PDC in ios DAW
Dear forum users!
Could you tell me if any of the DAWs presented today have plug-in delay compensation (PDC)?
If not, then maybe someone knows whether the delay introduced by the plugin is always the same or its size depends on the plugin settings?
Comments
It depends on the type of plug-in.
Plug-Ins in the 'Compressors & Limiters' category as an example usually have a look-ahead setting which can vary thus the delay that needs to be compensated for will also vary.
While implementing PDC may sound easy on paper it might present challenges that are not so easy to solve.
On iOS I have no clue about how many of the current AUv3's actually time-stamp the audio and midi packets...
...this is essential information in order to make PDC work...
I don’t know if NS2 fulfils your criteria of being a DAW (no audio tracks yet) or if the latency is even compensated for (my ears think it does, but what do they know) but on each instance of an AU effect it does seem to at least state the latency.
It is the limiter that gives the delay in my case, and it is quite noticeable. I have NS2 I will try to do something in it, although after the purchase I was very disappointed. Cubasis, Auria not compensating?
For me the lack of PDC is most noticeable when using 'Freeze' & 'Mixdown' between locators since there is always a 'gap' in the beginning of the rendered file causing it not to loop properly.
It affects quite a few other effects as well but limiters in particular suffer from this...
And it's not just Cubasis. Many apps 'forget' to compensate for plug-in delays when rendering loops (Flip Sampler is one of the newer ones) and it's kinda annoying...
Let's hope 2021 will be the year when PDC will make a break-thru on iOS/iPadOS
Oh when you say ‘the limiter’ are you referring to ProL2 specifically? If so setting it to ‘transparent’ will reduce latency as much as possible. Works extremely well for me.
No, I use Maxima.
NS2 does have plugin delay/latency compensation.
You can even manually set a delay time for external hardware with the midi instruments tracks. Although it’s up to you to work out what that delay is :-)
That is super handy!
Auria has delay compensation I am pretty sure. I think it was added a year or two ago.
