Writing songs on Apple Watch + iPad

Hello folks. Just wanted to share this video where I show how I use an Apple Watch and my iPad to start songs off. In the video I’m using Cubasis 2, Zeeon, Mood Units and Korg Module. Just thought it might be of interest to any song writers out there.

  • @JackRubinacci great job! Thank you for sharing your creative process. I’m personally smarter from your video. Your process reminds me of Timbaland’s writing process.

Thank you man . I really appreciate that . Glad you found interesting 🙏

  • What a great video! It's great to see more discussion around songwriting and composing.

I also sometimes use a very similar process, but with my phone and a guitar rather than the watch and a keyboard. A melody might pop into my head when I'm out for a walk, and I record that into Audioshare on my phone. Then if I like the melody I'll sit down with a guitar and just strum random chords until I find some that fit.

I think the dictaphone approach also works if you use a music first process (ie create a vocal melody over existing music). In that situation I record as many different melodies as I can come up with and then try to just use the best ones. It's a great way of creating varied and flowing verses and choruses.

I'm hoping to get an Apple watch for my next birthday (in January), can't wait :)

Thanks for sharing. I really like the fact that the vocal melody you ad-libbed was actually really good, with some interesting intervals. You should definitely take that one further.

Thank you Richard I appreciate that . Yes I think it’s really interesting to write away from an instrument. I think you sometimes get melodies that you wouldn’t necessarily get to if you were tied to an instrument. It’s not the only way of course but then again with song writing it’s what ever works 😁

I think you would enjoy an Apple Watch . Not only for voice memos but you also track how many kilometers you’ve walked while out thinking about songs.. that’s what I do at least 😁

  • I was also recently gifted a Watch, after honestly being rather uninterested in the technology for the most part... And yeah, now that I have it I find it surprisingly useful. The mic is good quality for sure, great suggestion to use Voice Memos for song ideas.

Yes it’s very useful . I never used to use a watch until I got this one . But it’s really handy

I think both approaches can work well. One benefit of writing away from the instrument is that when you come to figure out a chord progression to fit with the melody, you can end up using less formulaic progressions since you have to find chords that hamronise with the melody itself.

On the other hand, one reason I've been doing the music first lately is so that I can deliberately use modes (myxolydian and lydian mostly), which is another way to spice up the chord progressions and can also lead to interesting melodies.

As for walking, I have a dog so I walk every day. The phone already tracks my mileage, but maybe the watch is more accurate? The main reason I want the watch actually is so I can control my music without having to pull the phone out of my pocket when I'm on a walk.

Thanks Jack, enjoyed your video. Any other apps on the apple watch that you’ve found helpful for music-making ?

Hello . The only other app that I use in terms of music is the db counter to make sure I’m not exposing myself to too much noise . It’s actually very accurate and another very useful thing to have

Yes you are Richard. Sometimes chords and scales can help create really unusual melodies too.

I walk my little Maltese terrier too although being as big as a hamburger he doesn’t need much walking 😁

  • Mine is a working cocker spaniel. She needs a couple of hours every day, and even then she struggles. The joke is that if you have a working dog then no-one else can get any work done...

    😁excellent

  • I'm looking forward to making music with Apple glasses.

Love this! Never came up with any real use for the watch beyond notifications and activity tracking, but this seems really useful. Kind of annoyed because I can think of times when I would’ve wanted to record something but my phone wasn’t on me and it never even occurred to me that the watch could do it.

Hi Mathew . Thanks for the comment. Yes that’s why it’s so useful cause it’s a dictaphone on your arm . A dream come true for someone like me

  • Hey Jack, you’re a welcome addition. Very entertaining, lol. So you opened for Lionel Ritchie? Well, nuff said. Keep it coming, bro.
