Lumbeats sync with xxxBud apps question

Probably user error but I am struggling to sync Middle East Drummer or Rock Drummer with any of the xxxBud apps. Might be me misinterpreting but in AUM they don’t appear to start at the same time and they then go out of sync. Additionally if I am on say 60 bpm the xxxBud apps play slower than the drummers, something to do with beats vs bars? On the limits of my musical / app knowledge so any help appreciated.

  • How do you have hbe sync setup?

  • @espiegel123 , I failed at the first obstacle... what is hbe sync?

Sorry, typo. How do you have the sync setup. What sync settings have you chosen in each app involved.

  • Ok, Can only find sync settings in ...Drummers so will investigate these. can’t find anything in xxxBuds. will get back once explored. thanks

Are you using the Buds as standalone apps or AUv3 in a host?

In order to sync apps, you will need to set them up to use the same sync method. Ableton Link is the easiest to get things going when apps support it. Until you have the apps set up to use the same sync mode ,there won't be synching.

  • using AUM
I know ...Drummer is using Ableton but will explore further...

If you press AUM's play button does the lumbeat drummer start? I've never had a problem with AUM and Lumbeat synching when using Link. Make sure that Start/Stop is turned on in both apps for convenience.

  • Think I am getting there but battery just died on IPad so will be tomorrow before I get back... have a good one!

  • @espiegel123 , bit closer now. I didn’t have Sync Start / Stop switched on in xxxDrummer which was the main problem. Second problem was that I needed to change the default Rate in StepBud from 1/8 to 1/16. This only works if you have 4 beats to the bar. Initially I had 5 beats to the bar (trying some unusual rhythms) but I can’t find a way of syncing this as StepBud assumes more traditional timing. Overall this now works say 50% of the time. Two problems remain I.e. starting the transport in AUM always starts StepBud at the correct time but a fair proportion of the time Middle East Drummer starts sometime after and is out of step. I can’t find a way of forcing the drummer to ‘initialise’ it’s timing. Other problem is Drummer crashes out quite often but not in a way I can reproduce. Hope this makes sense and any further help appreciated.

Are you remembering to rewind AUM's transport each time you choose play?

What hardware are you running on and what OS?

  • Yes re transport... think I have cracked it... User Error, I just realised that Drummer is playing a 5/4 rhythm but AUM was set at 4/4. It appears to sync consistently now I have set AUM at 5/4. Drummer still a bit flakey though, crashing intermittently. IPAd Pro 11, IPadOS 14.2. Many thanks for input.

FWIW, iOS 14.2 has serious coremidi problems that influence stability. I’ve never had a crash with MidEast Drummer in iOS 12 or 13. Apparently iOS 14.3beta solves some of the problems.

  • @espiegel123 , think you are correct. Have another app that has never crashed that now fails and the developer has confirmed it is a 14.2 issue. Cheers and here’s to 14.3.
