Playing (piano style) chord in Geoshred

Hi,
Sorry if this has been already discussed before (could not find any thread).
I am trying to play piano chords and melody combination using Geoshred similar to what this video shows using Linnstrument -

But I am struggling to get a good chord map guide. For example what finger position and note layout I need to play (say) C major chord, A-flat minor chord etc.. It will be time-consuming to find out comparing with piano layout like C major chord is C-E-G and then look for those notes in Geoshred and memorize..
(I am using Geoshred All Fourth layout which I believe same as Linnstrument default layout).
Also, any video of anyone playing piano chords using Geoshred also can help me with a visual guide.

If you use the Fourth Layout you should be able to use the shapes indicated on the Linnstrument documentation:

But your total layout is limited to one octave on the horizontal and 4 "strings" vertically. So, you can only access 25% of the Linnstrument's layout.

Also, most Geoshred presets are monophonic. It's great for shredding a guitar solo but not the best keyboard for chord style playing. But you can get
    some triads shapes.

  • If you’re aiming for piano style playing, wouldn’t it be easier to use a piano keyboard?

Blue Mangoo's "Velocity Keyboard" app has a layout with more visible notes:

But on my 9.7" iPad it's very small. You can drop the number of rows and columns to other values. I just selected the settings of the Linnstrument in this image.

  • @sujoybose77 , @McD is correct that many supplied presets are Monophonic but this can be changed (for most of the presets). To make it equivalent to a guitar you need to change the Play Mode to String. This allows one note per ‘string’. To make it like a piano then change the Play Mode to Poly. This makes each fret play a separate note e.g. like keys of a piano. These settings are available from the Performance Settings menu and can be saved.

Thank you so much for finding this chord chart... This is exactly I was looking for..
FYI - Geoshred also not restricted to only 6 strings (rows).. You can change that in config layout.. I will surely try this and see what is more "playable" grid for chord shapes..

Thanks.. Yes I am already aware of this

  • I agree that Velocity kb is superior for playing chords. GeoShred only has 6-voice polyphony.

Those triad fingerings are too hard to play with one hand. Here’s a better way for one-hand triads:

Index and ring finger play two notes on the same row, a third or fourth apart depending on the inversion. Middle finger plays a note either on the row above or row below.

Damn! It looks like a bad GO game in progress. Great skills @sujoybose77. But the MPE aspect is wasted, no?

Noise Melody app has some MPE piano sounds. It’s fun to play the Rhodes patch and then bend a whole chord down a whole step.

  • yawl need some chapman stick right hand skills or literature. Happy year

    Thanks @LinearLineman
I know MPE style is very easy with the great instrument you invented.. I am very comfortable with SWAM instruments in Geoshred/velocity KB. You can check my youtube channel

It's the chords that I am struggling with and hence started this thread to get some help.. I am practicing chords in Velocity KB as you suggested.. Let's see how it goes before I dive into Linnstrument.

  • Thank you so much @McD
    This helps a lot..

  • Haha @sujoybose! Proving that not all Lin’s are created equal.

@Wrlds2ndBstGeoshredr that's a cool technique.. I will try that.. Any trick for 7th chords with one hand? Finding it very hard..

Start with the triad fingerings above. If the triad uses the row above, the fourth note you need will be on the row below, and vice versa. They present visually as a diamond shape. Playing these with one hand requires adding in the pinky and thumb to achieve all possible combinations of four fingers—and a lot of practice.

Very good stuff, thanks. If you know your three-note shell voicings on guitar, they translate very easily.

  • When it comes to harmony, I have yet to settle between guitar tuning and fourths (fourths is clearly superior for single-note shredding). I am very good with guitar harmony, but the technique is so different on screen with two hands. Fourths seems more native. Any good thoughts on this question?
