AUM i love the concept but...
Im inching towards my end goal for AuM (live use with band). But my latest barrier is this -> If i connect a Soundcraft Notepad 12fx mixer to my iPad (via a CCK) and view it in an AUM channel, I expect to see all available inputs (in this case the 10 (approx) inputs of the Notepad), so that i can then select 1 of them as (eg one with, day, a guitar plugged into it). I am connecting Notepad—>CCK—>iPad—>AuM, and the AUM input options available to me as seen on an AUM channel are just USB 1 & 2, or 3 & 4 (or 1, 2, 3 or 4 individually). I was hoping to see the first 4 (XLR/ quarter inch jack combis) and the 6 line in inputs as options which are the physical ports on the mixer. Instinctively it seems right I see the USB ports, not the individual mixer channels, but from what I’d read I thought I might be seeing all 10 physical inputs as options to select in AuM, not the USBs channels. Should I be able to select any 1 of those 10 ports as an input to an AUM channel, or is that a bit naive?
Comments
I don’t know the Soundcraft mixer but the option to see all the mixer inputs inside AUM may be a limitation of the mixer not AUM. AUM will show whatever the mixer lets it see and it’s common for USB mixers to only show the master outputs inside AUM not all of the inputs. What seems intuitive to you may not be how the hardware actually works. Good luck.
Thanks for the quick reply. I wondered about the mixer limitation. As I’m inexperienced with AUM i wasn’t sure what i should see.
Just checked the manual for the Notepad-12FX, it's a 4 in 4 out device.
Notepad-12FX
Using the Soundcraft USB Audio Control Panel for PC on the Soundcraft.com website, users can select the “Audio Routing” tab, to select the point in the console feeding the USB bus to computer.
For Inputs 1+2 the routing is fixed from: Mic Inputs 1+2
For Inputs 3+4 the routing can be selected from: Mic Input 3+4
Stereo Input 5+6 Stereo Input 7+8 Mix L+R
USB return will come into the input channel 9+10, which is the channel where the USB-B connector is attached. This signal is summed with signal coming in the RCA 9+10 jacks, before proceeding down the input channel strip.
So what you're seeing in AUM is what the device provides (ie. 4 inputs, 1,2,3,4 or 1&2, 3&4).
(The text comes from this manual https://www.soundcraft.com/en-US/product_documents/notepadusermanual_v-1-0-pdf).
There is simply no way to get all individual channels from the mixer to separate tracks in AUM.
It's a limitation of the USB implementation on the mixer.
Cheers!
Thanks Samu. Really appreciate you looking into that. This is all new to me and I struggle with the terminology a bit sometimes and what the implications are. Youre a star.
It's worth taking the time to work out how to use that mixer. I have one, and it's great, but the options are rather hard to understand. I keep having to read the manual again.
@Samu very generous of you to go the extra mile there 🙏
No worries, I was looking at digital mixers a while ago for a small PA and bumped into this one
https://www.soundcraft.com/en-US/products/ui12
Never got it but check the 'Software Demo' on what those can do remotely over wifi, super capable devices
(It works on both iPad and iPhone directly from the web-page).
It's 12 channels but only 2-out over USB...
Cheers!
Not that I advocate throwing more money at a problem, buying stuff until you get something solved...
But here is an option for anyone in the same boat (needing ins and the same number physical ins and virtual ins)
Zoom LiveTrak L-12 12-channel Digital Mixer / Recorder
12-channel Digital Mixer with 24-bit/96kHz 12-track Recorder,
5 Monitor Outputs,
3-band EQ,
16 Built-in Effects,
and 14-in/4-out USB Audio Interface - Mac/PC/iOS
AND
TASCAM Model 12 Mixer / Interface / Recorder / Controller
12-channel Multitrack Recorder/10-channel Digital Mixer
with 12-in/10-out USB Audio Interface
and Built-in Effects
Adding to the list - Soundcraft Signature 12 MTK (14 out/12 in) and 22 MTK (24 out/ 22 in)
I’ve had the 12 for years. It sounds really good to my ears, very musical channel strip. I’ve not had a bit of trouble with mine, but I think @echoopera had some issues with his.
It must be the mixer. My Behringer xr18 shows 18 ins and outs in AUM. You might be able to meet your needs with routing on the board.
Yep...just had to clean the unit this morning again. I get drop outs on Channels 9/10 at times. Not sure what's going on with that specific Channel...but the Compressed Air and Contact Cleaner appeared to bring it back to life...for now
It all depends on whether the device is class compliant and gives access through the class-compliant driver to all the inputs and outputs. Some multi-input/output devices use class compliant drivers and some don't -- and some may only make some features available through the class compliant driver. AUM will give access to all the inputs and outputs visible to the OS.
Many thanks to all who’ve taken the trouble to reply, and for the mixer recommendations. I have read the manual(s) and experimented with the hardware. I got to the stage where I wasn’t sure if my issues were lack of tech knowledge, or hardware or software limitations.
