(Almost!) Everything You Need to Know about AUM (winners announced)

(Almost!) Everything You Need to Know about AUM (5 FREE Copies of ANY Kymatica App to Give Away!)

(Details of how to win ANY 1 of 5 free Kymatica apps are in the pinned comment in Youtube comments)

AUM ‘audio mixer’ for iOS is the host of choice for many experienced iOS music makers / producers. When you first start collecting apps in iOS, you need a space where you can use those apps together. For iOS newbies it is often GarageBand but after some time, many people look for an alternative to GarageBand. For some, AUM is their main workspace, for others a place to jam & experiment, for others a place to record audio to then take to a DAW to finish songs. There is a lot to like about it. Like any host / DAW it has a detailed manual and takes time to learn. This walkthrough will tech you all you need to know to get started, and may even have some useful tips for intermediate users. If you are new to AUM you will benefit from repeated views, perhaps watching this on one device while copying what I do on AUM on a second device. Remember also that you can use the Youtube settings menu to speed up or slow down as necessary. The timestamps below will show you all that is covered and help you find the most relevant sections.

Timestamps:
00:00 intro & giveaway details, how to find out if you won
03;25 opening instruments

25:48 how to record (please note - if you want to trigger more than one channel, just press R on all the ones you want to record), opening old recordings
29:12 opening/saving/naming files, clearing a session, making notes on a setting

AUM is my main iOS music workspace, so if you are not a subscriber I strongly recommend subscribing, as you will see me using AUM in basically every single video I make. If you find this useful, please do give it a thumbs-up. Feel free to ask questions in the comment section too.

Comments

  • A lot of ppl are forgetting in their comments that for this one you need to specify which Kymatica app you want to win. 😜

  • Well reminded, and great reference video 👍👍

  • Thanks again @Gavinski. Wishing you AUMerry Christmas.

  • Did you answer the most asked question:
“I already have Audiobus. Do I still need AUM?”
    😁

  • Did you cover the AUM Easter egg? I don't see it in the timestamps.

  • What Easter Egg pray tell?

When CPU is overloaded, AUM's file players degrade in a very tape-like way. It sounds a lot like moving the time control in Gauss. The trick is to get the CPU almost to the max, and then have an incidental app that you can turn on momentarily when you want to jiggle the tape.

  • Hmm, I think I'd probably rather just use gauss than risk also getting a cracklefest if it Does go over, thanks though 😋

Right! And considering this is the Audiobus forum, I think it is warranted to cover this in any AUM overview. Why is it necessary to buy this $15 app?

I have it, and use it almost exclusively nowadays but I'm still not sure why since Audiobus3 was doing me just fine for ages.

  • I don't think anyone asked this in the comments actually. And personally I couldn't give a good answer, as I have barely used Audiobus. Based on my limited experience with AB, I definitely prefer AUM, but it would take someone with deep experience of both to answer that question fairly and I'm not the man for the job.

  • Must admit it's always intrigued me that one barely encounters audiobus mentioned let alone being used ... so strange for an Audiobus forum ... subverted by use.... supplanted like a cuckoo in the nest.

Not sure what message that's sending but it's a demonstration of the uncontrollable nature of ios development.

    It's a wild beast.

I might, I’ve got an ATEM again (mini pro this time) but the subject matter probably won’t be synths, it’ll be UX design and pricking the bubble that is the cargo cult of wireframes etc.

  • Winners announced 🎉🎉🎉🎉:
    Keith Spicknell Dub
    Joshuah Moran AUM
    ItsDropp AUM
    Darren Gilbert Dub
    Scott Nystrom Space

  • Congratulations to the winners!!!

  • Audiobus does not recognize more than one Boppad. So, AUM only for me now.

  • @Gavinski , many thanks for a great video. Been using AUM for about a year and couldn’t work out how to move effects till your vid. Good stuff.

Cool! Glad t helped Tony. One thing I forgot to mention by the way - you can also switch channels around by doing a kind of flicking and dragging motion on the app icon at the top of a channel👍

  • Awesome!

Thanks @Gavinski! I'm one of those who never wins anything — so this gives special meaning to an others un-special 2020!

The best part of the video for me was the AUM MIDI routing segment, which allowed me to fully utilize my new KB-1 keyboard app!

Hopefully there will be a future AUM tutorial on de-mystifying the "Inserts and Effects" menu.

    Cheers!

I’ll also live stream it each time. To no-one, probably, but live streamed it’ll be.
