They are Rotosound Nexus. 45 to 105. I’ve been a Rotosound endorsee for about 18 years now. I was with Elixir before that, but I had reservations about promoting a string that whilst impressive, was far too expensive for a working musician to buy if they didn’t have a deal. The Nexus is coated and lasts a very long time without losing tone, possibly not quite as long as an Elixir but they sound brighter and cost a lot less so they’re better value. You can only get them in black, which is a pain, because for me - that means they don’t work with a rosewood fretboard - it’s impossible to see where you are on a poorly lit stage. So, my main 2 gigging basses have maple fretboards and they have the Nexus on and then I use the Swing Bass 105s on the rosewood fretboard basses.

My video on the Black Ice is on YouTube now. Was there something you wanted to ask?

  • Thanks Jamie, ‘while the singers rabbiting on’ nice to hear from rhe gigging musicians’ perspective!
How would you use at a gig, through the PA, or a bass amp and use it as a preamp?

I would use it through a PA. there’s no point plugging pre-amping and eq into pre-amping and eq so if I plugged into a bass amp it would be via the fx return to use it purely as a power amp. If the amp is with me, I might as well use the amp. I’m a Hartke and Dixon cabinets endorsee and I love my rig but these days more and more gigs venues have concerns about volume and many bands travel as lightly as possible. So whilst it’s not my 1st choice way to work, my bass or guitar depending on the gig, into a simple interface into iPad, out to PA, monitoring with Xvive U4 in-ears - I can get all my gear and little backpack into a car or venue in 1 carry. It’s sad but, the days of big vans and massive rigs are disappearing.
