I've even seen some use a compressor to compensate for lousy microphone placement or make a weak persons voice overpower the others with much stronger voice which is totally un-natural...
Worst insult to a sound engineer:
“Do you even compress?”
Learning how to use compression is well worth it. Subtlety is the key unless one is going for the squish as an effect in itself. Used judiciously, it will add punch to bass lines and forward momentum to any rhythmic parts, among so many other parts.
I have discovered my new talent, and I clearly succeed better with it than with my music:
I get a discussion going in a virtual room, people starts arguing back and forth while I silently back away....
Be safe!

Four most important audio processing tools (in order of importance):
1) Volume knob
2) Pan knob
3) EQ
4) Compression/limiter
5) (Bonus) Reverb
Since they are the most important, they are also the most often messed up in the same order of importance.
