Looking for a non-diatonic chord progression builder

Does an app exist that helps guide you through selecting diatonic and non-diatonic chords (chords in parallel keys, secondary dominants, etc.)

  • I have Suggester and it’s ace. It sounds like what you’ve described.

  • edited December 2020

Tonality, TONALY, Suggestr, Navichord, Firo4 are the ones I have and used.

    My personal favorite are:
    1. TONALY (love the UI - I can make songs quickly with this),
    2. Tonality ( the developer is amazing, and it is PACKED with features),
    3. Firo4 (great for live looping chord progression - still thankful for this app as it's made MIDI live looping a joy)

    Firo4-CE is free to use.

  • I use Tonaly for this all the time. It's great for modes and/or borrowed chords.

  • Mapping Tonal Harmony Pro Probably complete overkill for what you’re after BUT super powerful app to be aware of..

Tonality’s Chord Pads - Factory preset -Scale Chords (option to include secondary dominants)

    ChordPadX

  • Suggester

  • Thanks for all the suggestions. I do have a few of those (Suggester, Mapping Tonal Harmony (still trying to wrap my head around that), Tonaly , and Tonality, but I guess I never dug deep enough to discover that functionality. I'll revisit them and look at the others (Firo4 and ChordpadX ) to see which one resonates with me.

  • Tonaly is good, but Suggester is more flexible in the types of chords it offers and how you can define them. If your music theory is good then Suggester is probably a better option, but if you're looking for guidance then Tonaly is very nice.

Mapping Tonal Harmony Pro is a tool that I find baffling despite having really good Jazz harmony knowledge. Maybe I'm missing something.

  • Thanks @cian. My theory is decent, but I'll test both out to see what they offer.

  • For noodling around and trying different progressions try using ChordMaps2. Doug @thesoundtestroom has done a vid on it. Non AU, however if your working out progressions routing it’s midi into AUM and to a midi recorder should be more than viable. Super powerful and expressive.

  • @audiblevideo - yes, I have that one too, but I overlooked that. I've been out of iOS music apps for a while and trying to stick to learning the guitar, so I'm a bit rusty on many of the apps I own. That is a nice tool.

  • Just realized that Suggester + ChordPadX are made by the same dev.. Mathieu Routhier..

@funjunkie27 Yes, always need to find the chord app that works for you + your workflow.. I’m glad I have a few of them to choose from.. I don’t use one exclusively.. depends on what you’re trying to accomplish.. even now, I suggested ChordPadX and realized I haven’t unlocked it yet.. why? Seems perfect for using inside AUM as a chord pad (trigger).. so, I’ll end up unlocking it when I top up some funds after the crazy Black Friday sales.. (ouch!) 🤪

Mapping Tonal Harmony Pro is D-E-E-P.. it’s been updated very recently with even cooler features.. Have you checked out some of their tutorials on YouTube? They continue to add new ones almost every week.. might be worth watching a few to get re-familiar with it..

    Happy hunting.. 😁

  • I probably have tried every chord progression builder and find them useful for sketching out ideas to build on; especially ones with their own timelines like Suggester, Navichord and Chordbud.

But one thing I’ve wondered is why can’t there be a way to use these as midi filters so that rather than just sending out chords to use, say, in an arp, you could play midi notes through them and be “chord quantized” as you play?

There are scale filters like Rozeta Scaler and some Mosaic scripts but I don’t see how you could sequence the changes inside of that to follow a timeline. For example, four bars of C mixlolydian then 2 bars of F Aeolian, and so on, following a timeline as you play through it.

So is it just not possible? Or does no one else see a use for this?

@royor since you’ve just (re)discovered the Suggester ChordPadX combo, did you know you can drag Suggester chords onto ChordPadX to fill the pads. Build up you progression in Suggester and perform it in ChordPadX. FYI ChordPadX does have all the chord Suggester has within its own interface, but no way to “sequence” them like Suggester. Flexible pair.

  • @royor - thanks for the link for MDecks. Hopefully that'll help demystify the beast!

@Stochastically - not a bad idea, if possible. I never found the time to learn Mozaic, so maybe someone can take that and run.

I probably should. I just find the map mystifying. Also, there's only so much time in the day so priorities...

It seems like it should be a great tool for reharmonization though.

  • For the filter idea you could write a script that takes chords on one channel and notes on a different channel. That way your chord tool (suggester/Tonality/whatever) could drive it. There may even be a script that supports this. If I had time I would write one, but alas.

  • Oh one thing I like about Suggester, and I don't know that any of the other chord apps do this (feel free to correct me) is that it has great support for inversions, different voicings, etc.

Dammit. Now I'm going to have to investigate that app.

  • Like others, tried to work with Mapping Tonal Harmony Pro, got frustrated with UI, and even after hearing about the update, can't find the motivation to try the update version.

I just got a Moog Matriarch so I'm more motivated to level up my keyboard playing and pick up new harmonic ideas the old school way - by playing them. With that in mind, I picked some instructionals from Gospel Musicians on Black Friday sale like the Neo Soul Fundamentals one.

I have wondered the same and experimented with similar apps . Thanks to COVID lockdown I spent the best part of 9 months building a suite of Mozaic scripts to do something like this.

I'd be interested to know which ones. Are they listed on patchstorage?

  • @Stochastically Current status is: Built, Somewhat tested, Not currently shared.
I'm kind of itching to do a "show-n-tell" because it has been an epic mission and I am almost there.... i hope!
I just saw your post and it resonated with me and my comment slipped out.
