Need help with Looping setup

Hi guys, I'm looking for apps that are stable enough to use live. I currently use GTL as a looper in AUM and have a Melo audio tone shifter as an audio interface and midi buttons. As effects I use eos 2 for a nice reverb, dubstation for delay and tone stack go for a guitar to bass octaver. The problem is that there is always problems, the reverb and delay apps quite often just stop working so its quite hard to stop the flow of a live performance to fix this. Sometimes there is a weird shutdown which causes that awful computer loop error sound. I so much want to use this for a live setup but can't seem to find a stable config of apps. If it can't be done I will probably go back down the hardware route but I do love the setup I have, its just that I can't rely on it. What are your opinions, is there other IAA reverb and delay apps that are more stable, maybe I can use something like bias fx for all effects instead? its around $80 for the bias fx package so its a big chunk of money to spend on something that may not be stable enough, and if it is stable, are the reverbs going to be good enough? I know this is not the best question but I thought id start a discussion to see if anyone else has some light that they could shed on this matter

  • What hardware are you running on?

I have a Melo audio tone shifter as an audio interface and plug a mic and guitar into. I use an Iphone 11 pro

  • First, I recommend eliminating as many IAA as you can. Use AUv3 whenever possible.

In general, remove as many moving parts (apps and connections) as you can.

If you're still having issues, I recommend checking out QuantiLoop. It's a solid gig-ready looper that can also host the few AUv3 that you need.

Are you running the reverb and delay as AU or IAA? As mojozart said, AU is the way to go for the delay and reverb.

What do you mean that they stop working? Do they crash?

There is no reason to think that BIAS would be an improvement.

As an experiment, try your setup without ToneStack to see if it is implicated in the instability.

I haven’t used GTL in ages but I find Loopy/Audiobus/AUM to be a very stable looping environment.

  • I use GTL hosted in AUM and have never had problems like that. It sounds odd. Do the problems still occur if you're ONLY using those 2, without the effects etc? Is you're iPad recent, and powerful enough? You're not maxing out the CPU?

Is Bias AUv3? Overloud THU is AYv3 and worth a try, the basic version is free and you can buy extra stuff as you need, all the FX and amps in the world. I can get very useable tones out of the free version with no extra purchases.

IAA apps are likely the cause of your “crash” which sounds like a freeze. There are more than a few IAA apps whether due to Apple constantly moving goal posts, or developers who implement poorly, (or don’t update) that perform less than stellar with more than one moving part - that being themselves.

You don’t need to switch to an ONLY AU3 EVER mantra, just be aware that the os and it’s supporting structure has moved on. I use IAA apps all the time just never more than one at a time and I never expect them to be flawless.

Thanks man, I didn't realise IAA's weren't as stable as AUv3's so that's good to know. Yes I love quantiloop too but recently fell in love with the ability to have many song parts in GTL

Yes the reverb and delay I am using with IAA, I tried with AU and they still froze. I gave up on the delay and reverb plugins and decided to use tonestack for all input effects, I bought the motherload and am quite impressed with the quality. This means I don't even need AUM, I just use tonestack as an input effect in GTL and it seems to be pretty dang solid. It did freeze a couple of times but I was editing and saving presets in tonestack when this happened so I dont think that will happen when just playing and changing presets (fingers crossed)
I use to use Loopy but it didn't suit my workflow, it would have been great to be able to trigger whole rows in loopy for song parts like session view in Ableton. Maybe oneday Mike will finish and release Loopy Pro?

Yeah I figured it was due to the developers not staying current with their updates, I guess its hard being a developer with apple constantly changing their IOS
