‘Indie’ vs ‘corporate’ developers
I have seen references to ‘indie’ vs ‘corporate’ developers recently and I am curious how the definition is arrived at, Is it number of staff? If they sell hardware as well? Desktop as well as iOS? Annual sales? Acquisition by a bigger company? Can an indie developer become corporate and vice versa?
Comments
Lots of ways to define this. In the game world, it is usually a reference to if the game is developed by a studio or someone outside that sort of publishing structure. For me, if a place has paid employees, they aren't indie anymore.
Apple started out as an indie, now they are considered by many to be the "biggest" company in the world.
For a developer the main aspect of being „employed“ versus operating „indie“ is passing all his/her intellectual property (concerning the job/project) to the employer.
This is compensated by (hopefully) reliable and adequate payment.
It’s a deal... but you have to figure out your personal situation carefully and of course this may be subject to negotiations.
The more talented a person is, the more options exist and companies may offer additional compensation. After all there‘s few doubt about the advantage of highly motivated teams.
Bottomline: the border between both forms is almost fluent today, sections of a company may well operate just like indie teams, but under the corporate umbrella.
While you can do full (demanding) applications as a one person show in IOS, don‘t even think about the same attempt in (Windows) corporate business environments.
The complexity isn‘t manageable by individuals any more - a team is a must-have.
This also applies to any complex task (f.e. networked games), too, so the term „business“ above is kind of a synonym.
I suspect it‘s not that dramatic in MacOS (magnitudes more lean than Windoze imho), but I lack hands-on experience in that domain.
But at least I can read and understand Apple‘s software documentation(s), while I fail to recognize any common sense in Windoze completely.
I use the terms loosely.
The same idea as Indie vs. Corporate musicians.
Most of the time the determination is easy, but also many times the distinction gets blurred.
Staff on the payroll. I’m good with that.
Now how to find out? I need to make sure that no sneaky corporates put a red beret on and try to masquerade as a hip indie...
