VAMono by Ryo Togawa - Released

https://apps.apple.com/app/id1539829401

Description:

VAMono is a virtual analog monophonic synthesizer inspired by iconic monophonic analog synthesizers of 80's. The oscillators are capable of wide variety of modulation to shape the sound before the filtering stage. Pitch, shape and pulse width can be modulated by LFO, ADSR envelope. Xmod and Ring modulation offers audio rate modulation. Hard Sync offers a characteristic sync sound. Filter section and Amplifier offers classic sound of the iconic analog synthesizer of 80’s. Amp section additionally offers amplitude modulation followed by distortion and delay effect. VAMono offers built-in 64 step sequencer to sequence notes and parameters. Synthesizer and Sequencer can be used as an AudioUnit Extension (AUv3) or Stand Alone. Stand Alone Mode supports Ableton Link, Bluetooth MIDI and MIDI IN/OUT.

  • You are so incredible fast mate!!! :)

  • I would not update but i really wanted to try it. Hope Ryo will consider also iOS 13.7.

I wrote him asking it but no reply 😂

  • Ooooo a new synth! Bought :D

I really can’t help myself. I’ve only got 58 other iOS synths, not including built-in DAW and groove box ones... I need help!

Ok very early impressions... Needs preset scroll arrows, sounds ok but hardly mind blowing. Mind you I've barely touched it so will reserve judgement....

LFO tune knob? That's a new one on me.... LFO time.

Struggling with the sequencer. C'mon Gavinski where's your tutorial? ;)

Finding the sound very raw. Got so used to synths coming with so many effects built in. This one has just got a synced delay.

  • Ok 40 mins in now.

The presets are a bit uninspiring but I guess that's the nature of this synth; it's sounds like an old 2 oscillator (+sub) monosynth and that's actually quite refreshing. There's plenty of detailed sound-shaping potential here.

Still need to get to grips with the sequencer...placing 'notes' on the grid aren't producing sounds, only live jams work so far. As usual I'll be missing something obvious....

  • Still on 13.6, not getting it for a while then.

  • i know i’ma cheap skate but was hoping it was around 9$ on release...after xmas it is! hahaah hard times with all these kids 😂😂😂 sounds really good in the demos tho

  • Too little too late. The klevgrand got my money. Next time skip all the teasers!

  • It sounds good. I'd love to grab it but at that price there are a bunch of synths on my iPad looking at me with "what the heck did you buy us for GAS boy" eyes.

Maybe when he makes a 13.7 compatible version lol

  • Im not updating to IOS 14 for just one synth, I'll pass on this one

  • So, what is the point of this?
Why release an app with this sound architecture?

  • I trust the sound quality is pretty great from this dev but I’d like to see more demos of it before getting it at that price

You mean like VADrum? Sounds borderline horrible and got deleted as it was to late for refund. The pricing is a trick to make you think you buy quality. I certainly fell for it with VADrum, stupid as I were in that particular circumstance. Just read what FPC write above, sounds pretty much like my experience. I have spoken, as they say on some tv show. :)

  • I did consider trying to get a refund as I was disappointed but I'm actually impressed now. It was the basic sound that disappointed early on, it just seemed to lack any kind of wow factor. Even the filter wasn't much fun to sweep through....

By the end of my 1st play I'd dialed in a harsh detuned bass sound the reminded me of mid-80's industrial bands like Nitzer Ebb. I like.

And I suspect that once I figure a few more things out properly like the sequencer I'll like it even more.

  • So what ‘classic’ 80s synth is the filter modelled after?
I’ve been having a blast tweaking and sequencing the Viking and OB-XD...

Whatever it is modelled after, it is cheap and sounds awful. Refunded within 5 minutes. Agree with the above; trying to charge a premium price for a non-premium sounding synth may seem like a good idea psychologically, but there’s a problem when the user can get ahold of it and tell within seconds it is not worth the cost. Sorry, but not eating $15 bucks when there are ways to offer demos before buying and even Korg is doing it.

Unfortunately, in the iOS realm, this is a $4.99 synth.

  • Sounds good and nice UI but can only use it on my secondary iPad because ios14, a bit annoying...

  • Would be tempted to try it but 15 bucks is a bit pricey on a very saturated iOS synth market.

Lol. Well I certainly know what you mean and I nearly asked for a refund. And to think I hesitated over buying Sunrizer for 9.99 recently!!

The thing is, I bet I'd be left cold by plugging a pair of headphones directly into most vintage hardware monosynths. I don't think VAMono sounds bad, it's just sounds basic and probably quite authentic. And yes I own/ have owned a few examples of the real thing.

  • I’m getting some cool and unique sounds out of this. I’m going to the harsher side and getting it. The on-board sequencer adds a nice touch. 😎👍🏼

  • Screw it. I like it. Was hesitant due to the above and the price, but it’s snowing and there is nothing else to do. I enjoy the the modulation options and the sequencer which works even in AUV mode. It has its own sound and that sound is not crap. The clarion call of a new era. I am not drunk.
