Drambo and MPE

Going in for a Dramjanuary. I couldn’t find much info about Drambo and MPE, but what I’ve worked out so far is:

  • a Drambo synth will respond to MPE input if setup to do so, but you can’t sequence it in Drambo (notes are recorded to the pattern, but no audio gets played back).

  • AUv3 synths hosted in Drambo will not respond to MPE input (you can play and sequence, but only as non-MPE).

Can anyone with greater experience confirm and/or embellish my discoveries? I was hoping I could get something midi only going in Drambo, but it looks to me like I’m still going to be reliant on recording MPE instruments as audio via AUM. I’ve been using a Seaboard Block and an Artiphon Instrument 1 for MPE input.

You can not record MPE data in sequencer but AU synths do respond to MPE input if you use e.g. MPE keyboard app (like KB-1). Tested on DRC, SM1

@clowm Thank you for responding. You encouraged me to persist and I’ve been having a fine time. I did update to the new Drambo version in the meantime, but I think my problem was the setup on the ROLI Blocks (last used with Logic on desktop). I used the very useful Block Dashboard app to tweak a few things (pitch bend being the obvious one which was wrongly set to zero).

At first I was getting crazy different MPE responses to the Blocks (over Bluetooth) in different MPE AUv3 apps, but then I disconnected my light block and loop block, with just the Seaboard everything is singing. Now delighted to have GeoSWAM and others in Drambo.

Top tip with KB-1, early success with that is what gave me hope to keep trying. Strangely though, I found it worked well for hosted AUv3 apps, but I couldn’t get it to produce sound from a Drambo MPE Instrument (which works fine with the Seaboard) - could well be user error...

One other issue appears to be with FRMS, which receives midi and produces audio whether it’s on an active track or not, that’s the only app I’ve had that issue with (no problem with DRC from same dev). Also SynthMaster Player crashes on preset selection, SM One works well.

Glad you got it figured out. Unfortunately I don’t own FRMS or Roli to help you further. When I need to record MPE instrument I always go with recording into flexi.

Yeah, no worries - got plenty to play with now and recording MPE into Flexi is where I’m heading next. Just thought I’d report the issues I’d found for those who come behind, I find MPE user experience info can often be very elusive, like it hasn’t quite been invented yet.

  • Having a rough time with Drambo standalone and Artiphon instrument 1:
—the Artiphon works fine, as expected using the Artiphon app on iPad Pro. Seems to work ok with AUV3 apps in AUM.
—but those same AUV3 apps can’t handle the Artiphon midi input in Drambo. Three things seems to going on: random preset changes in the apps (PC set to off in preferences) and sudden switch to super high notes and then sudden complete distortion of the sound.
—tried setting the Artiphon to single channel and multi-channel, and Drambo input with MPE on and off.

Anyone have any idea what may be going on? @steve99 maybe? Thanks.

I can have a go later today or tomorrow, been off Drambo for a little while and haven’t ever really used outside of AUM, but happy to go back in armed with Artiphon. Which AUv3s are you using?

Geoshred. Also, Factory crashes constantly in Drambo while fine in AUM. THANKS.

I don't know if it's related to your problem, but I posted on beepstreet forums a couple weeks ago that I can't get the MPE Tutorial project to work at all: https://forum.beepstreet.com/discussion/1237/cant-get-mpe-tutorial-project-to-work

If that project doesn't work for me at all in MPE Mode, seems unlikely that you'd be able to get anything going with an Artiphon's MPE. But who knows? It sounds like you're getting at least some response. I'm pretty clueless with Drambo, but I was getting no sound at all with that project with MPE enabled.

Tested with mixed results, confirming your issue of an apparent problem with Artiphon MPE to AUv3s hosted in Drambo.

Opened up a blank project in Drambo standalone, loaded a Flynth and then a Factory AUV3 onto tracks one and two, both responded fine to the Artiphon Instrument 1 with no issues (both non MPE).

Then I tried GeoShred with SWAM flute on track 3. GeoShred worked initially, seemingly responding ok to Artiphon MPE, but it crashed out after a while after jumping to preset 999. Also glitchy sound when I still had Factory loaded on track 2, but I guess that’s just CPU.

Drambo synth is though responding perfectly to Artiphon with MPE whilst, in contrast, SWAM Trumpet doing very strange things, not responding to the aftertouch I had mapped in the preset and quite a bit of random behaviour.

I’ve not gone back into the Artiphon’s setup, I have a feeling that the solution probably does not lie there.

My unscientific conclusion is I’m going back to AUM for Artiphon MPE input to AUv3s. This on iPad Pro 10.5 2017, iOS 13.5, up to date Drambo. If I stumble across any enlightenment I’ll let you know.
