Best multitouch midi strumming /guitar interface with chord select pad for iPhone?
Hello!
Can anyone please tell me what the best midi strumming apps are for iPhone?
My goal is to find something similar to this GuitarCapo interface, but this hasn’t been updated in 5 years and is a bit awkward to use so I imagine there must be something out there that really shines at this task
My goal is to find something where I can strum and jump between chords at the same time. If there is a way to automatically populate/randomize the chord selection pads based on the song key that would be incredible too
I have 4pockets strum which is great for chord sequencing but I find cumbersome for performing as the strings are on a separate GUI page from the chord selection tab
Comments
ChordUp and PolyHarp are worth a look.
Guitarism has chords on the same page. Haven’t used it for a long time though so not sure if it will do everything you need it to.
Edit. It has the chords on iPad, not sure about iPhone
Guitarism is a great app on both iPhone and iPad. Has the chords on the iPhone. I use it mostly when I don’t have a guitar handy. Has some good internal sounds but it is also a powerful midi controller. You also want to look into ChordPolyPad as you can make your own chords and strum as well.
@annahahn Have you tried the new strumming in Tonality? You can either tap chords and play them on the side bar (which is resizable and can operate horizontally) or assign individual pads as shown above.
There’s also a way to auto-populate chords from any of the common modes or drag guitar charts onto them
I’d be happy to answer any questions you may have (or discuss suggestions)
@TonalityApp thank you for this! I downloaded tonality a month ago after people raving about it but the interface is so rich and multilayered many of this features eluded me
How do I go about turning individual pda into strummable pads that do not require using the strum bar like in your example image? Is there a quick start guide anywhere? Also how do I auto populate the pads?
@annahahn Yeah I’m trying to get a manual or tutorial series finished. The manual for the previous version is on my website and in the settings page of the app, but it doesn’t cover the strumming yet. In the meantime I’m always happy to answer questions!
To make a pad strum individually, hold down the button you would press to access the strum bar and tap the pad(s) you want to strum. Tapping again will turn them back to normal. The next update will make this process a bit more obvious by causing the pads to jiggle when you hold down the strum button.
The auto-populated sets can be accessed by going into the preset menu (top left button) and selecting “scale chords”. From there you can select a key and whether or not to include secondary dominants, ninths, etc
Once you’ve selected a key, you can enter scale mode to quickly access the same chords that were auto-populated. See the screenshot below
I think a combination of chordbud with rhythmbud might also do it, but I haven’t yet tried this myself. Do you want regular machine-like strums, or more humanized harp-like strums?
I can recommend Chordup for strumming and quick chord access.
InstaChord-i is a new app for strumming and quick chord access.
Free to try.

Hi! Can the strums be triggered by a midi controller?
@Stuntman_mike Hello! Not currently, though pads can be triggered externally. The strumming is designed to be played live with your finger.
Yes, I love triggering chords in Tonality with all my controllers: K-Board, Light Block, Beatstep Pro, Keystep, MPD218 and Launchpad Mini! Thank you for making a great app, updating it often and listening to user feedback. 😁
I think it would be cool to add MPE or modulation access to the strumming!
@Stuntman_mike Definitely considering it! For now did you see you can assign XY CC controls to each pad?
Oh wow, I didn’t! I need to play with that tonight! Thank you 😊
How do I access the XY CC?
@Stuntman_mike Tap the three vertical blue dots at the bottom of the chord pads page. Let me know if you have other questions
@TonalityApp , sorry to divert the thread, but can i request a feature ? Could you add a dedicated page for performance which shows only - key, scales, chords and keys (for melody) ? The key/scales could be changed on the fly with a single button press.
Couldn't find an app that has this feature.
Are there any strumming apps (manual strumming) that run as audio unit apps. I would love a strumming app that runs as an audio unit in Zenbeats. So I can do everything in Zenbeats window.
@bobpadUser Would the scales be for melody as well? Which scales would it show, and would changing the key change the chords? We can discuss this more in private or here: https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/33412/tonality-music-reference-by-bryce-hostetler-updated-with-midi-and-auv3-support#latest
@am1001 Tonality has manual strumming and runs as an AUv3. Let me know if I can answer any other questions.
Thanks for the response. I am responding to you in the app thread itself.
Found it, thank you!
