let’s talk auv3 filters!

i have most of the delays and reverbs available, but for some reason only a couple filters and so i find myself debating my next pick up.

i use pro-q 2 or some other EQ app a lot , or the hosts filters,.. AUM, NS2 etc, when i want to filter so i think that’s probably why , i also use filter step, SF1, JAF collection , bark filter and F16 filter.

looking for suggesting and i’m leaning towards bleass filter since they never disappoint.

what are your guys go to filters?

side note: i wrote moog and suggested they release an auv3 filter app!

  • I really like TB DualVCF for the variety of models, sequencer and envelope; it’s definitely my go to AU filter.

These are great! And JAF! But also, the ones in miRack dude, just use as audio fx. Lindenberg are butter.

Ummm... I can use miRack filters? I feel like such a dunce for not thinking of that.

mirack duh! why do i always forget to use it as an effect? 😂 love the filters there. good call man

  • 10 of the 70 effects in MixBox CS are filters... modeled on classic hardware filters from: Moog,
    Roland,
    Oberheim,
    Curtis

    and various filter types:
    Envelope,
    Formant,
    LFO,
    Phaser
    Auto-wah.

And you can run up to 8 of them on series in a single AUv3 or split across multiple AUv3's.

I’ve got a LOT of tinkering to do with Mirack Au Fx. I always forget that exists with so many modules to play around with.

Also Mixbox has some great filters!

  • a different filter for L and R 😂😆

if it’s still on sale, I HIGHLY recommend it. It’s so versatile and has a lot of meat on it’s bone. The tape emulation modules sound great, it’s got a lot of presets that work well on damn near anything. It’s a little CPU heavy but it’s a really nice app. Not to mention how clean and nice the UI is

  • @reasOne I’ve got the same ones you do.. don’t have MixBox or TB DualVCF.. yet..
But I do have the Bleass Filter.. when I think I need a filter.. I grab Bleass first.. why? 🤷‍♂️ It’s Bleass.. easy on the eyes + super easy to tweak.. and it sounds good.. 👍

Now I’ll be exploring the miRack filters too.. thanks for reminding me @auxmux

  • I use the iVCS3 VCF module all the time set to ZDF.

Best sounding filter in iOS imo!

    That one is fun.

  • Funny, I was just thinking about using Model 15 for an insert...so that's another one you could use.

  • WOW2

A sequenced filter like Looperator (also Sugar Bytes) is nice, too.

I like these two ideas, I keep forgetting to use ivcs3 this way, and didn't realise either that the moog could be used like this.

I'll second Bleass Filter, Jaf (absolutely love it despite the interface) and Dual VCF

  • Polyvloks seems pretty nice too but I never ended up getting the IAP for that. It's hard to heat using a filter that already had a built in lfo like dual vcf though

  • I keep saying I’m going to Bed....... but this thread had me messing with MixBox filters and hmmmmmm. Dang I’m impressed.... then I went down the rabbit hold of iVCS3..... I might be up for another hour.

  • Dual VCF has the least aliasing, sounds like actual analog and is also iOS (universal)

    I’m in the same spot.

  • dual vfc is sounding the most promising for an inexpensive universal auv3 option , also def going to use mirack filters a lot more.

Ahh this is a topic I was coincidentally researching a couple nights ago.

I just discovered that by hosting the following filters in Drambo, you can modulate them with envelopes and lfos at native resolution. They don't step, they can be used to create monosynths, and they all add character in different and very meaningful way. I urge anyone to explore placing one of the filters after a VCO and before an amp envelope in Drambo, to discover how much expression you can coax out of them through modulation.
I would love to know if the JAF Collection is worth the money. With integration into Drambo, these AUv3 filter apps take on completely invigorated meaning to me.

    Polylvoks Filter - RRS, OOO

    • extremely characterful, can really scream. Super fat bass, and a quite vocal bandpass filter.

    WOW - Sugar Bytes

    • tons of filter models and various distortion algos. Has a pretty full featured sequencer / modulation section. Not as well modeled as the TB stuff, but great for harsher, more overdriven sounds.

VCF AU (from iVCS3) - Apesoft

    • probably the best filter on IOS. Sounds legitimately analog. Has 2 filter models, one of which has an awesome saturation circuit. Loses tons of bass when resonance is increased however.

    Dual VCF - Toneboosters

    • Has the most modeled filters, and the highest quality after VCS3. The filters are a bit polite, but maybe I need to spend more time with it.

    SF-1- Numerical Audio

    • Haven't purchased yet, but the state variable filter is very attractive.

    Bleass Filter - Bleass

    • Also haven't bought. Seems very similar in concept to Dual VCF by TB, but had fewer filter models. I suppose it's an original filter design though instead of models.

    Filterstep - Audio Modern

    • Free, instant gratification. Very simple filter. Haven't had an opportunity to modulate it's cutoff with an envelope yet.

    F-16 - Blamsoft

    • Free, but don't sleep on it. Great filters, probably on par with Sugar Bytes WOW. Has a 24db bandpass which is awesome.

    Apefilter - Apesoft

    • Has all the various filter types in addition to the peak filter it's known for. Modulating or moving the cutoff with high resonance (on a lowpass for example) does produce stepping, but it sounds freaking cool. This filter stands apart from the rest in a big way, as the only multi peak filter. Kind of useful as an eq in some cases as well.

Additionally, Mela, Synthmaster One, and Moog Model 15 can all be used as music effects. So you can turn off their internal oscillators and run your own instruments through the filter / VCA, and even trigger them by midi.

Mirack has oodles of filters. Sunvox has one filter, with various modes, but you can of course add as many of that filter as you want.
Drambo has IMO the nicest filters after IVCS3, and has various models. The self resonating 24db ladder is not to be overlooked - beautiful.

  • @aleyas well informed and brilliantly informative, thanks for this post!

  • BLEASS is my go-to. Very easy to use and can really add some flavor.

  • edited December 2020

Echoing others. I forgot this one: Polylvoks. Phat AF. Need to try iVC3. I love filters, more than oscillators.

I use MI/Audible Links for LR to Mono into Filter and duals from filter to LR.
