the summer Texas Sun!

Enjoyed the exuberance of The Chats.

Haha, I think somebody takes the Mac mantle every year...

I'm enjoying this dry cleaning business :)

  • Ivan & Alyosha:

  • edited December 2020

Matt Berninger, the album is called Serpentine prison, and this track is called Distant Axis:

  • Remington Super 60: I don't Wanna Wait:

  • And Fruit Bats (one of my favourite bands) also released a great album, featuring this classic cover:

  • edited December 2020

    2020 has been...

    Jay Electronica "A Written Testimony"

    Dua Lipa "Future Nostalgia"

    Kaytranada "BUBBA"

Thundercat "It Is What It Is"

  • There’s some crackers here....most of them I haven’t heard before. Thanks for the introduction.

I’m undecided. Toss a coin time. It’s either The Definitive Collection by Shakin’ Stevens or Home Body by Dope Body. Um...

    :)

  • Maya - John Frusciante

A very competent interpretation / inspired take of mid 90's drum n' bass. And also an album honoring his recently passed cat .

This song really gives me the feelz.
