(probably the last to know, right, but they were new to me!)...so anyway: I made this -

And in a break with my usual tradition, no auto generators were harmed in the making of this production. Everything grew out of a half dozen notes I actually, like played, y'know, on a keyboard and everything, into Atom. Jonesing for Atom 2 baaaad now.

  • Sweet. Very atmospheric.

  • @Poppadocrock : hey, thanks! :) Glad you liked it.

  • Good crackling and cthonic, for sure. Have you acquired MixBox?

  • @LinearLineman : nope, the crackling came from a VST I got for free called Vinyl https://www.izotope.com/en/learn/vinyl.html - which I added during mastering in Ableton. I know there are equivalent IPad apps, e.g. from Klevgrand https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/daw-lp/id1391494450 - but free beats everything. :) The use of it here was an experiment - I deliberately dialled it up high, to make it almost part of an off kilter rhythm, but the VST offers a lot of flexibility over elements of the sound, I might try something a little more subtle next time. I’m a big fan of wobbly, dusty, telephonic sounds. Next stop: the wax cylinder mix ;)

  • @Svetlovska, Electric vintage will do it on iOS, as well as Phonograph in MixBox. Not free, but on the iPad.

  • @LinearLineman : wow! Just checked MixBox. I thought the Klevgrand app was dear. At £40 MixBox ihalf price intro price is... well, let’s just say that’s pretty rich for my blood.

It sounds like you really like it, though and you are clearly getting a lot of bang for the buck, on a pound per effect basis, but... I blew my entire significant discretionary spending budget through til April (yes, I did the maths) during Black Friday, chiefly on an Akai Force Pro which I am now trying to learn, so I’ll have to pass.

I suspect proper musicians such as yourself would get more out of MixBox than me anyway, as these fx seem in the main to be quality reproductions of the actual kit you would want to use to record proper instruments properly, whereas I’m all about twisting the hell out of a sample loop until it cries like the tortured souls of a thousand dead screaming in remorse for sins they can never be absolved of, where a little click or hum is all part of the fun. In such conditions, absolute fidelity is owed to the Dark Gods of the Beneath, not the soft knee on compressor number 3 ;) Thanks anyway for the heads up, I’ll certainly put it in that box alongside the FabFilter apps as ‘like to haves’ come that lottery win.

@espiegel123 @Tamir_Raz_Mataz : thanks both for the listens :) But... ‘nice’... ? Obviously, I really have to brush up my sulphurous glares and muttered invocations! After all, I have my Dark Ambience to think of... ;)

Brush up or just surrender. it’s a pleasant dark. Like the cyanide flavor in a peach.
