Record MIDI tracks of unlimited length from AUM

edited December 2020 in General App Discussion

Hello, I'm new to iOS music production and I've bought a bunch of recommended apps taking advantage of the last black Friday offers.
My main goal would be to make DAW-less improvisations with both hardware synths and iOS apps sequenced from my iPad. Still, I'd like to record MIDI tracks from my free-flowing improvisation, so that I can possibly edit and play them back at a later time.
For now I'm mostly using AUM. I found a few threads discussing how to MIDI record in AUM, however it is not clear to me which of the apps commonly suggested for the job (e.g. modstep Xequence 2, BeatHawk 2, BeatMaker 3, Photon AU, Korg Gadget 2, StepPolyArp) would allow me to record in parallel a couple of MIDI tracks of unlimited length, that is not limited to predefined pattern lengths.
Right now I own: modstep, Cubasis 3 LE, Korg Gadget 2, MixxMaster, sequencism, Fugue Machine, Mozaic. If possible I'd try to stick to what I already have.
Thanks for any help you may provide!

    Unlimited by length?

Xequence2 is the only one I’d recommend. Especially for its midi focus and editing capabilities. @SevenSystems made a wonderful tool.

If you insist in recording directly in AUM use Atom (large update coming early-ish next year)

Beathawk is limited to16 bars and (correct me if I’m wrong) doesn’t export midi. I don’t think anything you already own does what you want.

  • Xequence 2 is great for midi. You can use gadget and arrange all midi in X2. The editing options and workflow are fantastic. When using it together with aum and ab, you can switch easily between apps and save the entire project in ab.
Its my favorite setup before I move everything to audio in a DAW.

BeatHawk does have midi export as an option from song mode. Also, it’s a bit fiddly but you can chain patterns in song mode to record more than 16 bars at once.

Another option might be the midi recorder module in NuRackFX, the dev mentioned midi export may be added to this at some point.

I’m sure Atom 2 will cover midi recording and export needs when it’s released.

  • I think the best auv3 solution right now is LK..

Use case specifies UNLIMITED length recording

  • I really believe Xequence 2 is the best, and only, answer. It's the only one that can record (virtually) unlimited midi, is solid as a rock and has terrific accuracy. But most of all, it has the editing and export capabilities that are needed for something like this.

The problem with most MIDI recording is it assumes you have set a tempo and stick to it, and that tempo information is embedded in the recording. This is a problem if you're improvising and not sticking to a fixed tempo. X2 is no different in this regard, but it has the ability to time-stretch (or compress) a clip to fit any tempo. So, even if you started off the recording at one tempo, you have the ability to adapt the parts you want to keep later to fit a different tempo.

Add to this that it has excellent midi export capability. Once you've identified the parts you want to keep, you can export just those clips individually without having to destructively edit the original recording.

I could go on further, but I think there's enough differentiation in X2 to make it the only clear candidate on iOS. If there's something better I'd love to hear about it.

Unlimited length is possible on LK though it isn't obvious. Delete a clip and you can record into the empty slot. That clip will be whatever length you recorded.

It is handy for recording on the fly.

  • Forgot to mention earlier: Caveat - X2 doesn't do MPE (yet).

  • I was wrong about Beathawk and wrong about LK. Imma quit answering stuff for today. :(

  • Agree on Xequence being the best option.

But sticking to the apps you already have, I would put Cubasis first, as you could record both midi and audio from your noodlings. (I just don't like it for editing the midi later)

I bet it can be done with sequencism too, but it didn't click with me.

The other options all stick to 1-16 bar limits, as far as I recall

  • Xequence for sure

  • Thank you all!
I will try to make it work with Cubasis LE first, since I own it already (I've never liked Cubase's workflow though, I find it convoluted).
I quickly tested recording multiple MIDI tracks in Sequencism but I couldn't make it work.
Xequence is certainly next on my list. @wim The lack of MPE support is not important for me right now. Thanks for pointing out the issue with fitting MIDI data to a tempo.
I'll keep an eye on Atom for a new version allowing MIDI export.

  • Maybe you can end up recording the midi in cubasis and then editing in sequencism

  • When is the Atom new version expected to drop?

Might have to reload Xequence. For some reason I couldn’t get along with it.

The developer said something about after his ‘break’...

Edit.. he did say it was ‘pretty solid’ out of Beta..
