[OT] Anybody else have trouble letting product packaging go?

I seem to have a thing for product packaging, boxes slip cases etc. I have every box for every Apple product I’ve ever purchased, a box for every Novation product I’ve purchased and the list goes on. Some of them are used for storing cables and some of them I really need to get rid of. Does anyone else have this problem?

    Haha.

    Guilty.

I’ve actually combined all of mine against the far wall and turned it into a performance platform. By which I mean a good portion of my gear is laid out on top of this and it’s perfect for hooking up gear with the IPad and controllers. I love it. Guess I should add a photo here tomorrow.

Took a few years for them all to become useful though. :)

  • Pics please!

  • I do this with even non music gear lol. Still have my current coffee pot package and ny old coffee pot package. Eventually I throw some away but some are still in a pantry or closet somewhere in my house or my brother’s house. But yeah I keep all my music gear’s packaging always.

  • I hold onto it for a short while and then get rid of it, quite frequently. My Apple products I have all the boxes for, except my 2nd gen pro.

I used to use my Novation BS2 box as a carrying case, until it got pretty beat up due to gigging. All my Novation Launchcontrol regular and XL I use it for a box when it’s not in use. I’m pretty sure I still have my Circuit box, though I’m guessing in storage.

I’m holding on to my Behringer Neutron box as it definitely needs a safe place if moving (hopefully we are buying a house), and also I’m debating just selling it, as I think modular is not for me. I feel fancy just getting some PWM on a square and don’t want to go further with patch cables. I haven’t given up yet.

  • Yep, same here. Felt like it was always unnecessary until I moved recently.
You know what? Turns out I’m a genius.

  • I have about 5000 CDs and I threw the jewel cases out for every one and trimmed the inserts so they would fit into big CD wallets. They are now completely zero in sale value and I am stuck with them. I will bequeath them to my children.

I tried to keep the boxes to my ATC monitors because I knew I would have to sell them if I landed on hard times. My boys found the boxes and cut castle turrets into them and used them as a Playmobil set.

  • @Crawlingwind There is one radically niche value in the practice mentioned and that is outlasting the "out of fashion" phase of a physical item's lifespan and entering the Top Dollar Paid For Preserved Vintage phase.

It doesn't happen with most Things and takes some decades but now when one sees an original TB-303 WITH the silver plastic carrying case (for example) it's like witnessing the Vietnamese Paphiopedilum orchid.

  • I save a lot of mine on the basis that when I want to sell stuff it sometimes can increase the price if you have original packaging...not that I can ever bear to part with anything....😉

This is it - when you are selling pre owned if it has the original box, transport inserts, power supply and manual then you get a lot more interest and a good bit more cash if it’s an auction.
I usually look all these things when I’m buying myself. It suggests that the item is likely to have been looked after to me.

  • The problem is I never sell anything.

Are you needing the space your boxes are taking up for something else? Can you see out of the window from your armchair?
I could send my wife round for a visit. You wouldn’t have them for long then.

  • Even though I put stickers on my Model Cycles and took a sharpie to it I still have the box. Not sure why yet, obviously won’t be selling it lol.. so I hear this.
