Reslice vs sEGments. Which is better for what?
I think I want a loop slicy thing.
I feel like sEGments is cooler, I get that vibe in a marketing kinda sense but I'm not shallow enough to be influenced by that (am I???? probably yes)
I like what I've seen of the arp features on reslice, that looks quite unique.
I like on sEGments that you can record directly into it within AUM as an AUv3.
Anyone have both? What are the best features and worst failings of each? What is the killer thing that would tip the scales on one direction or the other?
I know I want to be able to bring in drum loops from desktop land, and slice them up for individual hits to use in drum apps on iOSland, and maybe for the shuffling of slices etc.
Thanks!

sEGments has a really nice feature - to play a slice chromatically. Reslice has a mysterious option under pitch tab that let the user select midi pitch bend range (activated by mod/pitch bend wheels??), but I did not manage to make it work (but was trying inside and outside of a DAW).
Did anyone here managed to figure this out?
A big advantage of Reslice are quite complex and numerous FX that allow the user to further refine the samples. And often put them on another level.
Hi @SimonSomeone!
I use both:
Reslice has a polyrhythm arpeggiator and exports slices as wavs in a zip file.
sEGments has really good BPM detection, identifies root keys and has multi-output AUV3.
@israelite and @Stuntman_mike thanks for this.
I don't really care about BPM detection or identifying root keys. Multi out could be useful, but I think for my probable use case the FX, the arpeggiator and the slice export of reslice would be quite valuable.
I use both -- each for its own strengths. Re-slice's arpeggiator is very engaging for me. I really enjoy using it discover new things. For slicing that I will want to export, I use Auditor. It can export loops as AppleLoops (for use in BeatMaker3, GarageBand,BeatHawk and sEGments. And if you export as individual slices for use with a sampler, it also creates a MIDI file that will recreate the groove.
I have Auditor and didn’t know it exports Apple Loops, good to know!
Both are great and as pointed above each has stronger points
Things I like the most about each, ReSlice
Now for sEGments:
Both have similarities and both good points that are just different or a matter of taste. For instance FXs on both are good but ReSlice has more effects adjusted with dials and in sEGments they are set using a x/y pad. Besides comparing the features, what may make someone prefer one may be just a matter of feel.
I made a few videos with each, they are not tutorials even if they have some tips in them. I am posting one for each below.
thanks @espiegel123 and @zvon . I'll take a look at both your vids
those vids are great. I really love what you did with those vocal samples, but also I can see the value of the segments approach.
Some reslice fun

Glad you liked the videos, thanks. I hope they will be helpful to you!
@espiegel123 Cool demo of the arp!
VIrsyn arp is fantastic and especially when, like in ReSlice, it's possible to have up to 4 of them at once. I bought their MIDI version Arpeggist (single arp), so I can use it with non-Virsyn apps.
I have both and have found Reslice to be more useful in my projects. sEgments is cool, but I have issues with waveform display, 16 slices being to little, and the warping/key function not always being reliable for me. What I do like is the MIDI control over all the parameters of each slice, as well as the other various slice settings. Reslice is more enjoyable for me due to how I like to slice samples, but I wish it had sEgments MIDI control and such.
In the end, just get both!
Thanks for all the input everyone. I bought reslice in the end, while it was on sale. Haven't even opened it yet but I'm looking forward to trying some things out
I tried the “export slices” function in Reslice but I had some issues...
Cheers!
Did you open a regular drum track or something abstract?
I haven’t had problems with that. With any slicing, one does need to take care as to where the slice points are. Did you know that you can zoom in by tap-holding the the top of the slide markers in slice edit view?
No, I didn’t know that, I’m so glad I do now!.
But the “pops” don’t happen in Reslice, only in the exported wavs.
I was playing with the arpeggiator after reading this post... it’s really something. So creative, deep and yields such unexpected results. Wonderful.
I have to investigate ReSlice a bit more, last time I tried it as an AUv3 I was unable to import samples into it...
...but I had no problems using the presets created in the stand-alone in the AUv3.
Maybe it nowadays it supports Drag'n'Drop from from the Files.app pop-up into the AUv3?
Cheers!
I’m afraid not. It’s rather annoying drag’n’drop is like a luxury. The whole iOS file system needs some serious rethinking. Whatever “sandbox security” concept is behind it only causes more clicks and wasted time, since you import and copy stuff anyways.
For the most part I'm ok with drag'n'drop from the Files.app pop-over or the standard Document Picker when using AUv3's.
I do hope @VirSyn will consider adding support for both options for getting samples into ReSlice AUv3.
It would also be nice to load ReSlice into AUv3 FX slot for recording samples as well as a 'trim' feature when saving the preset.
As long as apps have proper Files.app support I'm ok with them.
Cheers!
I haven't had pops in exported slices either. I would guess that you just need to adjust your slice markers to a position that won't be pop inducing.
For the AU, you can paste audio from the clipboard. It doesn’t have import in the AU or drag/drop. But you can use copy from the files app and paste into the AU.
Thanks!
(I still have bad, bad memories from the 'Audiocopy/Sonoma' pasteboard thing that left a copies everywhere).
Didn't realize copy from Files.app worked too, thanks again for the tip.
It's just as quick as drag'n'drop and no need to keep finger on screen while dragging
Cheers!
Yeah, nice, thanks! Slide over ain't my copy of tea ☕.
Just in case it isn’t obvious, you can copy from pretty much any share sheet not just Files.
Can reslice or sEGments export the individual slices as wavs to load into something else like PlayBeat? Thanks
Reslice will export slices. It can also export a midi file to recreate the original file. I don't thing segments exports slices.
@NimboStratus Segments can only export slices to EG Pulse, but I don’t have the latter so I don’t know if it’s separate wavs that get transferred
