Why are new AU3 plugins not showing up in GarageBand?
In the last week I received two reports from customers about two different plugins that they couldn’t find in the list of plugins in GarageBand after installing.
I couldn’t replicate the problem on my own iPad and the customers said they can’t see the plugin even after rebooting, deleting, and reissued.
Has anyone else seen this problem?
Any idea what causes it?

Anyone?
Some random thoughts:
I have the Bug: can’t find the new install plugin. I must reboot and everything is ok.
all plugins away? I have this since iOS 13/14 from time to time. Annoying af but with a restart they come back
Thank you.
Me too. But lately (since iOS 14) I am getting reports from customers who simply can’t get it to show up no matter what they do. I’m not ruling out the possibility that I am doing something wrong in my plugins but that seems unlikely since these plugins worked for years without a problem and only since iOS 14 we started getting complaints.
I would like to refer the customers to Apple support but I have no idea how to replicate the bug. I guess it’s still appropriate to refer them to apple.
I've been working with iOS AUv3's on macOS for the past couple of days. So, I've been using auval to check the iOS AU's conformance. The problem is that auval seems to not be reliable. Sometimes, it can't find the installed AU's. Sometimes it reports and tests channel configurations that the AU doesn't configure. It will then test these configurations and reject the AU. Sometimes, it'll report the right channel capabilities and then test the wrong ones anyway and fail the AU. I'm wondering if it is caching information and the cache isn't being cleared and then updated correctly.
This feels similar to what is happening to AU's under iOS 14. It makes me wonder if they've started using auval under the hood on iOS.
It's not just iOS/iPadOS it seems. Even the new version of Logic Pro is pretty darn picky on what AUv3's it decides to show...
...and it's now almost a de-facto standard procedure to reboot the Mac after installing a plug-in before it can be 'seen'.
I heard back from one of the customers who reported this problem. The issue turned out to be that he was looking for an effect by pressing the “audio unit” button in GarageBand on the main screen where you select the instrument for a new track. That button shows instruments, not effects. I wonder if the other customer who reported this wasn’t also simply confused by the user interface.
iOS 14 seems to be problematic in this way... which is why many of us have shied away from upgrading. Too many people reporting that plugins stop showing up.
It seems very likely, if it was an AU effect type plugin that they couldn’t find.
So it’s iPad 14 or later? Would Cubasis 3 fare any better?
Why are you asking about an issue more than 4 years old 🤪? And no, iOS 14 was mentioned, not iPad 14.
Win; Obviously I looked in up in “search”.. Is it still an issue today?
Another long, long dead thread resurrected… LOL. For crying out loud.
Well, people often get grief for asking about things without having searched the forum first before creating a thread. So I can see how it happens.
Would be nice if threads with no interactions longer than 2-3 years would automatically lock.
In all fairness, AUs not showing up in GarageBand until a restart is still happening to this day , several IOS updates later . It’s an easy fix (restarting device) but annoying
Also… to play devil’s advocate, I’ve been chastised for asking a question in a new thread that was last brought up in an old post. So it’s a damned if you do, damned if you don’t situation .
The reason I commented was I thought that it was a long-gone issue as I (almost) never hear of it any more, and the main problem was all AU's not appearing and in any host, not just Garageband. Apparently it's still an issue though.
Some AU's need to have their standalone app started at least once or strange things happen. I don't know if that's related or not.
(btw, my question was an honest one, not a rebuke. I was after clarification of the reason you were asking, but I phrased it poorly.)
I am unaware of AUv3 not showing up particularly in GB.
There is a long-standing bug that sometimes an AUv3 won’t appear after being downloaded till after reboot. When this happens, it isn’t available in any host. It is random and can happen with any AU. For this bug only reboot solves it. Launching the standalone does not solve it.
@Fear2Stop and @wim :Dodnt know the fox was that easy . Thanks
Another very, very useless, unhelpful comment... LOL. For crying out loud.
I mean, if you don't like it when someone with a similar question brings up an old thread rather than starts a new conversation, the best course of action is to shut your mouth and move onto a different thread. Is that so hard?
@jwmmakerofmusic : xAct!!!
What's up, man? We're all friends here. Why the rude comment?
Even friends can argue, mate. I'm sorry I was rude with saying "shut your mouth" (I woke up in a bit of a nark this morning on account of rising too early), but my original point of not answering an old thread with a condescending comment still stands. I'm just wondering what the purpose of saying "For crying out loud, another long dead thread resurrected" was about. Old threads can often help others who are more recent to the forum learn something new and useful afterall, even if the advice is the standard "restart your iPhone/iPad and it should be good". 😊
I don't mind if you have a contrary opinion, it's your right to voice it or not voice it. But we have interacted here long enough and have enough respect for each other that I think we can move beyond attacking the person and instead respectfully disagree on occasion. It's OK to disagree. 👍
That's fair then. Again, I'm sorry for being rude.
We're good!
Cheers mate. 🍻
