Daw that can quick preview midi files?

edited December 2020 in App Tips and Tricks

I just purchased a mega pack of midi drum files and I’m wondering if there is an ios DAW that lets me go through the list and preview the files before importing them. I use the acoustic drum kit from Beathawk as my sound source. So instead of going back and forth from the daw to say a external midi player app, I ‘m looking for an ios DAW that lets me preview the midi files. This would make song writing much faster.

Edit: can Drumperfect pro open and audition user midi files?

    AudioShare is your friend.
Seriously. It can play MIDI. Saves me a lot of time in going through MIDI.

Edit: Got ahead of myself. I’m not too sure about drums. AudioShare would probably convert it to melody.

I believe Cubasis can do this. If you open the files app, you can place all the MIDI there. Same with NanoStudio 2. Those are the two that come to mind.

  • @seonnthaproducer, thank you. I’ve tried Cubasis and NS2. They both allow you to import midi files, but don’t let you audition them.

@tja: great, thanks! This is a great workaround.

  • I also have high hopes for Drumsession, but at the moment there is a bug which prevents auditioning imported midi files and dragging them onto the time line. I’ve contacted the dev and he’s going to look into it.

  • @tja - Thanks for the tip.

@Maarten - Great post. Got a few cool tricks from it.

  • @Maarten I've only seen this feature in desktop DAWs so far.

Thinking about it (and it would make sense for my own MIDI files library), I might batch convert all MIDI files to low-quality, small size and mono mp4 audio (around 32..48k) and load them all into AudioShare for a much more musical preview.
This is also the only chance to pick the correct drum and percussion layouts for previewing as there are just too many 'de facto standards' in drum mapping besides GM.
AudioShare will only play MIDI as sinewaves triggered by notes and that's not worth much with drum/percussion or multitrack files, hence this workaround.

Yes, DrumPerfect Pro easily import midi files. It can instantly extract the drums part and display it as a song composed of multiples patterns, which can be tweaked to improve their feel, dynamics, probability, bpm, etc...

The free GM pack has a kit specially designed for midi files.

Using DPP Midi out in Audiobus Midi Input, it is easy to play the tracks using BeatHawk drum kit as reference.

Once the midi files haves been converted to DPP format, it is easy to browse and audition them in the pattern or song library.

  • @Gilbert Preview or import only? We're not short of import options.

    Both. (Preview and Import )
Like many other unusual features, it is not documented but users can easily Preview Midi files in DPP.
You can have hundreds of midi files ( both drums only or full band ) and preview them ( looped ) one after the other. ( Tip: use the Search function to target selected files )

Here is the way to do it:

1- copy or move your midi file collection to "On My iPad/DrumPerfect Pro/songs" folder.
    2- then follow these steps:
make sure you have loaded a GM mapped drum kit.
    press "Audition" then "Load (song)"
    "show midi files"
check the midi channel ( usually 10 or 1 )
preview each file ( notes not mapped to the kit are shown in the message box )

    3- happy midi preview!
