“ In 2005 I started a series of mixtapes with the goal of capturing significant Black historical movements and events. With a backdrop of hip-hop beats and grooves, I spent weeks searching for what I felt were soundbites that when pieced together could tell a story. The idea was to have some kind of history book on wax, some form of a time capsule I could pass onto the next generation, my kids. So from “It’s Right To Be Civil” to “Invisible Soldier” I set out to create a history lesson that wasn’t taught in schools or were not widely known within the community and at times I felt these key events were intentionally suppressed. Here we are in 2020 and it feels more relevant than ever to share black historical stories and pass on the information, hope it inspires you to dig deeper. ”

  • Damn @gusgranite I totally missed this!

  • Nils Frahm, Fundamental Values. Released recently but I’m listening to it on repeat.

  • Wouldn’t call it a favorite cos I heard it yesterday for the first time but I want to share this one because the production is just amazingly beautiful. Astonishing sound and separation. Hear the vocals...double tracked or micro pitched. Dunno but it’s superb.

Reply with your one favourite new album released in 2020.

I spent most of lockdown listening to music released pre-millennium, but the one new album that hit the spot for me was...

Once and Future Band - Deleted Scenes

@tk32 ...wow, did not know this band, what a fine/amazing album....thanks for the tip....really keeps me going!! happy holidays

  • Bring Me The Horizon : Post Human: Survival Horror. As a 53 year old that went to see Metallica open for Ozzy Osbourne, metal was my only genre for years. This EP has that kind of edge and energy, but with a dash of the synth based music I've grown to love and some amazing production. Their singer, Oliver Sykes has one of those voices that you either love or hate , and on their earlier releases some songs were nothing but screaming but he's dialed it back here except for moments where it's used for effect. I recommend "Teardrops" and "1x1" specifically.

@gusgranite : love that Power Tapes tip.

I really, really, really want to pick two, because it is really a tie. Sonic Boom (from Spacemen3, et al) and Jarv Is... (aka Jarvis Cocker from Pulp's new band)... Two old geezers really making great music that continues but does not repeat their past.

intensely psychedelic, makes the hopeful future one feels throughout seem real and achievable...

    and

brilliant lyrics, amazing vibe resulting I guess from the fact that these were worked out and largely recorded live

    Sorry for the rule breaking.

  • Thanks @Jurri - I’m so glad you’re enjoying it. Their previous album is also worth checking out. :+1:

As much as I admire the works of Messrs Gilmour, Mason, Barrett, Waters and Wright, I don't think either of these albums fit my criteria of being newly released in 2020.

(Apologies if my thread title didn't make this unambiguously clear)

  • Time has stopped in a moment of ecstasy for @synthlover 😉🎹🎵🕺👍

  • Robert Haigh - Black Sarabande

    Timeless

favourite album is "Free Love" from electronic duo Sylvan Esso

    Sylvan Esso Ferris Wheel

(also track of the year for me)

closely followed by "Only Child" from the incredibly talented and wonderful Sasha Sloan

    Sasha Sloan Hypochondriac

that's two, I know, but both well deserved being mentioned here

.. (Spotify links added in the album titles)

Yes, been playing Sylvan Esso a lot this year.

  • This album was one of my most listened this year really. Like his production style and the songs, a lot from the album they are very catchy :)

  • I almost kid (due to multiple streaming services and the ala cart modality)...

    What is an “al-bum”?

  • The Ocean "Phanerozoic II: Mesozoic | Cenozoic".

If you can get through this tune ("single") from it you might like the full thing.
