Hardware Synths you own/like/want

1.5 years ago, i did not have any hardware synths. I always played stringed instruments, guitar, bass, mandolin, uke, banjo.. I love the analogue feel of the strings, the trueness.

Fastforward, i got married, wife let me have a man cave, and discovered a love for keyboard instruments. So, in the photo you can see a Sequential Pro 3, Roland Jupiter x and TR8S. Also but not in shot, SE-02 and Hydrasynth desktop.

And it's like wow! I just love messing around with the keyboards, so mesmerising. I'm self tutored string wise and am embarking on tutoring myself keyboard wise during covid and self isolation.

So, wondering what you all have, or would like,in the coming years?

  • About to start rearranging my set up. But here it is in its current state

  • This is a useful little video on synth gear envy.

Having said that, I’m drooling over the Notation Summit. But it’s well out of my price range, sadly.

  • There are a ton for me but to keep it brief I'll just choose 1 for now. Korg Volca FM with the Pajen firmware. It's not the deepest FM synth, but it's somehow enhanced by its limitations. Just a beautiful thing.

    I have...
    Kawai K1 mkII
    X-Station 49
    XioSynth 25
    Miniak
    MicroKorg
    Yamaha P60
    Hammond M1000 module

Currently waiting for the right Roland Gaia SH01 to come along...

Price range or financial problems are interesting, are you a student? All my expensive stuff has been purchased interest free over 6-12-18 months. I do work though and work overtime when i want or have the energy to do that. I looked so long at the Summit, wow what a synt]h❤️

  • I’ve got an old Moog Rogue and a Moog Grandmother. The GM can’t hold a candle to the overdriven Rogue oscillators and the creamy saw it can achieve with a little filtering, but sadly the Rogue is slowly dying. Overall disappointed with the Grandmother, but I’ll always need a mono synth for bass and it will get the job done.

Still badly want an OB-6 but it’s been a few years now and I never have gotten around to putting back money for it, so I’ll prob just settle for that new Korg opsix. FM sounds good for a change.

I wish I could be impressed with some of the cheaper analog polysynths, but alas. And I don’t want any desktop synths either, only the real instrument.

I used to have many over the years and sold them , the only one I regret selling was the original Korg MS20. Anyway I only have an Arturia Microbrute and recently brought a Moog Sub 25 which I’m in love with. I’m currently looking at getting a Korg Prologue and maybe the Behringer Poly D

  • @Strizbiz I recently got a Poly D. I know there's a lot of controversy surrounding Behringer, but for a relatively inexpensive synth it sounds really good and meets my desire to get Minimoog sounds from a hardware synth.

  • Have:
    PO-33
    PO-32
    PO-35
    PO-14

    Want:
    BASTL Kastle
    Modal Skulpt
    Volca Kick
    Moog Minitaur

I think Korg have really knocked it out of the park this year, first with the WaveState and then with the Opsix. Both hugely versatile and with great and well designed hardware interfaces. I wouldn’t object to getting either in my Christmas stocking! 5 octave versions with aftertouch in the next year wouldn’t go amiss though.

Congrats. The reviews I’ve watched really impressed me.

Here’s mine in order of likeliness of acquiring:
    1) Minilogue XD module.
    2) Moog Matriarch.
    3) Waldorf Quantum - why do I want this when I have Nave and various other wonderful things on iPad but I just do ... not bloody likely.

  • Man, I'm surprised to hear you aren't impressed with your GM @oat_phipps - it's quite possibly my favourite. Some of the tricks with it are amazing - the 3rd oscillator patch especially!

    I've currently got:

    Moog Grandmother
    Moog Sirin
    Moog Werkstat
    Make Noise Easel (0-Coast + 0-Ctrl)
    Korg MS-20 Mini
    Modal Skulpt

And I absolutely love all of them*

*Although I've literally just received the Skulpt so it's not even out of the packaging yet!

I've got a handful of Monotrons that I'm hacking into a 4 voice poly too but they don't really count until they're done.

    In the past I've had:

Bastl Kastle v1 (sold it to get 1.5 but haven't done yet and now I want a Drum too)
Moog Lil Phatty (too much function sharing spoiled it for me but it does still have some great sounds)
Moog Minitaur (had no choice to sell it at the time - needed the money - but was happy to ultimately replace it with the Sirin)
Minibrute (my first! Kind of regret selling that but I replaced it with the MS-20 so I've not exactly missed it as such)
Microbrute (keep seeing these go for around a ton on eBay and am often quite tempted!)
Microfreak (loved lots about it but ultimately it just didn't quite fit)

In the future I'll probably get:

More Moogs (DFAM, Subharmonicon, Mother 32) because connecting them all up is an addiction!

Maybe a proper poly, although I actually suspect that the Skulpt will cover my needs in this area (and that was basically why I bought it)

Roland MC-101 - Didn't pay much attention to it, until several people I respect each gone one and were posting props about it, particularly the workflow. This might be Roland's sleeper over the 707.

Behringer Pro-1 - Also ignored this one until my friend who's a synth head brought it up, saying the Pro-1 is his favorite bass sound - he means the sound of Zombi, not Yaz. Looked more into it, found it discounted $50 off and go it. Love the sound and ease of use.

