Help a midi noob with AUM midi routing.
I'm trying out Navichord as a composition assistant and want to use it with the only two apps that I own with samples and drums, ThumbJam and Drumjam. I set the up three apps above as the source of their own respective AUDIO tracks in AUM.
I want to use Thumbjam samples when I play in Navichord. As well, as Navichord's sequencer can't natively do rhythm styles or even time signatures other than 4/4, I want it to trigger DrumJam so I can at least have more than a simple metronome click.
- In Navichord, under midi outputs, "AUM", I toggled both "Notes" and "Clock" to ON.
- I used the AUM midi routing grid to send "AUM Destination Virtual" to "Navichord Virtual In" and to "Thumbjam Virtual". This worked, I now have the sounds I want when playing in Navichord.
After that, things stopped working as expected.
- I changed the BPM in AUM which resulted in the same BPM in Navichord. However, I want the opposite to happen where I control everything from Navichord, including the BPM.
- When I change the time signature in AUM (as there is no control for that in Navichord), Navichord does not respond.
- I'd like to stay in Navichord and hit play there to set Drumjam in motion. This isn't happening either.
- I've configured no routing at all for Drumjam, yet AUM is already controlling it. AUM can change Drumjam's time signature and BPM, as well as stop and start it with the play button.
Is anybody doing something similar that can suggest how I should set this all up?

I have a working setup. Let me try to walk you through it.
Open Navichord.
In Settings:
Audio is disabled.
Midi is enabled, using Navichord Virtual out sending Notes only.
Abelton Link is enabled, with Start/Stop enabled for Link.
IAA has both options disabled.
Open ThumbJam.
In Prefs > Options, enable Use IAA Sync. Disable Link. Don’t need to do anything in Prefs > Midi Control.
Open DrumJam.
In Settings > Options, enable Use IAA sync.
In Settings, scroll down to find Link and disable it.
Open AUM.
Load your 3 apps.
In the Metronome/sync settings, enable Link with Start/Stop enabled. Disable Midi Clock.
In the Midi Matrix, connect Navichord Virtual Out to ThumbJam IAA (not the Virtual Midi).
Go to Navichord, and hit Play. DrumJam should start, along with any Chord sequence in Navichord. Change Tempo in Navichord, and AUM and DrumJam will follow. You can also Start/Stop or change Tempo directly in AUM, too.
For the Time Sig issue, in Navichord Chord Sequencer you can set the duration of a Chord to a number of beats. You can get similar results if you don’t keep chord durations all at 4 beats. Hit the little edit button (looks like pencil and paper) to change chord durations by sliding on the numbers.
You can also change loop durations in DrumJam from 2-8 beats with the button on the far right of the DrumJam UI.
Hope this helps. If anything is hard to follow, just ask.
A little explanation:
Abelton Link creates a 2-way transport/tempo sync between AUM and Navichord. Controls in either will affect the other app.
ThumbJam and DrumJam are being controlled by IAA sent from AUM (the host). Link is disabled in the client apps so IAA control works properly.
Navichord sends out Notes on its Virtual Midi port. AUM connects this to the ThumbJam IAA port so it receives Notes from Navichord.
You could sometimes use Abelton Link to control the sync of all apps, but they all need the latest Link update that adds the Start/Stop feature. DrumJam doesn’t support Start/Stop yet, so IAA sync is the best option in this case.
This is pretty complicated. Turns out that I wasn't very close to your solution at all. I didn't know about the Navichord number slide bit to change time signature and thought Ableton link was probably for use with syncing to Ableton Live software so I just ignored it.
Thanks so much! It's working great now.
While we are here, do you know of an app that can interact with Navichord to play more complicated styles, like Chordbot, Session Band or iRealPro. What you've helped me do above is great as at least I have a beat from Drumjam, but with the instrument it's either a sustained pad or one pluck of an instrument on the first beat of every bar.
I think sending Navichord midi to an Arpeggio midi processor would be worth looking at.
The best one is possibly StepPolyArp Unit.

Another good one is ArpBud 2. Works great with RhythmBud, another app by the same dev.

The AU components of Aphelian are pretty fun when sending in midi chords.
