Anyone know of a good midi file player for AUM?

So I have all sorts of midi sequencers and generators, but what happens when I make a good midi file in Ableton, and I want to play that midi file on my synths in AUM? Is there an app for that?

Comments

  • I personally use Xequence, but not AU.

  • I am trying to use LK lately, but mainly used Xequence 2 before.
Since you use Abelton, you might benefit greatly using LK in Live session mode, rather than Midi mode.

I don’t use Abelton, so cannot elaborate further, but I suggest you investigate using LK on iOS with Abelton on computter.

Photon is the simplest app of the three. If I remember correctly each instance can load up to 6 midi files but only play 1 at a time. LK allows editing of notes and automation, and it's basically a midi clip launcher/launchpad. Can run multiple MIDI loops in parallel. Xequence 2 is basically a MIDI DAW and more suited to a more linear approach.

  • Just for the record:

"Musk MIDI File Player" supports 2 track MIDI's and has an AU feature. It supports file loading using the IOS "Share" menu.

"BS-16i" supports 16 tracks of MIDI using SF2 instruments like the classic General MIDI modules and sound cards. Like those hardware devices it adds mixing and some FX controls.
BS-16i calls the source midi file a "Song" and to get the midi into it you have to drop the file in the apps folder.

  • Stay tuned for the Atom update!

You can load and play midi files to each of its pads. So up to 6 midi separate midi files can play from one instance (each on its own channel if needed). On top of this each of the loaded pads can be manipulated dynamically without destroying the original material. Note: that this does NOT include note level editing.

  • Ok what is LK? I keep seeing the abbreviation but have literally never seen anyone spell it out.

In the Store it's called "lk - for ableton live & midi". There are many tutorial videos by the developer, Imaginando, and others. It started as an attempt to make the IOS screen a control surface for Ableton like the Ableton Push hardware unit.

But with the ability to Record/Playback MIDI it becomes a nice addition to an AUM workflow.
It has 1 crucial IAP called the Matrix to record/playback MIDI.

6 IAP's an all and the app itself if free with some useful test features before purchase:

    1. Matrix (MIDI/Loop triggers with channels and scenes)
    2. Keyboard
    3. PADS
    4. MIDI CC/knob surface
    5. Chorder (with Arp)
    6. X/Y Pad
  • I think it might be short for Live Kontrol, as it's an Ableton Live controller as well.

That’s what it is named. Not abbreviated.
Type LK in AppStore search to find it and check out the details.
    It’s pretty awesome, I say.

I was just about to suggest Atom too

What does LK do when you import a multichannel or multitrack MIDI file into a clip.

    Does it retain the multichannel?

  • You can only set a channel per track so I guess it will lose the channel information. Would love to hear that I'm wrong though ;)

I've been importing the "Piano Motifs" outputs which have channels 1+2. It merges
both channels into one on the configured output channel.

I'm asking @azul3D_Apps, the developer of "Piano Motifs" to offer me a setting that will
generate 2 MIDI outputs for the 2 channels so I can spread multiple "Piano Motifs"
variations based upon a common chord progression. @azul3D_Apps has been very responsive to user requests so it might address my issue. The other option is to add a step involving Cubasis or Xequence 2 to split the channels.

Both channels merged still sounds pretty good in LK but it would be a big ask for them to
spread MIDI channels across multiple channels in their app by default. They expect small
MIDI loops in the 1,2,4,8 bar world like most Ableton users are working from.

I'd like 32 bar song forms with the verse, bridge, chorus concepts for my musical style and
lk is close to accommodating that.

But the new Atom 2 might win the day.

lk's Chorder IAP with the arpeggiator function is something I have yet to explore. But
it also looks promising. The MIDI control IAP might com in handy to play with AUM Parameters. Anyway, while on sale I loaded up lk with all 6 IAP's because it adds features
into AUM I can't get elsewhere except by leaving AUM for the amazing Xequence 2 and maybe slipping AudioBus 3 into the stack for ease of window switching: the Hyper-DAW.

Can't wait to see how Atom 2 handles the 2 track Piano Motifs MIDI files.

  • Can LK receive midi from Ableton on my laptop via bluetooth?

Photon Au seems to do what I want. I got that and playing my midi files in AUM like I wanted. Only problem is, I want to sync this midi playback to the audio I used to create it. And right now photon doesn't play the midi file from the start when I press play in AUM. It just goes on it's own. Is there any way to slave the playback in photon to timeline in AUM?

    No.
I split those up in Xequence 2 first, then export each clip as an individual, single-channel midi file.

Wow, yesterday I was thinking the same. Actually I was looking for a player that could handle GM files
