Midi learn app that displays raw midi data?

I have an old Yamaha DG Stomp with midi that I want to control with Stage Traxx and there doesn’t seem to be any midi CC and PC table for it in the manual... is there a reasonably cheap app out there that has midi learn and shows you the raw midi data?

  • I'm not clear on exactly what you're looking for. The free MIDI Wrench app will show the raw data for any MIDI on your iPad/iPhone. But it won't help you discover what MIDI messages the device responds to. I'd suggest a serious web search to see if anyone's posted that info.

Could you describe exactly what data stream you want to analyze?
Why does it needs MIDI learn? You could use StreamByter to filter data.

I want to learn what midi commands that I need to turn on/off the delay effect, or switch a preset on the device, etc. when I switch it manually it should transmit the relative midi command out of the midi port

That's what I thought. Well, MIDI Wrench will show you any messages coming from the device. But that may not help, since the device may not send the corresponding MIDI message when you switch it manually. In fact, it may be MIDI in only. If that's the case, you may need to try different messages to see what controls the device. MIDI Wrench has some configurable buuttons and knobs that could help with that tedious process.

Edit: As I read the manual (External Control Settings), you need to configure which parameter is adjusted for each MIDI CC, i.e. the configuration is entirely up to you. And the Utility Mode section describes how to associate MIDI Program Change message with specific stored patches. So, what you're trying to find out is actually stuff you need to configure on the device to work the way you want. Pretty neat, really, though a pain to work through.

The dg stomp manual is found here
    https://usa.yamaha.com/files/download/other_assets/7/313717/dgstomp_en.pdf

It includes the device's MIDI implementation chart.

There are a number of midi monitor apps that will let you see what midi messages pass through them. I find MIDI Scope and Streambyter useful for that.

I don't know what a MIDI learn app is.

  • Thanks for the help... I’ve never actually had a device where the midi control is set by the user... almost always there’s a table of default cc values. I’m not sure if it’s better or worse, but one way or another I’ll figure it out.

  • MIDISpy is a good app also.

Can you be more specific about what you are trying to accomplish.

What is it that you want StageTraxx do to that you can't figure out?
