Getting started

Are there any basic step by step tutorials on how to use Audiobus? In the last couple of days I bought Jamup, BIAS, DM-1 and an Apogee Jam. I zero to little idea how to integrate it all into GarageBand.

The first thing I found was that GarageBand seemed to be able to connect directly to DM-1 without Audiobus. When I launch Audiobus and link DM-1 with GarageBand, I get a message in GarageBand that says "Inter App Audio Apps not available because GarageBand is connected to Audiobus". I thought I needed Audiobus to link DM-1 and other apps with GarageBand. Confused.

Basically I now have the tools but absolutely no ideas how to use them.

  • Inter-App Audio is Apple's own "version" of AudioBus - you can use AudioBus to connect either DM-1 with GarageBand, or both DM-1 and JamUp (or BIAS) with GarageBand at the same time.

Start AudioBus first with all other apps closed. Load GarageBand as the "output" DAW in that slot to the right. Then select DM-1 or the guitar app as the input (left side).

You can use the little mini control slider, which attaches itself to the edge of the screen to switch back and forth between apps. So you could start up a drum track in DM-1 using the little "play" button on the mini-controls while you are in GarageBand. The way to record things in GarageBand is to select the Audio Recorder as an instrument. That should bring up the screen with the old-school looking decibel gauge. You are now linked with AudioBus using whatever app is linked up with the flashing arrows on the AudioBus screen. Record and enjoy! There are plenty of people here who can help you.