Korg M3 61 - Kinda menu-divey and the presets have the squeaky clean digital sheen that people hated about romplers. The touchscreen doesn't respond to finger pressure anymore, so I have to plug the USB into my computer for editing. But it's got a nice keybed, and the sliders are consistently mapped from preset to preset - the leftmost two are always filter cutoff and resonance, etc. By moving the sliders, it's easy enough to dirty up those squeaky clean tones, or at least make them sound less generic. It's got decent bread and butter (piano, EP, organ, etc.) rompler tones, and the EXB-RADIAS synth engines. The output stage is loud AF too.

Teenage Engineering OP-1 - Got this used for $650. Got me through our band's gig at the festival after the Octatrack crashed - just loaded the audio samples we wanted to use for certain songs into the Tape, and played them as looped sections of Tape. People rag on the synth engines, but I actually like them. The most fun part of the OP-1 is the Tape, imo.

Moog Matriarch - one of the newer purchases, thanks to 10% coupon at Detroit Modular. This has been getting the majority of my hardware synth time. Gone through all the patches in the printed patchbook, and will spend next weekend going through one of the newer patchbooks on the Moog site. Basically just exploring patches to get the lay of the land before narrowing down which ones I want to use for a musical piece/production. It's more complicated than the Pro-1, but sounds so good that I don't feel daunted or frustrated.

  • I too have the Hydrasynth desktop and am really enjoying it.

Other recent excitement included the Dreadbox Typhon which is a tremendously fun monosynth with a great breadth of sound and a tendency to always sound good no matter which way you twist the knobs.

I also have recently got a Lyra-8 which seems pretty untameable. But fun too. And I have been buying a lot of bonkers FX pedals...

NIce! Yeah I don't see myself being able to by a real MiniMoog ANYTIME soon lol and the Poly D looks like a lot of bang for the buck plus from what Ive heard sound wise is a great analog synth.

  • @Strizbiz Yeah I’ve been having a lot of fun. The added distortion circuit is pretty cool – I managed to make the most convincing Herbie Hancock Chameleon bass patch I’ve heard to date

  • Yamaha DX21
    Roland SH-101
    MFB Dominion 1
    DSI Pro 2
    Dreadbox Typhon
    Roland MC-707
    Behringer model D

Want a new poly but still have not heard one that has the wow factor. Hoping for a new Dreadbox Poly, maybe based on the Typhon.

  • I’ve sold of everything except these 3 Elektron boxes.

  • My hardware of choice:

    Novation Peak
    Asm hydrasynth desktop
    Arturia microfreak with vocoder attachment
    Dreadbox Typhon
    Akai Force
    Roland MC707

And one day if I add anything it will be an osmose and a vsynth gt

Felt the same about the Grandmother when I had one. My MG1 (Almost a Rogue) just sounded so much better.

    I have:

    Roland System 100
    Roland SH-2
    Roland SH-09
    Roland SH-101
    Realistic MG1
    Moog Minitaur

    Sold this year:

    0 Coast
    MS10
    MS20

Hurt to sell the Korg MS duo but this year has been so bad financially. 🤦🏻

  • Probably the biggest surprise this year for me was the Hydrasynth desktop. Sounds amazing, dead easy to navigate and program, and not at all "digital" sounding like many think. It really is one of the nicest polysynths I've ever used.

PLUS, those pads for being able to play it without a MIDI keyboard are brilliantly done.

  • I have a Roland Juno 106.

I once owned an Oberheim Matrix 6R but it just didn’t make sense with my world at the time. I don’t regret selling it.

What I would wish for would be a matrix 6. The keyboard version. My opinion is they are overpriced on eBay. And... I’d be hard pressed to hear the difference between that and any of my iOS synths.

  • Recently acquired: Moog Matriarch.

    Still craving: OB6.

    Bass Station II

    Roland Gaia
    Korg SV-1
    Micro Korg
    Waldorf Rocket
A few of the little korg boxes and some pocket operators

I think I want a Digitakt but who knows if I even know what I want.

Beauty. This is just an absurdly powerful set of boxes. Trying to imagine the physical space required to make something like this available in, say, 1990 just boggles the mind.

Do you create songs that you can recall on the these three boxes alone? I know it's possible but often feels like a mental stretch for me with the Digitakt and the AKeys. Generally seems easier to sequence them externally when I want something I can easily recall. Also sure this is part of an internal disconnect for me—I dream of 'kits' on the DT and effing hate how often I screw myself with 'kits' on the Analog Keys!

I like stuff that doesn’t take up space and expressive controllers.
    I wish I had:
    Teenage Engineering OP-1
    0-Coast
    Squarp Pyramid
    Polyend Medusa
    Polyend Tracker
    Polyend Seq
    Artiphon Instrument One
    Linnstrument

  • That is the one I would gas for definitely.

  • I just sold off half of what I own to get the new Prophet 10. It’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever had. No regrets. :)

  • Congratulations! 👏👏

I owned a Prophet -V for decades. My housemate in the late 70’s was a SCI tech - we had various prophets in the house for repair. I might even have played a Rev 2... I bought mine from another SCI employee, who modded it with white knobs. It was cool! I won’t tell you what I payed for it... I sold it when I was out of work, and always regretted it. I should have found another way to find money... However, the sound wasn’t really where my music was at - but as a work of art, it was a beauty! I still have a fully tricked out ProOne with poly Swedish kybd and upgraded OS. And the marvelous u-He emulations, so I’m good.

    So happy for you!
