Cubasis Friends?

I’ve been trying to give Cubasis 3 another shot after hearing it come up so often here (I haven’t really loved it in the past - much prefer Nanostudio 2 and Gadget). But I don’t hate Cubasis and there are things it definitely does better, so I figured I better make sure I didn’t judge too quickly. I actually seem to get more done in Cubasis 2 oddly...

Anyway, a few questions that are driving me nuts:

Is there no way to add a specific scale so that when you go to edit/add midi notes in the piano roll you can see what notes are in the scale and what notes are not? This would be awesome to have on the keyboard as well but really kind of rely on both (seeing the notes on the in app keyboard and then also within the piano roll).

Drums - is all the drum editing done within the piano roll (I.e. where C1 might equal the kick drum and D1 might be the snare, etc?). I don’t understand why they don’t just have it load up a proper drum midi screen where all the drums are labeled? Am I doing it wrong? On that note, what drums are you guys even using in Cubasis? There are drums in Microsonic, The mini sampler and the classic machines? I’m losing my mind with this piano roll and then 45 mins later, when I finally get a few bars down, they sound horrible!

Is there no way to save a project? Thinking it’s an auto save but usually you can still save on your own.

If I sound like a whiny baby, apologies, not my intent. Each of these things just seems so simple and the app is laid out in such a simple make-sense way overall, I’ve just been dumbfounded that I haven’t been able to figure these few things out on my own (or find in the help/manual).

Thanks guys

    1. No scale option currently. It’s in their enhancement list.
    2. Standard drums are lacking a bit. Classic Machines let’s you use pads instead of the piano roll. Not sure about the others. I stick with EG Pulse as AU in CB3.
    3. No save button. I duplicate my project to make sure it saves.
  • Yeah, you’re pretty much right on all points.
    😕

  • I have a 'Love & Hate' relationship with Cubasis so take things with a huge grain of salt...

A far as I know there is currently no support for scales for the keyboard or midi-editor but I do hope it's something that is considered by @LFS and his team for a future update not too far away into the future.

As for the drums it's a mixed bag spread across multiple instruments.

The 'Classic Drums' feel more like re-packaked Microsonic presets and I won't even get into MiniSampler which lacks so many things it's well I won't type it here but it needs a LOT of TLC from the developers (can't even tune the imported samples like WTF?).

Some of the Microsonic Drumkits include more sounds than what are mapped to the pads (ie. using the piano keys one will find a lot of additional sounds) which was a nice surprise :)

One 'feature' that is often overlooked is that both the Classic Machine and Microsonic Drums support pitch-bend (wider range in Microsonic than in Classic Machines) and it's a quite nice.

Thankfully the built-in drum stuff is easy on the CPU so using multiple instances is quite ok.
I would still prefer to use multiple midi-tracks to drive the same instrument instance for arrangement purposes but the missing track2track routing makes this currently impossible. (ie. we can't choose to send the midi-output from a track to another track inside Cubasis or make a Cubasis track listen to another track in Cubasis).

The Cubasis piano-roll is it's own thing and will take some time to get used to especially when comparing it to the other offerings on the iPad/iOS (GarageBand, NS2, Atom, LK, BM3 etc.).

I do like Cubasis 3 for what it is but as with every single app I touch there is always plenty of room for polish and other improvements...

No need to be sorry, the 'whining' is just a sign of emotional connection with an app and not all apps have that 'quality' :D
    Cheers!

  • Right on guys. Well, it’s less frustrating knowing these things don’t exist! I appreciate the feedback. I was pretty sure I knew the answer for drums but the no saving and no scales boggle thee mind (especially knowing this ain’t their first, second or third rodeo!)

  • Thanks for the tip on pitch bend and reminder to use multiple tracks as well!

Well, Steinberg was late to the scales in piano roll game since it was one of the new features in Cubase 11 :)
Also Logic Pro still doesn't have note fold in the midi-editor but the note-quantize kinda makes up for it when moving events.

It is supposed to constantly save your work.
C2 used to let you save snapshots of Projects, but it seems to have been replaced by an Undo workflow.
It seems like everything you do gets saved on the Undo list. You can Undo pretty far, even if you open and close your Project or C3 multiple times.

  • Well, the feedback I received here regarding Cubasis 3, I went back to it this AM for a while before work. Turns out, I was a bit too harsh on the drum sounds.

For whatever reason, if I use my airpods in Cubasis, it looks like it's really messing up the sound. I know that bluetooth headphones in general aren't ideal for this stuff but for the apps that will allow their use, I normally don't have any big problems - I just know I'll want to go back later and check everything with the studio headphones.

Apparently, that's not going to fly in Cubasis though. The horrific sounds I was getting appear to be tied to using bluetooth. I took them off today while creating a drum track and listened through my ipad built in speakers and then with my studio headphones and it's a vast, vast improvement.

I even had a chance to play around with the pitchbend on the drum track for a while (awesome tip @Samu, I would have never been looking for that without your comment - thank you!)

This sound I was getting from the airpods was "just good enough" to where I didn't think anything of it (but bad enough for me to wonder why I'm messing around in the app at all). Is there any fix or workaround for this? A lot of apps I have used just don't allow the bluetooth head phones but for the most part most of the ones that do, it sounds alright. Any idea what's causing this in CB3 specifically?

  • It's kinda weird but I've never had issues with sound quality with my Air Pods 2 but the latency can drive me nuts at times :)
'Programming/Editing' works quite ok but real-time playing is taxing my patience...

I'm on an iPhone 8 (iOS14.2 at the moment) and a pair of AirPods 2 on the iPad Air 2 I just regular headphones or an audio-interface when needed.

I always have the Lightning EarPods at hand in case I need to do something in 'real-time' on the iPhone.

    Cheers!

  • @Samu - lol, that’s funny because I rarely notice the latency (very rarely - I actually started paying more attention to it because I hear that brought up a lot as being a big negative against their use and music production). There have been times where I’ve been watching it to see if I’m just missing the latency or if I’ve ignored it and I swear I’d almost say there is almost none at all a lot of the time. I know that’s pretty much impossible but it’s nice how it’s not noticeable in many different apps/setups somehow (for the time being!). I do notice a huge difference if I ever try to run my Microkey Air in Bluetooth mode + airpods though. I’ve found with most apps, I have to choose one or the other - usually just plug in the keyboard.

But on the flip side.. I’ve had this audio issue come up in quite a few apps lately. I thought it was tied to iOS 14 update (and it very well still might be - the timing seems very suspect as all these apps starting sounding like crap right after that). But now I’m pretty sure with some of the apps it’s specifically the airpods I believe. But even in those apps (Cubasis 3 is one of them), I can’t recalll it being an issue or at least not so prevalent prior to the update.

I’m going to also test the airpod pros versus the AirPod 2’s. Wondering if that could have anything to do with it as I only got the pros a couple months ago and was using the AirPod 2’s for a long time prior to that. Love the pros but the battery life is meh. I think I’d rather have the battery life in the end versus noise cancellation. As it goes now, I usually have both close at hand to swap out! Sounds similar! I’m on a 2018 iPad Pro 11”. No iphone anymore (switched to Android when the S10+ came out but I think I’m going back to iphone on next upgrade. I hadn’t caught the music bug when I switched to this phone and now I’m regretting it!)
