4Pockets AUM Midi Mixer - First Impression Walkthrough (winners announced)

4Pockets AUM Midi Mixer - First Impression Walkthrough (3 FREE Copies to Give Away!)

4Pockets AUM Midi Mixer has a lot of potential and will make it much more interesting to do jams in AUM. Bet of all it is universal, so works on iPhones as well as iPads. This is a very quick first look as I have had very limited time with the app, but will teach you all the main features. For sure you will see me using this more in future videos as AUM is my main host. Please feel free to comment on the youtube vid if you think there are features that could easily be added to this to make it even more useful, cheers folks.

As usual, details of how to win a free copy are in the pinned youtube comment at the top of the comments section. Even if you don’t want to win, I’d really appreciate you giving this a like etc if you find it useful!

  • Gonna watch when I get home!

  • Nice quick walkthrough, thanks 😊 👍

  • Good video @Gavinski Short and Sweet. I recognize the timber of that app that shall not be named that has not been released yet......... I think 😂.

  • Say nothing, I don't want another Drum Computer style sleuthing saga 😂

  • Honestly after watching the video I'm more interested in the apps used to create the audio-files rather that app that the video focuses on :)

But the Drumcomputer saga was so fun, c'mon :D
It will keep the forum 'alive' now that we know that the CB3.2 update will not bring AUv3 multi in/out support...

    seems very AD

  • Are Audio Damage bringing out something new? 😋 And what pray tell is the Audio Damage timbre? 🤣

  • Edit: the lucky winners are:
    Collisionaire
    Enrique Raphael Page Perez
    Clocktoys
    🎉🎉🎉🎉

  • @4Pockets @Gavinski /anyone: my use case for this is the editable automation, rather than the fader control per se, as I would like to use my LaunchControl XL to do a physical, but subsequently editable mix. Do you happen to know if you can map the LaunchControls’ faders to the ones in Paul’s app?

  • edited December 2020

Don't see that being possible @Svetlovska as midi mixer has no parameters exposed

  • Pauls Update video

  • So I am very curious to hear from AUM users who bought this. Has it become part of your workflow? How do you generally use it? Or has it been languishing in the app equivalent of the sock drawer?

I use it all the time! It’s very easy to use and makes short work of automation and scenes. My only request is for more snapshots.

@Gavinski I have started using it, and it enables things I've had a hard time doing, though it is true I could have done them using LK Matrix probably.
I'm working towards live performance of songs, where everything except rhythm tracks are played live, using AUM and GTL as fundamental apps.
I have a foot controller button set up (using a trick from @cuscolima on another thread https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/comment/894045#Comment_894045) that advances the scenes one at a time, though it's not foolproof, as I have to make sure to reset the Mozaic script to the initial state if I screw up and have to start again - If I was, say, on scene 3 when I screw up, I can't reset the scene directly on the Midi Mixer app and start again, my first footswitch press will activate Moziac which still thinks it's on step 3, and I'll end up on scene 4, instead of scene 2... It seems doing things in iOS is full of these kind of gotcha moments...
Anyway the app enables me to fade things in and out etc. It's only volume I'm altering at the moment, though I might use other things at some point.

So from my point of view, real time of control of scene selection seems like an afterthought... much as it was in Digistix, which I use in the same setup. Thankfully the option to select patterns via midi in DStix was recently added, but ideally I'd like a command to advance and reverse a pattern/scene by 1, for both these apps, and all similar apps actually.

This would be ideal for people doing live performances who want a degree of flexibility. You'd get 1 button operation rather than needing a separate button for each scene or pattern. If I'm feeling inspired during a performance I may want to stay on a particular section longer... the Song Mode in Digistix is no good for that, or the timeline automation curves in Midi Mixer. Hence the need in both these apps to be able to set up a sequential set of patterns or scenes, and advance through them at will. Currently I need to jump through a few extra hoops to achieve this with one midi control, but at least the ability is there, and it's very welcome.

Edit: Oh, and I really wish there was a more obvious indication of which scene was currently active. I've resorted to making a scene with all faders at 0 so as I cycle through them I can instantly recognise that as 'scene 0'. Though TBH I'm not sure how this would work as I find both 4pockets apps I use to be pretty bad with their windows visible. Fairly intense AUM projects immediately start crackling and stuttering with their app windows open, so I really can't afford to have them open during performance at all. I don't find this to be the case with other apps. Though I might well be wrong, I wonder if it's a result of less-than-ideal coding practices. If I was clever with Mozaic I could probably rig something up in that to display the info.

  • I use it all the time...

  • I guess this is something that gives mute or fades to aum timeline without aum recording the audio of tracks for it to be similar?

Does it be the same position if you rewind/reset aum?

Apart from a mute here or there. Would it be useful to cut off a sequence without having to edit sequence in a pattern?

Yes, yes, and yes. Indispensable to me at this point.

MidiMixer seem so complex… just want something to ‘snapshot’ the state/s of these pattern, scene based apps.. switch between snapshots.. maybe transition between them… like, well..

Edit.. maybe a Song Mode too..

  • Hei guys, can this be assigned to tweak midi CC’s for knobs on sythesizers? If not, what app can do it?

Both Helium and MIDI Mixer can do this. Midi Mixer has built in knobs and snapshots/ramp/stamp features, and 3 user assignable CC per 12 midi channel (36 knobs/CC automation lines per instance).

I made a video a few days ago about Midi Mixer, same method can be used with CC (usually mostly with real-time knobs movements recorded to timeline in this case):

  • Really nice video, @Janosax. You have the full 4Pockets Suite rockin there. I think MIDI Mixer is under appreciated...

I want to simply automate knob twists of a sorftware synth. How do I go about the process of mapping one track of midimixer to a knob? Usually I use autodetect but this wont work in the synth app cuz cant have both apps open while it recignizes movement. I can use midi mixers knobs to controll my synths knob? How? Sorry about my neaderthal iPad writing skills

  • @smund each midimixer preset fader is set to cc7 and so I find something I want to control and use the drop-down instead of midi learn. I then set it to be controlled by channel 1/cc7, then the next knob I want to control I set to channel 2/cc7 and so on.
This may be the right way to do it but I’m no midi expert, it works for me though.

  • @rud
“I’m no midi expert” lol :)

  • @smund although I do have to go to each channel’s settings in ‘midi control’ on the right side of AUM and clear the settings for volume as they are set to cc7 when I use the presets.
Again, I am a relative midiot and so the other folks here probably have a better way…

  • Where do I choose what channel is what midi Cc?

  • @smund top right corner, 2nd button down. The three line ‘hamburger’. Does that help?
