Go-to Hip Hop/Boombap/Lofi Bass Preset
Curious to know your favorite bass preset(s) for Classic Boombap Hip Hop/Lofi that you use consistently as a starting point to tweak. Bonus points if it exists in Bass 808, Bassalicious, Sampletank, PSP, Model D, Zeeon, Layr, Poison, BS16i, Synthmaster one, DRC, OBx, TF8, D1 or Troublemaker. Been using a lot of 808 samples in my experiments with Trap and Drill, but classic hip hop is my first love and I’m always curious about the preferences of this community.

I’m a boom bap guy. My go to for the longest was actually the electric bass’s in Garageband; “Liverpool” is a favorite, and “Mute” too.
Also any realistic “acoustic” or “stand up” for those old Native Tongue/older gang Starr/Eric B. & Rakim kind of joints (I like to really lo pass filter these, or pretty much any bass that has too much, like, “string” action, if you get what I mean, and it helps too on more “faker” sounding basses. But I lo pass filter pretty much all bass I use honestly).
Another technique I’ve liked doing is combining bass with piano on the lower keys playing the same notes as the bass. (Again lo pass is my best friend and helps glue the two instrument tones together).
There’s people who play bass in Endlesss as well, and I’ve made use of a bunch of layers they’ve left in the Royalty-Free Hip-Hop Beats Jam
(https://endlesss.fm/band/302d1dd2f42d749f8b5abc77005ab784864060ba3be6ba1393a417a5fc2cd920/join ), either as is or sampling/chopping/re-playing.
There's a preset for Moog Model D called Bass 145 which will give you a good starting point for a hip-hop bass
Oh, and sometimes taking regular guitar presets or ones like “nylon guitar” or whatever and playing them at really low notes can sound really good as bass too (and—you might see this coming—lo passing them)
BM2 has got some good stock basses - cant remember if theyre in BM3, aslo Thumbjam for acoustic and electric bass. Also secrete top tip - try riffer running bassaliscous - i'll post a video if you dont have riffer
Man just running thru some of that model D and forgot how tight that app is sound wise. good call @drewinnit
The heads come out at night, the heads come out at niiiiiiggghhhhtttt! Thanks for the looks. @pandan thanks for the tips, I’ll check GB. I use the low end theory on multi-Instrument samples to filter out bass tracks. I do have some good samples one shots that I filter as well, I’ll check your link and also try the piano layer method. @drewinnit i’ll def mess with the 145 patch thanks. @Jose_Bee I have thumbjam so will def take a run at that. Unfortunately, No Riffer. After Black Friday run and Mixbox wifey would wreck me if I bought another app. Still curious to check the video though.
Ak 808.
@Poppadocrock ive used the upright bass on bass 808, that’s a good one. AK get a lot of hate, but this app is pretty nice.
There’s a stand-up bass preset in Bass 808 that I really like. I up the release a bit.
@DukeWonder word, i like that one too. Recently used it in a track with release all the way up. Is there a way to get the notes to choke themselves when you do this in Bass 808? I was shooting for a happy medium of letting the notes ring long enough and not letting them step/bleed on each other. Would be convenient if they could choke each other like sampled basses in BM3 put in a choke group.
Here’s a few model d patches I’ve thrown together that I like. I honestly usually use bass samples for hip hop though. Viking is a good one as well synth wise. Anyway here’s those patches https://www.dropbox.com/s/yijikn237tnw88r/USER.mdb?dl=0
@Fingolfinzzz good lookin, much appreciated.
It’s mono so it should be choking itself. Otherwise you couldn’t do 808 slides. You might have a reverb or something on it that is causing bleed. The instrument will choke itself so it might be something with the channel overall.
@DukeWonder thanks, i don’t usually put reverb on my bass, but who knows? I’ve been resisting mixing in solo so it may even be the low end of another instrument that’s tricking my ears. I think I should apply some moderation to not solo’ing my tracks for cases like this where it makes sense.
They do, not be me, although i understand some of it, I wish their AUv3 synths performed better and AK synth one was AU, but yes the AK 808 is a great app for hip hop, lofi, trap Bass. I usually do some tweaking to get the sound I want, but this is probably my favorite AK app, and a great Bass app in general. You can change enough parameters to get some great sounds.
Thanks for these, 7 great sounds. Cheers.
@Poppadocrock any idea why Bass 808 would be muting random notes on my piano roll in BM3? I was using an 808 sample as a placeholder for my bass. Opened new bank, chose Bass 808 as plugin and copied the pattern to Bass 808 bank using upright bass. Sounds great but now it’s muting a couple notes in the pattern. If I move that note up a semitone in the piano roll and let it play through once and then move it back down to correct note, it will play for a couple of passes and then mute again, weird!
Ditto!
I also have a fat sounding Dilla preset for Model D I learned how to program. I attached it below. Here is the article if you want to play with the settings: https://youtubemusicsucks.com/how-to-wield-the-mini-moog-voyager-like-j-dilla/
@Stuntman_mike thanks my dude, can’t go wrong with JayDee ever.
That’s what’s up! #Dilla4Ever
I feel like I should open more threads like this. There are a lot of EDM/IDM/Ambient producers on here who have been so helpful and have opened my eyes to so many different options I would have never explored in my bubble. As a result, I’ve started implementing techniques that aren’t necessarily used in hip hop and my music is better for it. I’ve also gained a bunch from the guitarists and other instrumentalists that contribute regularly to the forum. I would be lying though if I said it doesn’t feel good to find like-minded heads in the mix. Good to know we out here.

First song produced and recorded entirely on iOS by my collective: rotating band of misfits that rotate in and out. Second track (with bass I’m researching on this thread) coming soon.
Heres a quick vid of me messing around with Riffer
I’m with you man. Being around these kinda forums and the advanced ios tips and tricks kinda folks has expanded me and gotten me into new apps so much that I almost forgot just how simple some of the most classic boom bap joints really are and how effective it is even without all the bells and whistles I stress myself out trying to master on these devices sometimes (and yeah, I’m pretty much all ios/ipads these days).
And because the app wizards sometimes do kinda have to be wizards to master their genre, a lot of them are in much more tech or electronic-based (and tech sounding) genres. And we learn a lot from them, but I’m with you, it’s always nice to hear folks who swim around in the more classic hip-hop pools, and to hear their music too, cuz sometimes you need to get some more slow cooked funk and slop in the stew.
Word up and nice work! Just followed. (I’m buku panda on soundcloud)
In BASSalicious2 some nice ones are 101 Tape BASSed, Classic RnB, and Classic RnB 2.
Really though, a thick sine wave oscillator with a good low pass filter is always a fine place to start.
For acoustic bass I got a Gold Tone fretless microbass, it sounds a lot like an upright but it’s the size of small guitar.
@Pandan Word, thanks, I’ll check it. @3sleeves thanks for the suggestions, that microbass sounds sick!
@king_picadillo Right on, thanks for starting this thread!
